Line dancers step out at festival
Diane Perkins teaches a group of Tussock Country festival-goers how to line dance at the Town & Country Club in Gore yesterday. PHOTO: ELLA SCOTT-FLEMING A band from the North Island squeezed in some line dancing in Southland last week before taking to the stage later that night for Gore's country music festival. Instructor Diane Perkins had a full house at her beginners' line dancing class last Wednesday morning, teaching festival-goers and visiting group The Harmonic Resonators some country moves. Ms Perkins' students, with varying levels of skill, danced the "cab driver" to the band's song Kaitaraiwa — Māori for driver. The morning class, held at the Gore Town & Country Club, and the Resonators' later show at the St James Theatre were both part of the Bayleys Tussock Country music festival, which finished on Sunday. Band member and ukulele player Ryan McIntyre said his group all had a country music background, mostly centred around the Morrinsville Country Music Club in the Waikato. Two of his fellow musicians had competed in the festival's Gold Guitar Awards and Mr McIntyre said frontman Jeremy Hantler competed again this year, winning the traditional section. McIntyre also sings in another band and line dances while performing country classic Achy Breaky Heart. He said he was always looking for new dances and often filmed his feet doing the steps, because they were so easy to forget. The group also danced to Ron Mitchell's I'll Be Country and Ms Perkins said Mitchell's songs were great to dance to. There were more than a few giggles as learners stepped or turned the wrong way, but Ms Perkins said there was endless room for mistakes and it was about having fun.

Miley Cyrus felt ‘prepared' for fame when she first tasted success
Popstar-actress Miley Cyrus tasted major success in her teenage years when she was cast in the title role in the sitcom 'Hannah Montana'. However, she said that she has always had an "understanding" of how the business of celebrity works. "I've known fame since the moment I was born, I've never known anything else so I was really well prepared in a way that really hard to train yourself to know what to expect on everything that fame can bring," the daughter of 'Achy Breaky Heart' hitmaker Billy Ray Cyrus and goddaughter of country legend Dolly Parton told The New York Times 'The Interview' podcast. She added: "But I already had the handbook because they did the same thing to my dad, and to Dolly and to everyone around me. Dolly is a great example of that, so I felt know what I think it is? I understand the business I'm in. I am in the music industry, I'm in the record business. "When I sign a contract, they're buying records that they wish to sell, so I understand that I am setting myself up to become merchandise. I am committing to them that I not only want to bring success to myself, but to them also. So I understand the music industry," said the "Flowers" hitmaker The singer, who has just released her ninth studio album 'Something Beautiful', only received her first Grammy Award in 2024 for her hit song 'Flowers' and had spent years wondering what she had to do to get that sort of recognition but, prior to her win, had decided that the "validation" she craved came from her millions of fans around the globe instead, reports She said: "There were other Disney artists who dominated in those categories. I don't know who else before that, but there was The Jonas Brothers. It was boys, so they didn't have a character to shed, but because I wore a wig and I was a pop star…" "I remember being broken-hearted because The Jonas Brothers got asked to perform with Stevie Wonder, and I never got an opportunity like that as a young girl. "My show had been on air for years before, and I'd had everyone on that show - Dolly Parton, Vicki Lawrence, who taught me so many amazing things, so was actually the greatest blessing that those awards never happened because I was recognised all the time by millions of people. "Their identities were being formed by me. There's a part of them that's a little part of me. I love that people became my reward. People loved me and that feel good. Of course, every year, never having my name called, and I was working so hard." "Not necessarily saying that I deserved it, but I felt like 'What am I not doing?' Where's the math? Because if we're doing the equation, I feel like it equals some sort of validation.

Miley Cyrus opens up about repairing relationship with dad Billy Ray
Miley Cyrus opens up about repairing relationship with dad Billy Ray Show Caption Hide Caption Miley Cyrus opens up about vocal condition behind her raspy voice Miley Cyrus has revealed that she has Reinke's edema, a condition affecting her vocal cords that gives her voice its raspy tone. unbranded - Entertainment Miley Cyrus is shedding some light on the complicated relationship she shares with dad Billy Ray Cyrus. In a wide-ranging interview with The New York Times, Cyrus, 32, discussed the price of fame, surpassing her father in success, and working to see her parents as people. "I just try to be more compassionate to my parents, because I hate that for them," she said of the increased scrutiny her level of fame has brought. "And I mostly hate it for my siblings, because they didn't choose that kind of highlight on themselves." Cyrus' younger sister, Noah, is also a singer. That scrutiny reached a fever pitch in recent years after the dissolution of her parents' marriage and a rumored rift between Miley and her father, who was briefly married to Australian singer Firerose and is now dating Elizabeth Hurley. "Timing is everything," Cyrus said of repairing her relationship with her dad. "As I've gotten older, I'm respecting my parents as individuals instead of as parents." Cyrus starred alongside her father in the Disney Channel series "Hannah Montana," which saw her play an international pop star, a premise which would later, with the help of the show, become her reality. "I took on some of my mom's hurt as my own because it hurt her more than it hurt me as an adult, and so I owned a lot of her pain," she said, describing the resentment she felt after her parents' split in 2022. "But now that my mom is so in love with my stepdad, who I completely adore, and now that my dad, I see him finding happiness, too − I can love them both as individuals instead of as a parental pairing." Tish Cyrus, Miley's mother, married actor Dominic Purcell in 2023. "I'm being an adult about it," she said. "At first it's hard, because the little kid in you reacts before the adult in you can go, 'Yes, that's your dad, but that's just another person that deserves to be in his bliss and to be happy.' My child self has caught up." Billy Ray Cyrus, whose "Achy Breaky Heart" skyrocketed to the top of the charts in the early 1990s, enjoyed a degree of success within country music, but nothing like that of his eldest daughter, who rose quickly from teen stardom. "That has added a level of complexity within my family, for sure. I think it would be hard for anybody with a dream to see somebody else achieving theirs in a way that you see for yourself," Cyrus said. "I do think love conquered all. He can still find the pride in me. But it would be delusional for any of us to think that that doesn't add a level of complication to our already complicated dynamic." Despite that complication, Cyrus says the line of credit she extends her father, who grew up in drastically different circumstances, will never run dry. "I have a lot of grace for him. He grew up in severe poverty, not always having indoor bathrooms. He had rarely, if at all, gone to the dentist by the time he met my mom," she said. "I spent some of my life in Nashville, but most of it was in LA, in a safe neighborhood, and I just can't even compare our upbringings in any way, shape or form. So I definitely have a really compassionate place in my heart."

