Clemson softball makes another big move in the transfer portal landing Abby Dunning

Clemson softball makes another big move in the transfer portal landing Abby Dunning Clemson softball continues to make moves in the transfer portal, this time strengthening its pitching rotation with a key addition. Boston College graduate transfer Abby Dunning announced her commitment to the Tigers on Sunday, becoming the latest offseason portal pickup for head coach John Rittman's program. Dunning, a right-handed pitcher, is rated as a four-star transfer by Softball America and entered the 2025 season as one of the top arms in the country. She was ranked No. 30 on the College Sports Evaluators' Preseason Top-50 Pitchers list but saw limited action last season due to an early injury, making only five appearances. Before her senior-year setback, Dunning had a standout junior season in 2024. She went 14-14 over 33 appearances (28 starts) with a 2.46 ERA, six shutouts, and four saves. Her 172 strikeouts ranked third in the ACC, and she earned spots on the All-ACC Third Team and NFCA Mid-Atlantic All-Region Second Team. She also impressed in the ACC Tournament and even tossed a complete-game shutout at Clemson with seven strikeouts. Dunning's sophomore year in 2023 saw her log 158 innings with a 3.70 ERA, 13 wins, 15 complete games, and 147 strikeouts. Notably, she threw a no-hitter in her first start of the season against Illinois State and held opposing hitters to a .219 average. Her freshman campaign in 2022 included 22 appearances (seven starts), 59.2 innings pitched, a 3-6 record, and 61 strikeouts. She made an immediate impression, recording eight strikeouts in two separate games early in the year. Dunning joins FAU transfer infielder Kiley Channell—another four-star portal addition—as Clemson continues to strengthen its roster for the 2025 season.
