1-On-1 with Travis Hunter: To understand the player, you must first understand the man
Action Sports Jax's Brent Martineau got the opportunity to sit down with the Jaguars' new star and find out just who Travis Hunter is both on and off the field. Hunter grew up in South Florida, where his father played football and starred on the track and field team at Boynton Beach Community High School. Advertisement Just before high school, Hunter's mother moved the family to Suwanee, Georgia, a small town just outside of Atlanta in hopes of a better life. Hunter and his family slept on the floor of a friend's house before moving into a one room hotel. >>> STREAM ACTION SPORTS JAX 24/7 LIVE << >> STREAM ACTION NEWS JAX LIVE <<< JACKSONVILLE, FL - APRIL 25: (Photo by David Rosenblum/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images) Photo: Jacksonville Jaguars Travis Hunter practices on day 2 of Rookie Minicamp JACKSONVILLE, FL - APRIL 25: (Photo by David Rosenblum/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images) GREEN BAY, WISCONSIN - APRIL 24: Wide Receiver/Cornerback Travis Hunter of Colorado poses with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell after being selected second overall pick by the Jacksonville Jaguar during the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft at Lambeau Field on April 24, 2025 in Green Bay, Wisconsin. Can Caleb Ransaw make the transition to Safety?
The Jacksonville Jaguars have invested a ton of assets into their secondary. From Tyson Campbell's extension, selection of Travis Hunter, signing of Jourdan Lewis and Eric Murray, the Jaguars have made it known through their actions that the secondary needed some work, a lot of work. Advertisement The Jags' secondary ranked last in nearly every statistical category so the viewpoint is certainly warranted. >>> STREAM ACTION SPORTS JAX 24/7 LIVE <<< Rookie nickel Jarrian Jones was about the unit's only saving grace as Tyson Campbell and company struggled in the man-heavy scheme under Ryan Nielsen. In the draft, James Gladstone traded up to select the unicorn himself, Travis Hunter, who figures to play both ways in Jacksonville. However, it was their third round selection of Caleb Ransaw that puzzled many initially but the vision was there. Ransaw, largely a nickel cornerback at Tulane, plays with physicality and toughness. He led all FBS cornerbacks in 2023 with a missed tackle rate of just 1.8%. His career missed tackle rate of 5.4% is top tier for any cornerback. Advertisement It's for these reasons and his skills in zone coverage that have the Jaguars intrigued with Ransaw at the safety position. The Jaguars cornerback room is pretty full with Campbell, Jones, Lewis, Hunter, and Montaric Brown, however, there is a path for Ransaw to become one of the Jaguars' starting safeties in the future. [DOWNLOAD: Free Action News Jax app for alerts as news breaks] On top of his physicality and tackling prowess, Ransaw is an incredible athlete, posting a 9.75 RAS. His 4.33 40-yard dash is among the fastest ever if graded out as a safety. In fact, he would be the second fastest safety ever. Ransaw is pretty dang good in coverage too. Advertisement Last season, Ransaw allowed just a 43.5% completion rate, his best season in coverage. Much of his time in college came at nickel, 766 snaps to be exact. It's generally a much easier transition to safety than say outside cornerback. While he's been solid overall in coverage, I mentioned his skills in zone. Last season, Ransaw allowed just three receptions on nine targets for 45 yards. It wasn't as though he didn't see a lot of play in zone, Ransaw was just rarely targeted. The Jaguars have flexibility needed to develop and mold Ransaw into the player that they envision. He doesn't need to start or even play right away as there are other players who can fill in the short term. Advertisement The hope is, with Ransaw's physicality, athleticism, and coverage skills, that he can develop into a starting safety for the Jaguars down the line and eventually replace or complement Eric Murray. Jaguars fans will have to be patient with Ransaw but the reward might just be worth all the risk. Devin Lloyd entering make or break season with Jaguars in 2025
Recently, the Jaguars elected to utilize the fifth year option of former first overall pick, Travon Walker, however, they have yet to decide on linebacker Devin Lloyd. If they elect not to pick up the option, he will be set to hit Free Agency following this upcoming season. The deadline to pick up the fifth year option is May 1, just after the conclusion of the NFL Draft. Advertisement >>> STREAM ACTION SPORTS JAX 24/7 LIVE <<< If they do use it, Lloyd would be set to make nearly $15 million, a heavy price tag for a linebacker on a prove-it deal. Jaguars' head coach Liam Coen spoke about Devin Lloyd and his fifth year option recently. 'No plans right now in terms of, we're having those conversations, getting used to the player,' Coen said. 'We just got to get used to him a little bit and get to know him a little bit. We're excited about him. A guy that we see we can do some things with, like, we do feel excited about some of his versatility and experience. So, some of those conversations will be open and honest and communicated.' First round selections carry heavy expectations and Lloyd is no exception. Lloyd has had an up and down career thus far, struggling with injuries and assignments at times in coverage, however, he's been excellent in run-defense and tackling. Advertisement Last season, Pro Football Focus graded Devin Lloyd as the tenth best linebacker in run-defense. In 2023, Lloyd was even better, finishing fourth despite facing injuries. [DOWNLOAD: Free Action News Jax app for alerts as news breaks] This past season, Lloyd's 4.5% missed tackle rate led all linebackers. He's as sure a tackler as you get. While Lloyd has largely been in the shadow of teammate Foye Oluokun, Oluokun's injuries allowed Lloyd to step up in 2024. In response, Lloyd led the Jaguars in both tackles (113) and defensive stops (59). His 59 defensive stops ranked 28th in the NFL among linebackers. Despite posting three straight 100+ tackle seasons, Lloyd's fate in Jacksonville is still very much in the air. Advertisement Recently, there has been a lot of noise surrounding the Jaguars and Georgia Bulldog linebacker Jalon Walker, who could come in and compete with Lloyd next to Foye Oluokun. This coming season will be huge for Devin Lloyd, who needs to prove himself in what could be his final season with the team.
