"Terrorism should not be a way to address international disputes" says Shashi Tharoor
Panama City [Panama], May 29 (ANI): All-Party Delegation Leader Shashi Tharoor on Thursday said that terrorism should not be a resort to address international disputes. While addressing the Panamanian side led by Panamanian Foreign Minister Javier Martinez Acha, Tharoor, referring to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, said that India will go after the perpetrators of terrorism. 'Terrorism should not be a resort of attempting to addressing international disputes. If there are problems, there are other ways of dealing with them; sending terrorists across the border is simply unacceptable, and that should be made clear. We should go after the perpetrators, the killers ourselves, and we will do so,' he said. Tharoor said that the countries which provide a safe haven to terrorists should also be held accountable. 'But those who give them safe haven, those who protect them, finance them, train them, arm them, dispatch them and guide them, they should also be held accountable. And increasingly it seems to me it will become inescapable for us to face this particular aspect of the challenge,' he said. Tharoor also thanked Acha for Panama's support to India with regards to a seat in the United Nations Security Council. 'I want to start by thanking you for the very constructive statement that Panama issued on this subject and the very helpful role that you have played in the Security Council. And we certainly hope that your instructions to your ambassador will continue to be to show understanding for India's position. We know that Panama, indeed, the President of the National Assembly said this already, has consistently stood against terrorism,' he said. Tharoor explained the motive of the All-Party Delegation, saying that the idea behind it is to explain the Indian narrative on the Pahalgam terror attack and its aftermath. 'Our delegation, which covers five political parties and represents all parts of the country. And what we are trying to do is to go to a few countries in this region. The Prime Minister has sent smaller delegations to other regions as well. The idea is to explain to you our perspective on the recent events in our country and to seek your understanding for not just what we did, and what stand we have taken in the event of any future developments of a similar nature. And we certainly would like to seek your understanding,' he said. Earlier in the day, Acha backed India for a permanent seat in the United Nations Security Council. Acha, during his address to the All-Party Delegation Group 5, led by Congress leader Shashi Tharoor, noted the steady bilateral relations between both countries. 'It is not the first time that I say this, but probably it is the first time that you hear this. I have said publicly that India deserves to be in the Security Council of the United Nations,' he said. Earlier on Wednesday, the Tharoor-led delegation met with the President of the Republic of Panama, Jose Raul Mulino, at the Presidential house. The delegation led by Tharoor includes Shambhavi Chaudhary (Lok Janshakti Party), Sarfaraz Ahmed (Jharkhand Mukti Morcha), G M Harish Balayagi (Telugu Desam Party), Shashank Mani Tripathi, Tejaswi Surya, Bhubaneswar Kalita--all from BJP; Mallikarjun Devda (Shiv Sena), former Indian Ambassador to the US, Taranjit Singh Sandhu, and Shiv Sena MP Milind Deora. Panama Backs India for UN Security Council permanent seat
Panama City [Panama], May 29 (ANI): Panama's Foreign Minister Javier Martinez Acha on Thursday backed India for a permanent seat in the United Nations Security Council. During his address to the All-Party Delegation led by Congress leader Shashi Tharoor, the Panama minister on Wednesday (local time) noted the steady bilateral relations between both the countries. 'It is not the first time that I say this, but probably it is the first time that you hear this. I have said publicly that India deserves to be in the Security Council of the United Nations,' Acha said. Five permanent members of the 15-member UNSC include China, France, Russian Federation, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The 10 non-permanent members are elected for two-year terms by the UNGA. In a written reply in the Rajya Sabha in November last year External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar had stated that the government accords the highest priority to getting permanent membership in an expanded United Nations Security Council. He highlighted that India remains engaged, both at the bilateral and multilateral level and in the ongoing Inter-Governmental Negotiations on UNSC reforms. He added that India is working alongside other reform-oriented countries through its membership in the G-4 Group - India, Japan, Brazil and Germany and the cross-regional group of developing countries from Asia, Africa and Latin America ( L.69 Group) for expansion of the UNSC. The Minister underlined that the government has also been constantly engaging with countries of the Global South over the issue. A number of countries including most P5 countries have also endorsed India's candidature as a permanent member of a reformed Security Council. Meanwhile, Panama's foreign minister in his address to the visiting Shashi Tharoor-led parliamentary delegation noted that India-Panama relations are rooted in mutual respect and a shared vision of prosperity and peace. 'The relationship between Panama and India is rooted in mutual respect. Shared democratic values and a common vision for prosperity, peace and inclusive growth. Over the years, we have witnessed a steady strengthening of bilateral ties across multiple sectors, trade and investment, maritime collaboration, education, health and renewable energy,' he said. Acha warmly welcomed the delegation and noted the friendship between India and Panama. 'It is in great honour and sincere pleasure that I welcome your Excellency in Panama. The government of my country, our president, give you the most warming welcome. The Indian delegation here today is a powerful symbol of the enduring and dynamic friendship between Panama and India. And he marks a new chapter in our shared journey for cooperation, development and mutual understanding,' he said. Acha said that Panama has always adhered to its strategic role in global commerce, diplomacy and cultural dialogue. 'Panama, as the bridge of the world and the heart of the universe has always embraced its strategic role in global commerce, diplomacy and cultural dialogue. Likewise, India with its rich heritage, vibrant democracy, the biggest one in the world, and growing global influence has been a long-standing and a valued partner in our development and multilateral engagements,' he said. Panama condemns Pahalgam terror attack, extends strong support to India
Panama City [Panama], May 29 (ANI): Panamanian Foreign Minister Javier Martinez Acha on Wednesday (local time) condemned the Pahalgam terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir in which 26 people were brutally killed. Foreign Minister Acha affirmed Panama's commitment to fight against terrorism, saying that any country which serves as 'safe heaven' for terrorists should be condemned. '...Your visit here represents more than you can imagine: Panama's commitment to fighting against terrorism and to be together against these terror attacks that would affect anybody. We condemn what happened in Kashmir. Any country in the world that serves as a safe haven for terrorists should be condemned,' Acha said. A multi-party delegation led by Shashi Tharoor (local time) met with Panamanian Foreign Minister Javier Martinez Acha and showed them pictures of Pakistani Army officials attending the funeral of UN-designated terrorists who were killed in Operation Sindoor. Earlier, speaking to ANI after the meeting with the Indian delegation, Panamanian Foreign Minister Acha extended the country's support to India in its fight against terrorism and said, 'We cannot tolerate countries sponsoring terrorism.' 'Regarding terrorism, we stand with India. We cannot tolerate any kind of terrorism. We cannot tolerate countries sponsoring terrorism. We are a democratic country. India is the largest democracy in the world, which values principles, and we will fight against any kind of terrorism together,' Javier Martinez Acha said.
