OBA hosts Fiba development workshop
Muscat: The 'Fiba Plus' workshop, organised by the Oman Basketball Association (OBA) in collaboration with the International Basketball Federation (Fiba), concluded on Tuesday at the Movenpick Hotel in Muscat. The workshop ran from May 11 to 13 and saw broad participation from representatives of government, sports and educational institutions.
The workshop aimed to develop a comprehensive strategic plan to advance basketball in the Sultanate of Oman. It focused on defining technical and administrative priorities and strengthening relevant institutional partnerships. The workshop programme included several sessions dedicated to analysing and assessing the current state of basketball, providing data and insights to lay the groundwork for a national development strategy. It also outlined key performance benchmarks and operational standards to be implemented within a defined timeline.

During the opening session, Abubakar al Jahwari, OBA Vice-Chairman and Director of the Fiba Plus Project, stated that the workshop is one of Fiba's key initiatives to support the development of national federations. He highlighted that the programme provides the OBA with high-level expertise, knowledge, and practical guidance at every stage of the strategic planning process. This, he noted, paves the way for creating a constructive road map for the future of Oman basketball, describing the workshop as a pivotal step in the sport's development journey. He further emphasised that having experts from Fiba present provides the association with an opportunity to draft a realistic and inclusive strategic vision tailored to Oman's unique sporting, educational, and cultural environment. He expressed hope that the workshop outcomes would help establish a more robust professional structure to elevate the game.

Hiba al Naabi, Programme Coordinator at the OBA, remarked in her speech that the Fiba Plus programme serves as a strategic platform to support national federations in building their administrative and technical capacities and in long-term planning. She affirmed the association's commitment to maximising the benefits of this programme by engaging all relevant stakeholders, including government and educational entities, thereby enhancing the likelihood of achieving sustainable basketball development goals in Oman.
The workshop is part of a broader series of activities under the Fiba Plus programme, which also includes surveys and one-on-one interviews with representatives from various sectors, ensuring the broadest possible engagement of stakeholders in shaping the future of basketball in Oman.
