‘Invest in our young people'

TDT | Manama MPs are calling for a fulltime sports coach in every school to scout young talent, create a national list of promising athletes, and offer jobs to hundreds of unemployed physical education graduates. The proposal, tabled by Dr Mahdi Al Shuwaikh, First Deputy speaker Abdulnabi Salman, Mamdouh Al Saleh, Hassan Ebrahim and Dr Hesham Al Ashiri, urges the Ministry of Education to assign a specialist to each school, tasked with identifying, training and mentoring students with athletic ability. Al Shuwaikh, a member of Parliament's Services Committee, said the current crop of PE teachers is already stretched thin with a full teaching load and a range of administrative and technical duties. Unrealistic He argued that expecting them to carry out scouting and personalised coaching on top of this is unrealistic. Recent sporting achievements by young Bahrainis, he said, have helped put the country on the map in major competitions. With proper backing, he added, there is room for much more. Warning He warned that a large number of sports graduates remain out of work and that the proposal offers a practical use for their skills.

MPs to discuss government steps to tackle rising construction costs and quarry closure

TDT | Manama Construction costs are climbing, and MPs will press the government next Tuesday on how it plans to tackle the issue. A debate delayed from previous sessions in Parliament will cover rising prices, supply shortages, and the expected shutdown of Bahrain's only quarry in 2025. MP Hassan Ibrahim will open the discussion, which will look at what steps the government is taking to rein in costs and how quickly it intends to act. Backup plans MPs want details on backup plans for when the quarry shuts and how that will affect housing and development projects. They will also examine whether the number of transporters moving materials through Bahrain's ports is enough and what's being done to bring in more supplies from Gulf countries. Other points of concern include the effect of shortages on government projects already in motion, possible workarounds, and whether investment in the construction materials sector is being encouraged. MPs will also discuss longterm supply deals with Gulf countries to keep costs stable, as well as the future of alternative housing projects, including the Mazaya scheme, and other developments with fixed budgets. The request was put forward by MPs Hassan Ibrahim, Abdulnabi Salman, Hisham Al Ashiri, Mahmood Fardan, Jameela Alawi, Ali Al Nuaimi, Mahdi Al Shuwaiq, Mamdouh Al Saleh, Jalal Kadhem, and Mohsen Al Asbool.

Bahrain: MPs Back BD100 Housing Allowance From Day One

A proposal to hand Bahraini families BD100 a month in housing support — starting from the moment their application is accepted rather than five years later — has cleared Parliament. Council of Representatives Speaker Ahmed Al Musallam suggested a rethink, arguing that waiting five years was out of step with reality. 'Perhaps we find a middle ground — two years instead of five,' he said, hinting at a possible compromise with the Housing Minister. Not everyone bought the Housing Ministry's claim that long waits for state housing were a thing of the past. First Deputy Speaker Abdulnabi Salman wasn't having it. 'Some have waited 20 years,' he said. 'To suggest otherwise is just not right.' MP Mohammed Mousa, head of the parliamentary housing inquiry, laid it out clearly. Applications The ministry, he said, was talking about new housing schemes that process applications in a week or two. 'That's fine for those lucky enough to get in,' he said. 'But thousands are still stuck in the backlog.' He also revealed that the Housing Ministry is working on a new scheme following 'Mazaya' and 'Tas'heel'.
