ETBU Falls in Super Regionals Opening Game in 10 innings

Story by: Adam Ledyard, ETBU Athletics MARSHALL, Texas – In a top 10 Super Regional match-up, No. 1 East Texas Baptist University was edged by No. 9 Texas Lutheran University, 4-3, in 10 innings. TLU scored the go-ahead run in the top of the 10th and held ETBU to a single in the bottom of the inning, holding off the Tigers. ETBU now has to defeat TLU twice to win the Super Regional Championship. Tristen Maddox produced a double and an RBI as Izabella Morales recorded two hits and two RBI. ETBU had three hits in the game, Emma Bell and Mallory Pyle each adding one. Avery Holland pitched a complete game, allowing six hits and two earned runs while issuing three walks and striking out five batters. Texas Lutheran took an early lead in the top of the first inning, scoring a runner from third with a single to left center field. The Tigers were unable to respond in their half of the inning, trailing 1–0 after the first. In the fifth inning, Texas Lutheran extended its lead with two unearned runs, capitalizing on an error to make it 3–0. ETBU answered in their half of the inning with a three-run rally. Maddox doubled to drive in one run, followed by a two-RBI single from Morales, tying the game at 3–3 through five innings. The teams remained scoreless through the next four innings, with the Tigers holding a strong defensive front to keep Texas Lutheran from scoring further. In the bottom of the ninth, ETBU had a chance to win the game but was stopped on a throw to home for the second out of the inning. A ground out ended the threat as the game headed to the 10th inning. In the top of the tenth, Texas Lutheran brought in the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly, securing a 4–3 advantage. ETBU had a runner on with one out, but hit into a double play to end the game as TLU took the first game in the three-game series. The second game of the series will start at 1:00 p.m. with the if-needed game at 3:30 p.m. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
