Gulf County celebrates centennial birthday
GULF COUNTY, Fla. (WMBB) – Florida's State Constitution was signed in Port St. Joe in 1838. But Gulf County wasn't officially recognized until June 6, 1925.
That makes Friday, June 6, 2025, Gulf County's 100th anniversary. Gulf County tourism officials have been celebrating the milestone all week.
Friday, the main event was held at the Veterans Memorial Park in Port St. Joe, with live music beginning at 4 p.m. There were food and art vendors, and a fireworks show closed out the night.
'Gulf County is so good at coming together in tragedy, and when hardship happens and things like that. But coming together to celebrate something so special, I think is just, it's incredible. And I'm honored to be a part of it,' said Gulf County Tourism Director Silvia Williams.
'So I was actually born and raised here in Port St. Joe, part of Gulf County. This has always been home for me, both of my parents were born and raised here as well. At the end of the day, it's the people, you know, it really has just, in my opinion, you know, the greatest people in the world live here,' Gulf County Chamber of Commerce Board Chairman Aaron Little said.
The festivities continue Saturday, June 7, in Wewahitchka for their historical festival in celebration of their 150th birthday.
The event is from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Charles Whitehead Public Library and is free to the public.
