Statement of the European Union Delegation and the diplomatic missions of the European Union (EU) Member States to Libya on the assassination attempt on Minister of State Adel Jumaa
The European Union Delegation and the diplomatic missions of EU Member States to Libya strongly condemn the assassination attempt on Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs, Mr. Adel Jumaa, on 12 February in Tripoli. We express our deep concern over this violent act and extend our best wishes for his swift and full recovery. We call on the relevant authorities to conduct a prompt, transparent, and thorough investigation into this incident and to ensure that those responsible are identified and brought to justice. We firmly reject all forms of politically motivated violence, which fuel insecurity, deepen divisions, and undermine ongoing efforts to restore political stability and national unity in Libya. We urge all Libyan stakeholders to prioritize dialogue, avoid escalation, and address political disagreements through peaceful and inclusive means. It is only through constructive engagement and respect for democratic principles that Libya can move forward toward stability, unity, and prosperity for its people. Libyan minister survives assassination attempt in Tripoli
Shafaq News/ Libyan Minister of State for the Prime Minister and Cabinet Affairs, Adel Jumaa, survived an assassination attempt on Wednesday morning while traveling in his car on a highway in Tripoli. The Government of National Unity condemned the attack, confirming in a statement that the minister's health is stable. Security forces have initiated an investigation to apprehend the perpetrators. Moreover, the government emphasized its resolve to address any threats to the country's security and stability. In response to the ongoing insecurity in the capital, the Government of National Unity had previously approved a security plan to restore order by deploying official police forces. Libyan human rights organizations have called for immediate action to end the security chaos affecting several Libyan cities. A report from the United Nations Security Council's expert panel recently revealed armed groups in Libya have gained unprecedented influence over state institutions. The report stated that five Libyan armed groups have systematically violated international humanitarian and human rights laws, including arbitrary detention, murder, torture, and the destruction of civilian property, particularly in Benghazi and Tripoli. Since the ousting of Muammar Gaddafi in 2011 following a popular uprising, Libya has faced ongoing political and security instability. The country is currently governed by two rival administrations: one in Tripoli, internationally recognized and led by Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh, and the other in the east, headed by Osama Hammad and supported by the parliament and General Khalifa Haftar.

Minister in Libya's national unity government injured in gun attack on car
Libya's Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs Adel Jumaa has been injured following a gun attack in the capital. The Libya Observer and Anadolu Agency reported on Wednesday that unknown gunmen opened fire on Jumaa's vehicle in Tripoli, leaving him wounded in the leg. The report said Jumaa was rushed to a hospital for emergency surgery following the attack. No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack. In a statement, the national unity government condemned the attack, saying Jumaa's condition was 'stable'. It added that security agencies have launched an investigation 'to track down the perpetrators and uncover the circumstances of the incident'. 'The government emphasised that it will not tolerate any attempts to undermine the security and stability of the state, reaffirming its commitment to taking all necessary measures to ensure the safety of officials and citizens,' the government statement said. Libya plunged into chaos following a NATO-backed uprising that toppled and killed Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011. The oil-rich nation has been ruled for most of the past decade by rival governments in eastern and western Libya, each backed by an array of fighter groups and foreign governments. In 2020, warring parties in Libya signed a ceasefire agreement, but a political standoff has led to the formation of two separate governments in the North African country. The United Nations-recognised national unity government is based in Tripoli, while the opposing body, the Government of National Stability, is based in the eastern city of Benghazi.
