Ricky Gervais risks being cancelled with dicey Hollywood Walk of Fame speech

In true Ricky Gervais fashion, his speech upon receiving a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame was pretty dicey. The After Life creator received the honour on Friday, following in the footsteps of thousands of showbiz greats, from Destiny's Child and Bob Marley to Sir Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder. Or, if you're Ricky, perhaps you'd rather focus on some more controversial recipients… During his speech at the ceremony, the 63-year-old, famous for joking about taboo topics, decided to risk public cancellation once more. He joked about how grateful he is to have his star sitting alongside some other legends of the business, naming Michael Jackson, Bill Cosby, and Roscoe 'Fatty' Arbuckle, all of whom have been accused of sexual misconduct. 'Thank you so much for this honour,' Ricky began, as per Variety. 'It's a genuine thrill to be part of such an exclusive club. 'And just looking around earlier at all the other stars, absolute icons, you know? Michael Jackson, Bill Cosby, Fatty Arbuckle…' Jackson, who died in 2009 at the age of 50, has been accused of sexually abusing children at his Neverland ranch, which his estate has continued to deny. In 2005, further child molestation charges went to court, but the singer was acquitted. Director Arbuckle, who died in 1933, was taken to court three times in the 1920s for the rape and manslaughter of actress Virginia Rappe. He was also acquitted and received a written apology from the third jury. Meanwhile, Cosby was convicted of rape in 2018 and spent just under three years in prison following a highly publicised trial. He maintains his innocence, with the Pennsylvania Supreme Court later overturning his conviction. Elsewhere in his acceptance speech, Ricky said sarcastically, 'Wow, this is a huge surprise. I never thought I'd win this today.' 'I haven't even prepared a speech or anything,' he quipped, pulling out a piece of paper. Sporting his trademark black T-shirt and jeans, he added: 'I should firstly apologise for how I'm dressed. This isn't me trying to be cool or disrespectful to the establishment. This is me not having a suit that fits anymore.' The comedian went on to say the nature of his job is being 'not very good at taking things too seriously'. But his speech did include a more earnest moment as he said receiving his star made him feel 'humbled'. He added that his success was a combination of 'luck, persistence, and a little bit of pushing against the tide'. Ricky's addition to the landmark in Los Angeles makes him the 2,813th dedication on the Walk of Fame. He has enjoyed a lengthy career, having created and starred in The Office on BBC, Life's Too Short, and Derek. The stand-up star has won seven Baftas, four Emmys, and four Golden Globes, having hosted the ceremony of the latter several times. Throughout his career, he's been no stranger to a risky joke. In 2023, over 12,000 people signed a petition calling for Netflix to axe his comedy special Armageddon before it was even released after a teaser clip showed him making gags about terminally ill children and using the R-slur. Immediately after the offensive joke, Ricky told the audience of the show: 'These are all jokes, all right? I don't even use that word in real life, the R-word. … I'm playing a role.' Ricky was later quizzed on the divisive material, telling BBC Radio 5 Live listeners that the outrage against him was 'faux'. He also compared the petitioners to 'hecklers'. As soon as it goes on Netflix or as soon as someone writes up a joke that says this is offensive, people go, 'Oh, that's offensive',' he said. More Trending 'They haven't even heard the joke. They weren't there. Ignore them. They don't count. They have no effect on me. They don't count. They're hecklers.' Ricky also previously faced backlash for his SuperNature movie, in which he made remarks about trans people, female comedians, and AIDS. Addressing the matter afterwards on The One Show, Ricky argued: 'I think that's what comedy is for, really – to get us through stuff, and I deal in taboo subjects because I want to take the audience to a place it hasn't been before, even for a split second. 'Most offence comes from when people mistake the subject of a joke with the actual target.' Got a story? Pierce Brosnan addresses criticism of his "terrible" accent in new gangster crime drama

