PGI's Rs 495-cr neuroscience centre: Machines missing, hopes on hold

Chandigarh: The much-anticipated Advanced Neuroscience Centre at the PGI, which was expected to be fully functional by April this year, remains inoperative despite the building's completion some two-and-a-half months ago.
The state-of-the-art facility is currently awaiting the crucial procurement of CT Scan, MRI, and DSA machines. This process reportedly has been on hold for an unspecified period.
Sources close to the development indicate that the procurement of these vital machines is still several months away. Furthermore, it is estimated that once the equipment is acquired, an additional five to six months will be required for their commissioning and installation before the centre can officially open its doors to patients.
The persistent delay is causing significant concern, leading to a substantial wastage of potential resources. "The advanced medical services that could have been rendered to a large number of additional patients are currently unavailable, and the specialised manpower recruited for the centre is being underutilised, compounding the operational inefficiencies at the institute," said a faculty member.
He said, "Some diagnostic tests could have been done at the operational centre if the machines were procured, generating more than a crore as revenue for the institute."

Sources indicate that a few anomalies were pointed out by a former higher official in the administration, which stalled the procurement. "Eventually, instead of taking things forward, the administration has preferred to dilly dally. Also, additional manpower dedicated to the centre has been approved. But without these basic machines, things are at a standstill," said an official in the institute.
The Advanced Neuroscience Centre, costing Rs 495 crore, will offer a comprehensive range of services under one roof. It was approved in 2018 by the union ministry of health and family welfare. The centre will have 300 general ward beds, an OT complex with ten modular operation theatres, and specialised facilities including a brain suite for advanced neurosurgeries. The centre will focus on various subspecialties, such as cerebrovascular surgery, skull base surgery, and spinal neurosurgery, and will cater to patients with neurological diseases, including stroke, immunological disorders, and neurodegenerative conditions.
