Bloomberg on Thursday unveiled its inaugural Africa Startups to Watch list, featuring 25 companies that represent some of the smartest ideas with their founders from across the continent.
The list features companies from Angola, Egypt, Ethiopia, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Kenya, Morocco, Nigeria, Rwanda, South Africa, and Zambia. These startups are driving innovation across sectors such as radiology, e-commerce, solar energy, climate solutions, foreign exchange, online fraud prevention, healthcare, genomics, artificial intelligence, mental health, food supply and agriculture, travel, cosmetics, and digital learning amongst others.
Bloomberg News editors, along with Bloomberg Intelligence analysts considered a number of criteria when assessing the entries including: the scope of the problem companies were tackling, the creativity of their ideas and their traction with investors and customers alike. All selected companies are privately held.
To mark the launch, Bloomberg hosted a special Africa Startups to Watch breakout session at the fifth edition of 'Qatar Economic Forum, Powered by Bloomberg' in collaboration with Media City Qatar, in Doha.
The breakout panel, held on Thursday May 22, featured founders and CEOs from some of the companies for a discussion about key issues impacting the African startup ecosystem, including investment, infrastructure, and global tradedynamics.
