Aaron Connolly set for Millwall departure

Millwall have confirmed the departure of Ireland forward Aaron Connolly who will leave The Den at the end of his contract next month. The Lions announced the club's retained and released list following the end of the Sky Bet Championship season, with Alex Neil's side having finished in eighth – just two points from the play-offs. Connolly only signed for Millwall in January, and scored one goal in his 14 appearances for the south London club. Millwall also confirmed talks over new contracts continue with several players, including former Ireland Under-21 international, Danny McNamara.

Ireland striker released by Millwall as Championship club releases retained list

Aaron Connolly is on the lookout for another club after it was confirmed on Monday that he would leave Millwall at the end of his current contract. The Ireland striker signed a short-term deal with the Lions in January and made 14 appearances in the Championship, with six of those coming as a starter. Connolly made the move to the London club after a brief spell with Sunderland, where he featured 11 times in all competitions. He scored once each for both clubs. Galway native Connolly, capped nine times for Ireland, only arrived at Sunderland late last September on a one-year deal. He had spent last summer in rehab, recovering from an addition to alcohol, having been released by Hull City. The 25-year-old bravely spoke about his experience in an effort to raise awareness of the problem, saying: 'I had everything a young boy could dream of but I couldn't get hold of my addiction.' He recalled his first Premier League start for Brighton and the two goals that day against Tottenham that pushed his name into the headlines. 'That's probably where my career started to go downhill when it really should have been carrying on upwards," Connolly said. 'I just stopped doing the things that got me to that position. I just stopped working hard and you can't do that. I started to believe the hype. I became a tough person to be around. Nobody could tell me anything.' Connolly's Millwall goal came against Queens Park Rangers on February 1, in just his fourth appearance and his second start for the club. Millwall, meanwhile, have also announced that contract negotiations are ongoing with former Ireland Under-21 defender Danny McNamara.
