Tallest flagpole — a national pride
MUSCAT, MAY 23
The inauguration of the tallest flagpole at Al Khuwair Square marks a significant milestone in the country's history, symbolising national pride and unity.
The flagpole, standing at an impressive 126 metres high, is equivalent to a 40-storey building and has been constructed using 141 tonnes of steel, topped by the Omani flag measuring 25 metres in length and 44 metres in width.
This monumental structure is not just a marvel of engineering but also a powerful symbol of Oman's vision and growth. The discrepancy in the flag's dimensions highlights the evolving nature of the project details as it neared completion.
The flagpole is surrounded by more than 9,000 square metres of green spaces, along with dedicated walking and cycling paths extending over 435 square metres making the square an ideal destination for leisure, recreation and outdoor sports activities.
The project is a result of successful public-private partnership between Muscat Municipality and Jindal Shadeed Iron & Steel LLC that will cater to the communities. 'Indeed the flagpole is a tribute to Oman's vision and growth looking at its height. It blends national pride with community spirit which Oman is all about,' said Abdullah al Numani, a bank employee who visited the place just after the inauguration.
The unveiling of Oman's tallest flagpole is a defining moment for Muscat, setting a new benchmark in civic development while showcasing national pride. 'As the highest man-made feature in Oman, it redefines Muscat's skyline and stands as a symbol of the country's unity, progress and aspirations,' Khalfan al Obaidani, a Seeb resident who witnessed the flag raising ceremony on Thursday, said.
Visitors views on the project reflected the views of Sayyid Saud bin Hilal al Busaidy, Governor of Muscat, who was the chief guest at the opening ceremony stating that the project represents a qualitative addition to the governorate's public facilities, carrying both symbolic and cultural significance.
"We hope this square becomes a vibrant gathering place and an attractive landmark that enriches Muscat's urban landscape while enhancing the quality of life for residents and visitors. This aligns with the governorate's ongoing efforts to humanise the city and strengthen social ties across its neighbourhoods," Sayyid Saud said.
For Muscat Municipality, the inauguration of this distinguished urban project marks a significant addition to the capital, reflecting the ambitious vision of creating lively public spaces that meet community aspirations.
'The project is the result of constructive collaboration between the public and private sectors, through a strategic partnership between Muscat Governorate (represented by Muscat Municipality) and Jindal Steel Company, underscoring the importance of national partnerships in achieving sustainable urban development goals,' Ahmed bin Mohammed al Humaidi, Chairman of Muscat Municipality, stated.
