Magnus Carlsen smiles as Nihal Narin rejects draw offer, then dominates Indian GM: ‘I just got completely crushed today'

It was supposed to be a showdown between a speed demon and probably the greatest-ever Grandmaster in chess history. But it turned out to be a complete whitewash as Magnus Carlsen thrashed Nihal Sarin in their Esports World Cup quarter-final showdown, winning 2.5-0.5 on Thursday. Magnus Carlsen thrashed Nihal Sarin to qualify for the semi-finals of Esports World Cup.(Twitter) The first game saw both GMs play out a draw and then in the second game, Carlsen bagged a win, even though earlier, he had offered a draw by repetition to his opponent, which was rejected. Carlsen simply smiled in response. Then in the third game, it was all Carlsen as he totally destroyed Sarin and clinched victory to qualify for the semi-finals. 'I just got completely crushed': Nihal Sarin Speaking after his defeat, Sarin said, 'Of course, I just got completely crushed today, but yeah, I mean, I for sure could have played better. I think for the first one and a half game, I was matching him or maybe playing even better.' 'I mean, he's Magnus for a reason,' he added. Before ending his post-match interview, the Indian GM said, 'I'm just very happy to play against Magnus; he's my biggest inspiration. It's my first time getting to play him in a match. I wish him good luck.' Sarin was considered an underdog in this tournament, and he will be disappointed by the manner of his defeat to Carlsen. He was representing S8UL in the tournament, and Carlsen was playing for Team Liquid. A child prodigy, Sarin crossed the Elo rating of 2600 in 2018 at the tender age of 14-years-old, which at the time made him the third youngest player in history to do so. He got his GM title at the 2018 Abu Dhabi Masters, which also made India's 53rd and the 12th youngest in history at the time. He recently won the Tashkent Open in March 2025, with an unbeaten score of 8/10.

PV downs Miyazaki, Unnati beats Gilmour

Double Olympic medallist P V Sindhu overcame world number six Tomoka Miyazaki of Japan to make a promising start to her campaign at the China Open Super 1000 badminton tournament here on Wednesday. Sindhu, a former world champion, prevailed 21-15, 8-21, 21-17 over the 2022 world junior champion Miyazaki in 62 minutes. 'It was a much-awaited win for me. The first round was very important for me to cross. It was three games (contest) and even in the third set, it was important for me to take the lead from the beginning because one side was very disadvantaged,' Sindhu said. 'So, it started off really good, but in the second game, it was hard for me to control. And in the third game, it was important that I take the lead and maintain that. 'It was important for me to win these matches so that it will also give me a moral boost and also that confidence. Because sometimes I've been coming close, yet I've been losing. I need to continue this tempo and keep going.' The 30-year-old from Hyderabad will now face fellow Indian Unnati Hooda, a winner of two super 100 titles at the 2022 Odisha Masters and 2023 Abu Dhabi Masters.

Unnati, Malvika, Aakarshi exit Thailand Open; India's campaign ends

India's dismal run in elite international badminton tournaments continued, as all remaining shuttlers, including world number 10 women's doubles pair of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand exited early, ending the country's campaign at the Thailand Open Super 500 here on Thursday. Treesa and Gayatri, returned to action following an injury layoff but fell 20-22, 14-21 to Japan's Rui Hirokami and Sayaka Hobara in the second round. With Lakshya Sen having bowed out in the men's singles opening round on Wednesday, Treesa and Gayatri were the last elite Indian players in the fray. The young Indian shuttlers also couldn't make an impact with Unnati Hooda, Malvika Bansod, and Aakarshi Kashyap bowing out after straight-game defeats against higher-ranked opponents in the women's singles second round on Thursday. Seventeen-year-old Unnati, champion at the 2022 Odisha Masters and 2023 Abu Dhabi Masters, was no match for world No. 2 and top seed Pornpawee Chochuwong, going down 14-21, 11-21 in just 39 minutes. World No. 23 Malvika, the 2024 Hylo Open runner-up, also struggled against former world champion and local favourite Ratchanok Intanon, losing 12-21, 16-21 in the USD 475,000 event. Aakarshi Kashyap was similarly outplayed by Thai southpaw Supanida Katethong, succumbing 9-21, 14-21 in a one-sided match that lasted just 34 minutes. In men's singles, Tharun Mannepalli — the only Indian to reach the second round — was no match for second-seeded Dane Anders Antonsen, losing 14-21, 16-21 in 42 minutes. India is yet to make a final appearance in any BWF World Tour event this year, with top singles players including Lakshya Sen, PV Sindhu, and HS Prannoy battling poor form, injuries, and illness.
