BN retains Ayer Kuning seat, Ustaz Yusri secures victory with 5,006-vote majority

The Tapah Umno secretary, also known as Ustaz Yusri, garnered 11,065 votes to defeat Abd Muhaimin Malek of Perikatan Nasional (PN) who scored 6,059 votes and Bawani KS of Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) who obtained only 1,106 votes. The result of the by-election was announced by returning officer Ahmad Redhauddin Ahmad Shokori at the vote tallying centre at Dewan Merdeka here tonight. Ahmad Redhauddin also announced that 289 ballots were rejected, with voter turnout recorded at 58.07 per cent. The outcome of the by-election reaffirms Ayer Kuning as a BN stronghold, a position the coalition has maintained since 1986. Meanwhile, the victory of Mohamad Yusri, 54, was also celebrated by leaders from both BN and Pakatan Harapan, who were present at the Dewan Merdeka. Among them were Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad, Umno secretary-general Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki, MCA deputy president Datuk Dr Mah Hang Soon, and DAP coordinator for the by-election Howard Lee Chuan How. The by-election was called following the death of incumbent Ishsam Shahruddin on Feb 22 due to a heart attack. In the 15th General Election in November 2022, Ishsam, who was also the Tapah Umno chief, won the Ayer Kuning seat with a majority of 2,213 votes in a five-cornered fight. The Ayer Kuning state constituency has 31,897 registered voters. Ayer Kuning by-election: BN wins with larger majority
TAPAH: Barisan Nasional (BN) defended the Ayer Kuning state seat after its candidate, Dr Mohamad Yusri Bakir, defeated Perikatan Nasional (PN) candidate Abd Muhaimin Malek and Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) candidate K.S. Bawani. Mohamad Yusri, 54, secured a large majority of 5,006 votes in the by-election today. He garnered 11,065 votes, leaving Abd Muhaimin with 6,059 votes and Bawani with 1,106 votes. The official results were announced by the returning officer, Ahmad Redhauddin Ahmad Shokori, at Dewan Merdeka Tapah tonight. He also said that 289 ballot papers were rejected, three ballot papers were not returned, and the voter turnout for the by-election stood at 58.07 per cent. A total of 19 polling centres with 63 polling streams were opened simultaneously at 8am today. Today's voting process involved 31,281 voters who fulfilled their responsibility to elect a new representative for the constituency. On April 22, 93.4 per cent of 500 police personnel and their spouses fulfilled their responsibility as early voters, and 116 postal votes were issued by the Election Commission. The by-election was held following the death of the assemblyman, the late Ishsam Shahruddin, 59, who suffered a heart attack while participating in a football tournament in Penang on Feb 22. In the 15th General Election (GE15), Ishsam, representing BN, won the seat with a majority of 2,213 votes, securing 9,088 votes in a five-cornered contest, ahead of the PH candidate (6,875 votes), PN (6,812 votes), Parti Pejuang Tanah Air (105 votes), and Parti Sosialis Malaysia (586 votes).

Ayer Kuning polls: All polling centres closed, results expected at 9pm
TAPAH: All 19 polling centres for the Ayer Kuning by-election are now closed. According to an official, 18 centres were closed at 6pm, while one polling centre in Toh Tandewa Sakti was closed earlier at 4pm. As of 4pm, the turnout rate for the polls was 54%. Some 31,315 people were eligible to vote on Saturday (April 26). The by-election is a three-cornered fight between Barisan Nasional's Dr Mohamad Yusri Bakir, Abd Muhaimin Malek of Perikatan Nasional and KS Bawani of Parti Sosialis Malaysia.
