Denny Hamlin is back to being the villain, provoking Michigan crowd after win
BROOKLYN, Mich. — Denny Hamlin the antagonist is back. He brought his famous line out of retirement to goad the crowd after winning Sunday's Cup race at Michigan International Speedway and delivered an Ohio State cheer to incite fans of the University of Michigan in the stands. 'I do thrive on it,' Hamlin said of being viewed as the villain, 'just simply because you feel like you've got 60,000 people that are rooting against you. When you have that, it just feels really, really good and gratifying to prove them wrong.' A week before Father's Day, Hamlin eschewed his dad's wishes and told the crowd after winning for the third time this season and the 57th time in his Cup career: 'Daddy, I'm sorry, but I beat your favorite driver folks.' Many in the crowd booed. Nate Ryan, It was a repeat of the line he first uttered after winning the Bristol night race in September 2023. He said the line again after winning the Clash at the Coliseum in February 2024 and then stopped doing it. Hamlin said on his podcast 'Actions Detrimental' afterward that his father sent him a text to stop saying the line. His father said he didn't like it and thought it was too cocky. Hamlin said on his podcast that 'I'm going to listen to dad on this one.' Oops. 'I thought about saying it a few other times,' Hamlin said Sunday night. ' … In this one, son knows best.' Just to add another layer of antagonism, Hamlin did part of the O-H-I-O cheer for Michigan rival Ohio State in front of the crowd, earning further furor from some. Hamlin attended the college football national championship game in January that Ohio State won over Notre Dame. While he had no previous allegiance, his friends were Ohio State fans and he supported the Buckeyes. Buckeyes fans, look here. 😂 Wolverines fans, look away. 🫣 Hamlin thrives on chaos. His fiancee is due to deliver the couple's third child any day, an appellant panel ruled against his team and Front Row Motorsports this past week and both face the prospect of losing their charters and being open teams as soon as the end of the month. So, of course Hamlin won Sunday. And of course he stirred it up with the crowd unlike in his wins earlier this year at Darlington and Martinsville. Dustin Long, While he often is greeted with some of the largest chorus of boos during driver introductions, his actions Sunday are likely to amp that up. He's fine with that. 'Until the crowd shifts to mostly cheers over boos, I'm always going to antagonize the booers,' Hamlin said. 'Like, until you really get the switch, which I don't think I'm ever going to in my career, what else is there? '... I got to find ways to have fun doing this. It's such a grind and it's so hard to win. I found myself winning races a few years ago and I just moved on to Monday and it was on to the next track. I never really got to spend it celebrating. I took it for granted I'm just going to win next week, I'm going to win the week after that. I just thought another one was going to always come. 'You have another birthday (turning 45 last November). You keep wondering like how long are you going to be able to keep doing this at this level? Listen, 57 (Cup wins) might be it. None of us in this room know. I'm at least going to enjoy it as if it's my last, then I'll go to work on Monday, just like I always have. 'I don't want to be so ho-hum with winning that it's boring because then I lose my drive.' Or the boos.

Denny Hamlin Warns Stenhouse Jr. 'Will Wreck' Hocevar For Nashville Crash
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Denny Hamlin has warned that Ricky Stenhouse Jr. "will wreck" Carson Hocevar after the latter crashed into the rear of the Hyak Motorsports driver during the Cup Series race at Nashville Superspeedway. Stenhouse Jr. then lost control of his car and crashed into the wall, leading him to finish the race last. Hocevar, meanwhile, secured second place. Newsweek Sports reported Stenhouse Jr.'s post-race comments, hinting at imminent retaliation against Hocevar. He said: "A lap or two before, he [Hocevar] tried to dive in there from about 10 car lengths back and then that time, I just opened my entry a little bit and he over-charged the corner and drilled us in the rear bumper. Denny Hamlin, driver of the #11 Progressive Toyota, looks on during the NASCAR Cup Series All-Star Race qualifying heat #2 at North Wilkesboro Speedway on May 17, 2025 in North Wilkesboro, North Carolina."I'd say it's not out of the norm from him, but I definitely wasn't expecting that at that point of the race. It's just a bummer for us." He added: "Bummed our day ended like that. Definitely will have something to do about it at one point." Now, Hamlin has backed Prime Video's on-air analysts, Carl Edwards, Dale Earnhardt Jr., and Steve Letarte, who stressed that Stenhouse Jr. will strike back. Speaking on the Actions Detrimental podcast, Hamlin said: "The Amazon guys described this perfectly. Like, when I listened to the post-race, I thought they did a phenomenal job of saying and Carl said, 'Eventually, they'll be a price.' You're gonna be running really well and you can take this to the book: Ricky Stenhouse will absolutely wreck Carson Hocevar sometime in the near future. That's just a fact. I'd put this week's salary on it. I'm not kidding you. He ain't gonna punch him in the face, but he will absolutely wreck him because Ricky's that kind of guy who is going to feed into people saying, 'Are you going to get him?'" Warning Carson, Hamlin continued: "If you're Carson, just know that it's coming. So, don't be surprised. ... There's nothing I'm more confident of right now other than Jordan [Fish] having a baby and Ricky wrecking Carson. I just feel that is inevitable. I don't think there's anything Carson can say." Hamlin also praised the Prime Video analysts for pointing out the opportunity Hocevar had to make amends. He said: "This is where I think Amazon did a great job. Their analysts said that Carson had a shot to be empathetic to Ricky Stenhouse, who he just wrecked, in an interview and he chose not to. He [Hocevar] said, 'He could have cut me a break.' Hold on, this guy is wrecked, on the trailer and you're telling him he should have cut you a break? It's gonna come back to him. "Carson hasn't done anything egregious to me, yet, but I guarantee you that if he does, I'm going to get him because he has gotten a lot of people, and they haven't done anything about it."

