Repairs, not politics, behind Dr Mahathir mural removal
ALOR SETAR: The Alor Setar City Council (MBAS) clarified today that the removal of a mural of former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad was approved as part of renovation work by the building owner.
Mayor Datuk Abdul Gafar Yahya said the mural, painted in 2015 at Medan Seni,"had deteriorated significantly, with visible paint peeling and weather damage."
The building owner received official permission to repaint the wall and carry out structural repairs.
Photos of the mural's disappearance, posted on the 'Alor Setar Kita' Facebook page yesterday, sparked public concern recently.
Abdul Gafar said MBAS and Kedah Tourism recognised the value of public art and had respect for national icons such as Dr Mahathir.
Plans are underway to either recreate the mural or restore it at a new location, he added.
He added that MBAS will soon introduce new mural guidelines for private buildings. These include requiring written consent from the owner, council approval of the design, and maintenance plans.
The mayor stressed the removal was not politically motivated and urged the public not to speculate.
"MBAS truly appreciate the feedback and concern shown by various parties and call for continued cooperation from the artistic community and building owners to support this initiative," he said.
