Socceroos brave Perth wet weather for open training session at HBF Park ahead of WA World Cup qualifier
The countdown to the biggest game in Perth's soccer history is underway and the Socceroos are stepping up preparations — come rain, hail or shine. With just days to go until their crunch World Cup qualifier against Japan, the Socceroos have enjoyed their first training session in Perth ahead of Thursday's night Optus Stadium blockbuster. Both the national team and approximately a couple of hundred of fans braved the inclement weather for the open session at HBF Park on Monday evening. WA products Adam Taggart, Alessandro Circati and Cameron Burgess were among the Socceroos on the pitch as they enjoyed their first session on home soil after a grueling 10-day training camp in Abu Dhabi. But while Perth's downpour kept a big crowd away, the Australian team made sure to make it worth the time of those who did attend in spite of the heavy rain. Following the conclusion of their session, the Australian side ventured to the edge of the pitch to sign autographs for their adoring fans despite the rain re-commencing. 21 players were on track for the Socceroos, with Denmark-based Paul Izzo and Mo Toure and American-based Aiden O'Neill, Kye Rowles and Patrick Yazbek still yet to arrive in camp. A win for the Socceroos on Thursday night would put them on the brink of qualification for a sixth successive World Cup. If Saudi Arabia fail to beat Bahrain in the hours after Australia's match with Japan, it would ensure the Socceroos safe passage through to next year's marquee tournament, to be played across the USA, Canada and Mexico. Any positive result for Australia against an already-qualified Japanese side - who have left several stars at home and brought an inexperienced squad to Perth - would set them up well ahead of their final game of the campaign against Saudi Arabia in Jeddah next Tuesday.

Perth Glory captains Adam Taggart and Isobel Dalton claim men's and women's Most Glorious Player awards
Perth Glory captain Adam Taggart has further etched his name into club folklore as he became the fifth player in history to claim back-to-back Most Glorious Player awards. And there was similar joy for women's captain Isobel Dalton who claimed the women's Most Glorious Player gong at the club's end of season awards at the Heath Ledger State Theatre on Monday night. Despite Perth's poor A-League Men's season, Taggart continued to cement his status as a club great as he scored 10 goals in 25 games and earned a Socceroos recall under new boss Tony Popovic. Taggart follows in the footsteps of Bobby Despotovski, Sam Kerr, Diego Castro and Bruno Fornaroli to have won the club's highest individual honour two years running. He also won the men's members' player of the year and golden boot awards. Dalton meanwhile overcame a mid-season hamstring injury to play 19 games and win the club's top individual A-League Women's award in her second season at the club. Men's midfield duo Nicholas Pennington and Luke Amos both took home awards in their first seasons at the club, with Pennington named players' player of the year and Amos winning goal of the season for his stunning thunderbolt against Brisbane Roar at home. Meanwhile, QPR-bound teenage star Jaylan Pearman was rewarded for a superb debut season with the club's DT38 young player of the year award after scoring four goals in 12 games from midfield. There was double delight for another Perth local in 20 year-old Tijan McKenna, who took out the women's young player and players' player of the Year trophies Fellow West Australian midfielder Georgia Cassidy received the members' player of the year award and the women's golden boot went to New Zealand international forward Kelli Brown. The women's goal of the year was awarded Ella Abdul Massih for her superb, injury-time free-kick which sealed a dramatic, last-gasp victory over Brisbane Roar at the Sam Kerr Football Centre. Glory apologise to fans after season-ending win
Perth Glory's season from hell has at least ended on a high, with a classy Adam Taggart double catapulting them to an upset 2-0 win over Wellington Phoenix in New Zealand. Glory entered Sunday's A-League Men match already knowing they had collected the wooden spoon for a second consecutive season. Taggart ensured Glory fans had a little something to smile about by scoring his ninth and 10th goals of the season to lift Perth to their first win over Wellington since 2020. Glory finished the season with four wins, five draws and a whopping 17 losses to their name. Their for-and-against goals tally made for ugly reading: 22-56, and Taggart spoke some hard truths after the match. "We apologise for this season and wish we could have given more performances like tonight, because I thought tonight everyone was fantastic, from start to finish," Taggart told Sky Sport. "They're the sort of things we needed throughout the year. "We're looking forward to being better. No excuses, full accountability. Putting in a performance like tonight is our base, and kicking off from that. "It was clear this year we weren't great going forward. We leaked a lot of goals. "From top to bottom we haven't been good enough. "I think everyone's sick of hearing all the words. They want action, and so do I. "(It's about) more actions, less words, and keep trying to push and move forward." PURE CLASS from Adam Taggart to open the scoring for @PerthGloryFC 🔥The run. The move. The finish. A goal any striker would be proud of!Watch #WELvPER live now on Paramount+. — Isuzu UTE A-League (@aleaguemen) May 4, 2025 Taggart showed all of his class in scoring the game's opener in the 34th minute. The 31-year-old captain trapped a cross, shaped to shoot off his left, then cut back inside before curling in a right foot shot over the keeper. Taggart was left cursing his luck in the 56th minute when he lost sight of a bobbling ball that made its way through a host of bodies to find him at the back post. The ball hit Taggart and bounced just wide of the goal. But he scored his 10th of the season in the 92nd minute with a right-foot dink over the keeper. Wellington ended the season in 11th spot with six wins, six draws and 14 losses.
