Cambridge March exams see record turnout in India
Mumbai: A record number of India students appeared for
Cambridge University Press & Assessment
exams in March as it is aligned with the Indian academic year. Students in India also have the option to take exams in the June & Nov series.
The results of the March exam series were announced on Wednesday, covering over 420 schools and over 17,000 students. Close to 85,000 exam entries (overall subject papers by total students) were recorded, an 11% increase over last year.
Cambridge IGCSE
(equivalent to Class 10) entries rose by 12% to cross the 62,000-mark, while the
AS & A level
cohort (equivalent to Classes 11 and 12) rose 10% to over 20,000 entries. There are around 120 CIE schools in Mumbai and 180 across Maharashtra.
Four students of Rustomjee Cambridge International Schools were among world toppers scoring 100/100 in individual subjects: Dhruv Gambhire (mathematics) and Adit Telang (English as a second language) from Dahisar campus; Reva Vikas Hiran (mathematics) from Virar and Mukta Gautam (English as a second language) from Thane campus.
Debika Chatterji, director principal of JBCN International School, Borivli, said the school has two subject toppers securing 100/100 in extended mathematics, with "more anticipated as we await the remaining results from the May-June exam series."

"This batch was very versatile. Last year, we had three world toppers; this year, we don't have any. Although none of them scored 100, all of them did very well. There are two students who have 7A* and one 7," said Hema Doshi, head of Ajmera Global Schools. At Billabong High International School, Malad, Aagam Malde received the outstanding Cambridge Learner Award, scoring 100 in chemistry in grade 10.
Mathematics, physics and chemistry continue to hold court as popular choices among Indian students, "underscoring a sustained affinity toward STEM subjects", said a release from Cambridge.
"Cambridge IGCSE biology is experiencing a surge in popularity, with entries up 16% compared to last year. This suggests a broadening interest within the STEM field and a growing recognition of the importance of biological sciences among students in India.

Exam entries also show an increased focus on developing future-ready skills, with Cambridge IGCSE Global Perspectives experiencing a 24% rise in entries. "By engaging students with some of the most pressing issues facing the world today, Cambridge Global Perspectives develops critical thinking, research and collaborative problem-solving skills that are vital for success in a rapidly evolving global landscape," said the release.
Data shows that economics and business also hold strong positions in Cambridge International AS & A level, ranking fourth and fifth, respectively, reflecting a keen interest in understanding the "dynamics of the global economy".
