Norwegian doctor jailed for 21 years for raping patients for almost two decades

OSLO: A Norwegian court on Friday sentenced a doctor to 21 years in prison for committing dozens of rapes over a period of almost two decades. Arne Bye, 55, was found guilty of committing 70 counts of rape and sexual assault during gynecological examinations of his patients between 2004 and 2022. He was also condemned for 80 instances of abuse of his position. Bye committed the acts at his medical practice in the town of Frosta in central Norway. The court in the city of Trondelag barred the doctor from exercising his profession indefinitely and demanded he financially compensate his victims. Ninety-four women testified during the trial, describing how Bye committed multiple acts of non-consensual touching and digital penetration without medical justification. The acts all constitute rape under Norwegian law. Bye also filmed the assaults. "The suspect's actions make this case an extremely serious one. The actions are unacceptable," the Adresseavisen newspaper quoted judge Espen Haug as saying in court. The sentence matched the one requested by the prosecution. Bye's defense had argued for lesser sentence, recognising only 20 of the rapes.

Thousands in central and western Norway isolated or without power due to storm

A red danger warning for flooding was still in place for western Norway on Thursday after a storm battered parts of Vestland, Møre and Romsdal and Trøndelag. 'The rain has now subsided, but the danger warning is still in effect. We are monitoring the situation continuously and have crews out,' Monica Øksengård at the road traffic control centre for western Norway told Norwegian newswire NTB. An orange weather warning was issued for wind in Trøndelag on Thursday, and gusts of up to 144 kilometres per hour were expected. More than 20,000 energy customers in Trøndelag were left without power on Thursday morning. 'It is due to the weather, strong winds that are still ongoing and that are affecting the power supply in large parts of the old Nord-Trøndelag [region],' Ingvild Asp at the energy firm Tensio told the newspaper Adresseavisen. Asp warned that it could take time to restore power to some of the areas affected by outages.' Around 50 roads were closed on Thursday morning, and the Norwegian Roads Administration asked motorists to consider whether journeys were necessary. Road closures and landslides left several thousand people in Ullensvang, Sogndal, Luster and Molde isolated. Express boats and ferries in Trøndelag have all been docked due to the weather.