Here's What Miley Cyrus Really Thinks About Dad Billy Ray Cyrus Dating Elizabeth Hurley
Miley Cyrus thinks that Billy Ray Cyrus' new romance with Elizabeth Hurley is something beautiful. In an interview with The New York Times published Saturday (May 31), the pop star was candid about her thoughts regarding her father's relationship with the English actress, which she compared to mom Tish Cyrus finding love again with actor Dominic Purcell. 'As I've gotten older, I'm respecting my parents as individuals instead of as parents,' Miley began. 'And so I think I took on some of my mom's hurt as my own, because it hurt her more than it hurt me as an adult, and so I owned a lot of her pain. But now that my mom is so in love with my stepdad, who I completely adore, and now that my dad, I see him finding happiness, too — I can love them both as individuals instead of as a parental pairing.' 'I'm being an adult about it,' she added. 'At first it's hard, because the little kid in you reacts before the adult in you can go, 'Yes, that's your dad, but that's just another person that deserves to be in his bliss and to be happy.' My child self has caught up.' The 'Flowers' singer's parents were married for nearly 30 years before divorcing in 2022, after which Tish — who has worked for years as Miley's manager — married Purcell in August 2023. Two months later, Billy Ray would marry singer-songwriter Firerose, though the 'Achy Breaky Heart' crooner would file for divorce after seven months of marriage in 2024. Billy Ray has since started dating Hurley, with the couple making their relationship Instagram official on Easter. 'She's so impressively brilliant,' he said of his Christmas in Paradise costar on Apple Music's The Ty Bentli Show in April. 'She reminds me a lot of Dolly Parton. She's a very smart businesswoman. If you can laugh together, you can make it through everything.' Throughout the changes in Tish and Billy Ray's love lives, rumors that Miley was estranged from her dad continuously circulated. In May, however, the Grammy winner put those to bed with a statement on Instagram Stories, writing, 'My dad and I have had our challenges over the years … I'm at peace knowing bridges have been built and time has done a lot of healing.' While speaking to NYT, Miley doubled down. 'No,' she replied when asked whether she was 'still estranged' from Billy Ray. 'I think timing is everything.' As for her mom, the Hannah Montana alum recently paid tribute to Tish on 'End of the World,' one of the singles from new album Something Beautiful, which dropped May 30. According to Miley, she wrote the track when her mom left her for a week to vacation in Italy, admitting, 'I'm too old to feel that way, but that's how I felt.' 'My mom called me and said: 'I don't know why, but I want to cry today,'' Miley added to NYT. ''I'm looking out my window, and there's nothing out there for me, because you're back home.'' Miley Cyrus has finally broken her silence on her dad, Billy Ray Cyrus' shock new relationship with actress Elizabeth Hurley. In a new interview with The New York Times , the Grammy winner spoke candidly about her turbulent relationship with her dad, as well as her mum Tish Cyrus' new marriage to actor Dominic Purcell. 'Now that my mum is so in love with my stepdad, who I completely adore, and now that my dad, I see him finding happiness, too — I can love them both as individuals instead of as a parental pairing,' the former Disney star said. Cyrus' rift with the Achy Breaky Heart singer deepened after the end of his 28-year marriage to her mum Tish in 2023. Now, she says that she is handling his flourishing romance with Hurley like an 'adult'. 'At first it's hard, because the little kid in you reacts before the adult in you can go, 'Yes, that's your dad, but that's just another person that deserves to be in his bliss and to be happy.' My child self has caught up,' she said. 'I'm being an adult about it.' Cyrus confirmed she has fully reconciled with her dad, but admitted her closeness with her mum played a major role in their falling out. 'My mum really loved my dad for her whole life, and I think being married to someone in the music industry and not being a part of it is obviously really hard,' she told the outlet. 'I think I took on some of my mum's hurt as my own because it hurt her more than it hurt me as an adult, and so I owned a lot of her pain 'There's been enough bridges now of time to get us all reconnected. I think timing is everything.' Cyrus, 62, and Hurley, 59 recently sparked marriage rumours after looking very smitten in a series of photos shared on social media. The pair's relationship surprised fans, coming just months after Cyrus' highly publicised and controversial split from singer Firerose. According to reports, it was during that difficult time that the country singer reconnected with Hurley, ultimately laying the foundation for their romance.
