Local 1st grade class adopts cow from Cortland farm
CORTLAND, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – Students across our area got to check in with a classroom pet of sorts today, a local dairy cow they adopted.
First graders in Nicole Nemecek's class at Thomas Jefferson Elementary in Binghamton were in an online visit with Sofia, a cow at the Fouts Farm in Cortland. The class adopted Sofia last October, one month after the calf was born.
Through regular checkups, they've been able to keep tabs on her and watch her grow.
'At the beginning, it was small. Then each time we get to watch a new video, it's a surprise to see how it just got bigger.' First Grader Lennon Harder says, 'Sofia was only like this big when we first saw her. And now she's like this big, taller than me,' First Grader Carmelo Cassanova-Pignatiello said.
Carmelo even had the question she submitted asked during the call with several different schools. The Adopt A Cow program is promoted by the American Dairy Association North East.
7 teachers in 3 Binghamton elementaries participated this year.
