Revolving Door Roundup: CBS News Names Tom Cibrowski President and Executive Editor

Eye on CBS News: A week after the departure of Adrienne Roark to Tegna, CBS News has brought in Tom Cibrowski to lead the news organization as its president and executive editor. Reporting to Wendy McMahon, Cibrowski will oversee CBS News' newsgathering, units, and shows. 'Journalism and storytelling are what CBS News does the best,' Cibrowski said in a statement. 'There is simply no one better. I'm beyond thrilled to be returning to this iconic and unmatched organization and can't wait to hit the ground running.' This is a homecoming for Cibrowski, who returns to the network after a stint at the ABC San Francisco affiliate, KGO. He was previously part of the CBS News family as a broadcast producer for the CBS Early Show with Bryant Gumbel and was also responsible for the morning show's coverage of the 9/11 attacks. Cibrowski also spent 25 years at ABC News in multiple leadership roles, including senior vice president of ABC News programs, newsgathering, and special events. Cibrowski was part of the team that saw Good Morning America assume the No. 1 position after Today's 16-year stranglehold. Moving Up: ABC News has promoted Seni Tienabeso to vice president of ABC News Live and specialized units after serving as the first-ever executive director of the streaming service. In this new role, Tienabaso will lead all aspects of ABC News Live, including resource and talent management, content development, and programming. CNN Moves: Harry Enten-CNN's numbers guy and host of the Margin of Error podcast-has been promoted to chief data analyst at the network. Enten was previously a senior writer and analyst for CNN Politics focusing on poll numbers and electoral trends. CNN also announced that Sam Felix has joined the network as a senior vice president of strategic partnership and business development. Reporting to David Leavy, Felix joins the network from The New York Times, and will be responsible for developing, cultivating, and building out CNN's commercial and strategic partnerships with key technology platforms and services, industry leaders, and trade organizations. Finally, former CNN deputy media editor, Jonathan Passantino, has landed at the Status newsletter where he will be the platform's executive editor. The Status newsletter is the brainchild of Oliver Darcy, CNN's former media reporter who also wrote the Reliable Sources newsletter. 'His experience and sharp editorial eye will help us push even further,' Darcy said on X, formerly Twitter. NBC News New Hire: NBC News has announced that Gordon Lubold will be joining the news outlet as a national security reporter beginning March 10. Lubold comes to NBC from The Wall Street Journal where he was their White House national security and Pentagon reporter.

CBS News Names Tom Cibrowski President and Executive Editor

CBS News has named Tom Cibrowski president and executive editor, tapping an ABC News veteran to lead the news division at a critical moment. Wendy McMahon, president and CEO of CBS News and Television Stations and CBS Media Ventures, announced Cibrowski's hiring Thursday morning. Cibrowski succeeds Adrienne Roark, the former CBS News president of newsgathering, who left for a job at Tegna earlier this month. Local News Ratings Go High With Wildfires Coverage Susan Zirinsky Returns to Exec Role at CBS News as Network Tackles "Perceived Bias" Cibrowski, however, will have a wider purview. Roark led newsgathering and editorial, but McMahon herself oversaw some key shows. Cibrowski will run all CBS News shows, as well as newsgathering and reporting units. 'Tom brings three decades of experience in broadcast journalism to CBS News, some of it here at CBS, where he served as a broadcast producer at The Early Show,' McMahon wrote in a memo to staff. 'Everything he does is marked by a deep understanding of the news landscape, and he is committed to telling stories with impact, integrity, and fairness.' Cibrowski had been with ABC News for 25 years in a number of roles, including as executive producer of Good Morning America, leading that show when it overtook NBC's Today in the ratings. 'Journalism and storytelling are what CBS News does the best,' Cibrowski said in a statement. 'There is simply no one better. I'm beyond thrilled to be returning to this iconic and unmatched organization and can't wait to hit the ground running.' He joins CBS at a tumultuous moment for the brand. CBS owner Paramount is in the midst of selling to Skydance, with the FCC investigating a 60 Minutes interview with former VP Kamala Harris over allegations of 'news distortion' because of how it was edited. President Trump had sued Paramount over the matter, and the company has held settlement discussion, to the chagrin of CBS News employees who find the allegations not credible. And CBS just switched up its flagship CBS Evening News, with Norah O'Donnell leaving the anchor chair to make way for Maurice DuBois and John Dickerson. The change has not helped in the ratings, which are down from last year. CBS News Mulls Veteran Tom Cibrowski for Senior Role (EXCLUSIVE)

The next potential leader of CBS News has built up a lot of experience running newsrooms for ABC. Tom Cibrowski, a former senior ABC News executive who played a big role in moving 'Good Morning America' past NBC's 'Today' in the ratings last decade, has emerged as a possible candidate to take a senior role at CBS News, according to two people familiar with the matter, just as the Paramount Global unit faces one of its most challenging periods. Cibrowski would report to Wendy McMahon, who oversees news, local stations and syndicated programing for CBS. More from Variety CBS News Chief Adrienne Roark is Latest Top News Executive to Exit CBS News Names Robert Costa Chief Washington Analyst Donald Trump Calls for '60 Minutes' to Be 'Terminated' Amid Lawsuit Over Kamala Harris Interview, Claims 'CBS Should Lose Its License' CBS News declined to make executives available for comment. Cibrowski could not be reached for immediate comment. There is no sign that CBS News and the executive have signed any agreement and there remains the possibility that a deal might not come to fruition. The executive would presumably fill the role previously inhabited by Adrienne Roark, a veteran local-news executive who had been assigned to oversee CBS national newsgathering as well as the operations of WCBS and WLNY in New York and WBZ and WSBK in Boston. Roark is exiting CBS to join Tegna as its chief content officer, reporting directly to CEO Mike Steib. Cibrowski has run KGO, a San Francisco station owned by ABC, since 2018. CBS News is under an array of pressures. The news division is at the center of of a case levied against Paramount Global by now-President Donald Trump, who claims editing of a '60 Minutes' interview of former Vice President Kamala Harris had an influence on the 2024 election. Executives at Paramount Global have mulled settling the case, because they fear the White House could slow down its deal to be acquired by David Ellison's Skydance Media. The FCC recently asked for transcripts and video tied to the Harris interview. Meanwhile, Paramount, which has already made massive cost cuts, is expected to make more once the Skydance deal is consummated. When McMahon announced Roark's departure, she declined to name a successor, noting the company would 'sit with this news' for some time. Cibrowski would presumably have some say in the management of CBS News mainstays such as '60 Minutes,' 'Sunday Morning' and 'CBS Evening News.' CBS late late month unveiled a new format for the venerable 'CBS Evening News' that relies on the anchor duo of Maurice DuBois and John Dickerson and hinges on enterprise reporting and features rather than summing up daily headlines in short segments, rather than a single anchor — as has been the format tradition for decades. Ratings have declined since DuBois and Dickerson replaced Norah O'Donnell on the program, but last week, there was a ray of hope: a surge in overall viewership.