Denny Hamlin Delivers Verdict On Major NASCAR Finale Change
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Joe Gibbs Racing driver Denny Hamlin has shared his verdict on NASCAR's decision to move to championship finale race from Phoenix to Homestead-Miami. NASCAR announced earlier this month that the title-race triple-header will rotate between a "handful of tracks." Ben Kennedy, NASCAR Executive Vice President and Chief Venue & Racing Innovation Officer stated at the time: "If you've watched a lot of other sports properties that are moving the location around year after year, part of that is to build up pent-up demand. Denny Hamlin, driver of the #11 Progressive Toyota, looks on during practice for the NASCAR Cup Series AdventHealth 400 at Kansas Speedway on May 10, 2025 in Kansas City, Kansas. "Having the playoffs be more unpredictable every year, the championship venue to be at a different location, I think gives you the ability to see different teams and drivers kind of rise to the occasion to be able to be crowned a champion." Speaking on the Actions Detrimental podcast (below), Hamlin shared his excitement for the return to Homestead-Miami, while also acknowledging that Phoenix had also deserved the coveted spot on the calendar. The 23XI Racing co-owner explained: "I'm glad to see it back at Homestead. Phoenix is a great venue the way they upgraded the facilities. The fan interaction, the fan zone in there is fantastic. They spent money on the facility to upgrade and make it up to Championship standards. "The town always supports us, and it's always crowded, doesn't matter if it's spring or the fall Championship race. Phoenix fans show out for us, which is why they deserved to have the Championship race for so long." Homestead-Miami track president Guillermo Santa Cruz claimed it is an "honor" to host the first championship race as part of the new rotational model. He commented: "First, it's an honor to be chosen as the first one to be in that rotation. "I think that rotation is a really good model for us to move into. It's good for the fans, it's good for the drivers, and it's great for everybody, and it'll allow us to really set a lot of precedent and then work with NASCAR more broadly to see how the model is going to be executed. "You know, what is it that's going to move from one track to another? What are the things that can only be done in Miami, because Miami is a certain sort of market, and those things will remain here, but what are the things that the sort of traveling circus will take with it when it goes someplace else? "So to be able to impact that from the get-go and be in those conversations from the very beginning and be the ones engaging in that respect, it's wonderful because we're starting out with a blank sheet of paper. "The NASCAR team is wonderful, but there's nothing like having that ability to be the first one up and to have that blank sheet of paper in front of you and say, 'OK, what are we going to do?' Then you start. As a creative person, I love that. I love that ability to do that. That's my favorite thing in the world."

Kyle Busch explains expletive filled rant after Kansas NASCAR incident
Famously, Kyle Busch was mad at everyone on Sunday involved in the four-wide incident that knocked him out of contention for at least a top 10 in the NASCAR Cup Series race at Kansas Speedway. Busch was booted off the track, spinning into the grass, where he got beached where he keyed up his in-car radio communication with his team and ripped into Ross Chastain, Josh Berry and Noah Gragson. Advertisement First he said 'fuck,' and 'it's fucking fucked' because his Richard Childress Racing No. 8 was trapped in the grass. Then added about the younger drivers that forced it three-wide: 'They're all fucking clowns. Every single one of 'em.' Speaking to Denny Hamlin on the Actions Detrimental podcast, Busch explained that his mind hadn't changed much a day after the fact. 'What the hell were they doing?' Busch said. 'I mean, the 1 [Chastain] was running the top, but he was like four feet off the wall. Then the 21 [Berry] is all squiggly wiggly and hits the 4 [Gragson] and then the 4 bounces into me and spins me out. … I had PTSD of the Daytona crash. I was headed into the inside wall and I'm like, 'Oh my God, this again? Like, please rudder.' So, I downshifted into second gear and the car's going so slow, it's just putzing along and then it ramps over the grass because I was trying to get the motor to turn back over by itself and it just stalled on the grass.' Advertisement Despite his frustrations with the other drivers, Busch also blamed the car and a durable body that encourages contact. 'Anyways, we're all clowns,' Busch said. 'We all don't know how to freaking drive. It's the composite bodies, that's what it is. Everybody just runs into everybody and runs over everybody and hits everybody, hits the wall because we all just bank on the fact that the body's just gonna pop back out and we're going to be fine. These clowns would not have any idea how to drive a steel body car. You touch the wall, and it plows. Put 'em back in the Gen 4 cars.' Hamlin agreed that young drivers would get a huge wake-up call having to drive cars that would 'plow' with damage but they also agreed that NASCAR wants drivers running all over each other. Kyle Busch reveals his perfect NASCAR retirement timeline
Kyle Busch has 63 NASCR Cup Series wins, good for ninth on the all-time list, 13 behind Dale Earnhardt Sr. next up on the running order. Speaking to Denny Hamlin on the Actions Detrimental podcast, Busch says he really would have liked to have matched Earnhardt, especially driving for Richard Childress but conceded that's probably out of reach. Advertisement So instead, Busch wants to race long enough to at least get to the point to where he can share a Truck Series ride with his now 10-year-old son that next season. 'If I got four more years, let's just say, 44, if I got four more left… I'd like to run five more because that would put me in the bracket of age for then Brexton, and then what all happens…' Busch said. 'If I can get above 70 (wins), for me that would be perfect.' Busch just turned 40. His son will be able to run short tracks at 16-years-old and the two-time champion has said he hopes to be able to run with a team where they could chase an owner's championship together. 'With the world we live in with this NextGen car and racing and everyone wrecking on final restarts and all this BS, if you can have a three or four race-win season and make it to the Championship 8, that is a good season,' Busch said. 'The icing gets put on the cake when you make it to the Final 4 and then you (blow out) the candle if you're the champion.' Advertisement Related Headlines
