Ex-Category III star Amy Yip marks 59th b'day in HK, receives award from M'sia

Former Category III star Amy Yip was given the Actress of the 80s Era laurel by the Malaysia Dato Foundation earlier in January. Photo: China Press Former Category III actress Amy Yip recently marked her 59th birthday in style with a party at the luxurious Four Seasons Hotel in Hong Kong. The occasion drew a host of high-profile figures – including actors Bowie Wu and Raymond Wong, Emperor Capital Group chairperson Daisy Yeung, the mother of acclaimed actress Charmaine Sheh and more. Adding a fun touch to the night, Yip wowed guests with a lively performance of the 1980s classic It's A Small World , originally sung by Priscilla Chan. She also turned heads with two looks – one featuring a platinum blonde bob and black dress, reportedly inspired by American pop icon Lady Gaga's Poker Face era, and another with a neat updo and sparkling sequin dress, channeling the playful energy of Tinkerbell. In a speech, Yip said she threw the grand bash simply because she wanted to have fun and celebrate with all her friends. 'I believe that when you're kind to others, it will come back to you. Seeing so many guests dressed beautifully to attend my birthday party… I feel so touched,' she added. As for the highlight of the night, it came when Yip's Malaysian business partner Evian Chong took the stage to personally present her with the Most Influential Actress of the 80s Era award. The honour was bestowed by the Malaysia Dato Foundation, which celebrates the contributions of various individuals in their respective fields, earlier in January. 'I came from the film industry, but after meeting Evian, I got the opportunity to venture into the world of business and invest in hotels. I'll keep learning from her … This year has already been amazing, but I hope next year will be even better,' Yip said. For the record, Yip began investing in hotels after getting acquainted with Chong, managing director of Malaysian hospitality company Evians Holdings. The actress launched her first boutique hotel in Penang last year and has already invested in a second hotel in the state – a durian-themed establishment as she loves eating durian.
