Social media influencer killed in ‘moral policing' attack, say Punjab Police
Bathinda: Social media influencer Kanchan Kumari, known as Kamal Kaur 'Bhabhi', was murdered in what police described as an act of "moral policing" and arrested two suspects and are searching for the alleged mastermind. The body of the 25-year-old popular Instagram personality with 3.83 lakh followers was found in a car parked outside Adesh Medical University here late Wednesday night. Superintendent of police (SSP) Amneet Kondal said Amritpal Singh of Mehron village in Moga district conspired to kill her, angered by her alleged vulgar and obscene online content. Mehron, who had previously warned the influencer, approached her on June 7 and 8 at her Ludhiana home, ostensibly to promote a video related to cars. On June 9, Mehron dispatched associates Jaspreet Singh and Nimratjit Singh in a SUV to bring Kamal Kaur to Bathinda. She travelled in her own Hyundai Eon, trailed by the suspects. Near Bathinda, the group stopped at a car workshop. Police said Jaspreet and Nimratjit confronted Kamal Kaur, demanding she stop uploading "vulgar videos" and using "Kaur" with her name. Subsequently, the two men joined Kamal Kaur in her car. It was then that Jaspreet Singh allegedly strangled her with a piece of cloth, leaving her body on the rear seat, according to the SSP. The car was later parked in the Adesh University car park. Kamal Kaur was unmarried and lived with her two sisters, two brothers and mother after the death of her father one-and-a-half years ago. The SSP confirmed that Kamal Kaur was killed on the night of June 9-10. Jaspreet Singh and Nimratjit Singh were arrested late Thursday. Police are on the hunt for Amritpal Singh Mehron, who remains at large. A case of murder and destruction of evidence was registered against the three. Police said Amritpal Singh and Nimratjit Singh were previously involved in a 2021 "moral policing" case in Barnala district. BOX Man who ordered the hit contested polls, against 'obscene content' Amritpal Singh from Mehron village in Moga district faces a murder charge as a conspirator in the Kamal Kaur case. He also has two criminal cases at Dhanaula police station in Barnala district, one for threatening a producer accused of "obscene songs" in 2021 and another in Amritsar for allegedly vandalising folk dancer statues near the Golden Temple in 2020. Mehron unsuccessfully contested the 2022 assembly elections as an SAD (Amritsar) candidate from the Tarn Taran constituency. His 2022 election affidavit stated he completed a diploma in diesel mechanics from ITI, Moga, in 2014 after Class XII (non-medical) from DM College Moga, and worked as a diesel mechanic. Mehron leads a self-styled organisation, 'Qaum De Rakhe', and has recently targeted social media influencers posting "obscene content". He had previously threatened both Kamal Kaur and Deepika Luthra over their content, also warning Kamal against using "Kaur" with her name. On Friday, the police identified the arrested accused as Jaspreet Singh, 32, a resident of Mehro village in Moga, and Nimratjit Singh, 21, a resident of Patti in Tarn Taran district. Kamal Kaur Bhabhi killed for ‘vulgar' videos: Check how Amritpal Singh Mehron planned to ‘teach her a lesson'
Bathinda Police have arrested two men, Jaspreet Singh and Nimratjit Singh, for the murder of Kanchan Kumari, popularly known as Kamal Kaur Bhabhi. The social media influencer was found dead in a car near Adesh University at Bhucho Kalan in Bathinda. Kanchan Kumari was a popular social media influencer with lakhs of followers. Both the accused are said to be Nihangs. Nihangs are a warrior sect in Sikhism. They are recognised for their distinctive blue attire, traditional arms and elaborately-adorned turbans. The accused, however, were not wearing the traditional dress when they allegedly committed the crime. A third man, Amritpal Singh Mehron, a self-styled Sikh radical leader, is still on the run. "The key conspirator, Amritpal Singh, had previously cautioned her to stop posting 'vulgar' videos and had planned to teach her a lesson. He, along with others, hatched a conspiracy and they strangled her to death at an isolated location on Tuesday," said Bathinda SSP Amneet Kondal. According to police, Kanchan was strangled with a waistband inside her car. The motive behind the murder appears to be 'unauthorised moral policing'. The accused claimed that Kanchan's content on social media was immoral and hurt community sentiments. A few days before the murder, Mehron had contacted Kanchan for a paid promotional event and asked her to come to Bathinda. "He visited again the next day and convinced her to visit Bathinda. On June 9, he contacted her again and she agreed, and after 11 pm that night, her mother lost all contact with her,' the SSP added. She left her home in Ludhiana on June 9 with Jaspreet and Nimratjit. A few hours later, she was killed in her own car. Kanchan had received threats in the past for posting bold content. Last October, a terrorist named Arsh Dalla also warned her to stop sharing such videos. Police acted quickly after a radical Sikh group claimed responsibility for the murder on social media. Her body was found in a decomposed state. Investigations are ongoing to find the third accused and ensure justice. Amritpal Singh Mehron shared the police statement on his Instagram channel. His defiant reaction can be translated to, 'The winds may try to decide who shines, but only the lamp with strength within will truly burn.' Meanwhile, some of his followers are posting with the hashtag #westandwithamritpalsingh.
