Holmes County kicks off summer basketball
HOLMES COUNTY, Fla. (WMBB) – The Holmes County basketball team kicked off the summer hosting a tournament with a half dozen teams, some local and some from out of state. The Play Day showcase gave local basketball teams the opportunity to get some early touches on the ball and a preview of what next season could hold. The event featured multiple teams from around the region, including Geneva Al., Graceville and Blountstown. Fans packed the gym for a day of competitive matchups. 'We had a good day, a great turnout, and strong competition all the way around,' said new Holmes County head coach Aaron Mollet. 'We had teams from Geneva and Graceville, and it gave everyone a chance to see where they're at.' Mollet, who recently joined the Blue Devils from Bethlehem High School, has already made a noticeable impact. With only three practices under their belt, Holmes County's players said they are beginning to see signs of change. 'Last year, we lost both games to Blountstown,' said rising senior Clyde H. Roche. 'Just looking at these first two games, I think we're done with that. I'm expecting a good season.' Rising senior James Thole said the team is still adjusting to Mollet's coaching style and playing together but he can see the improvement. 'Some of us used to play JV, and some didn't,' Thole said. 'It's a lot different play style than what we're used to. We're learning to box out, make the extra pass and not be selfish like we were last year.' However, another team that made an appearance was the Blountstown Tigers, a team of multi-sport athletes. 'Both teams had very contrasting styles,' said Tiger's head coach Matthew Nichols. 'We're more athletic, a lot of our kids play football, so that helps us compete in terms of strength and athleticism.' The Blountstown Tigers are coming off a strong regular season but were eliminated in the district championship. Now, with a motivated junior class and a renewed focus on fundamentals, they believe next year could be different. 'We've got to get back to basics, but not be scared to take those shots,' said rising junior Aaden Williams. 'If we do that, I think we can go farther next season.' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Bethlehem enters playoffs as top seed in region
BETHLEHEM, Fla. (WMBB) – The Bethlehem boys basketball team is entering the playoffs as the top seed in Rural Region 1 and looking to ride home-court advantage to the Final Four. The Wildcats (23-2) are riding a 10-game win streak heading into regionals and coming off a district championship victory over Graceville, their first district title under head coach, Aaron Mollet. Bethlehem is a young group, mostly sophomores and juniors, led by junior Kolton Amerson, averaging 21.6 points per game. Amerson has the second most points scored in the Rural Classification this season and Coach Mollet said he is also their top defender. 'He's done a really good job of taking that next step forward and becoming our captain and our leader and guy we can lean on in the offensive and defensive,' Mollet said. 'There's night in and night out where he's guarding the best player on the defensive end. A lot of people see the scoring, but we enjoy having him on the defensive as well because he uses this length so well. He does a heck of a job.' The Wildcats will host the same team they beat in the district final in the opening round of the playoffs. Coach Mollet said beating Graceville three times in one season is very difficult, especially with a state championship-caliber coach in command, Mike Gates. 'Coach Gates is a fiery competitor,' Mollet said. 'He gets his kids up to play. That was a big game for them to defeat Chipley in the district final. I know he had those guys ready because that was for their season essentially. Now everyone is 0-0, the records, throw them out the window. Anybody can beat anybody on any given night. So, he'll have these guys ready to go.' Bethlehem will host Graceville on Wednesday, February 12, tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