Pierce Brosnan has addressed the criticism of his Irish accent in Paramount+ crime drama MobLand. The James Bond actor stars alongside Tom Hardy and Helen Mirren in the new series as crime family patriarch Conrad Harrigan, who finds himself embroiled in a war against a rival gangster clan. Despite the actor being born and raised in Ireland for over a decade, viewers haven't been convinced by his Irish accent in the series, with many left baffled as they described it as "terrible" and "atrocious" after the first episode's release in March. Addressing the comments during a new interview with RadioTimes (via MetroOnline), Brosnan said: "My own accent is very soft, Conrad's accent is a million miles away from [mine]." The star explained that he went to a dialect coach and told them he needed a Kerry accent, adding: "So he [the coach] gave me the name of a man and I googled the guy and that was it. It was a Kerry accent and so, I just gave it full tilt." Related: Best streaming services Brosnan also discussed his accent during a recent appearance on Today FM, saying he raised his concerns with MobLand's director, Guy Ritchie, before filming the series last year. "Last summer I spoke to Guy for the first time about it and having read the five episodes he said not to worry about it," recalled Brosnan. "[He said], 'We'll just do it 15 minutes on the day, clear your mind, we'll sort it out, don't worry about it'. "Of course, I put the phone down and did worry about it! Five weeks later I was on the set with Tom Hardy and Guy, first day, important dialogue, important information and he just said, 'more Irish, more Irish'." Related: Brosnan went on to say that his Irish accent has "dissipated into the midst of time", adding: "It's somewhat Californian and everything. So, I asked myself, 'What kind of accent would he have?' It was Kerry." The actor was born in Drogheda, County Louth, before moving to Navan in County Meath, where he spent most of his childhood. His family later moved to Scotland, before relocating again to London. MobLand, which will air its final episode this Sunday (1 June), also stars House of the Dragon's Paddy Considine, After Life's Mandeep Dhillon, Downton Abbey's Joanne Froggatt and Top Boy's Jasmine Jobson. Mandeep Dhillon: Seraphina on 'MobLand' is a boss in every single aspect

Photo courtesy of Paramount+ NEW YORK, May 18 (UPI) -- CSI: Vegas, Doctor Who and After Life alum Mandeep Dhillon says Seraphina Harrigan, the character she plays on MobLand, has no trouble standing up to the formidable gangsters in her family. Created by Guy Ritchie and streaming Sundays on Paramount+, the British show follows the Harrigan organized crime clan, led by Seraphina's father Conrad (Pierce Brosnan) and his wife Maeve (Helen Mirren). "She's the result of a one-night-stand her dad had with a stripper at Stringfellows," Dillon, 34, told UPI in a recent Zoom interview. "She's hated by Maeve, but it's also made her get a thick skin. She's a hustler. She's driven by power. She's driven by money, and she will get what she wants," the actress explained. "It's been such a joy to get inside of her head. She really is a boss in every single aspect. She's not afraid to tell people about themselves." This week's episode shows Seraphina returning home to her family in the Cotswalds after she was kidnapped by a rival gang alongside her half-brother Brendan (Daniel Betts) while on a "business trip" in Amsterdam. Although shaken up by her harrowing misadventure abroad -- Brendan is dismembered in front of Seraphina as his horrified parents watched via live-stream -- Seraphina finds comfort in the arms of her loving father and, surprisingly, the manipulative Maeve. "It really is tender. It's actually a beautiful relationship," Dhillon said of Seraphina and Conrad's connection. "Pierce is amazing as a human, so what a joy it is to be able to play his daughter on screen," she added. "Everyone is so scared of Conrad in the show, apart from Seraphina. Seraphina has no fear of her father. She knows that she's good and it sort of makes her feel invincible." Dhillon said this job was a cathartic experience since it allowed her to explore feelings she has about her own family. "I didn't grow up with a dad myself," she explained. "So, actually, it sort of weirdly healed a part of me, receiving a father's love through a character, which is beautiful how art can do that." Before she even tried out for the role, Dhillon said she went down a rabbit hole, watching gangster movies and TV shows. "I was famously one of those people all my life who never watched any gangster film ever and then suddenly I was watching Scarface and Goodfellas and The Godfather and Snatch, Sexy Beast, so by the time the audition came, weirdly, I was like, 'That's interesting, timely,'" she recalled. "So, I'd done it without really known I was doing it." The cast of MobLand also includes Tom Hardy, Joanne Froggatt, Paddy Considine and Lara Pulver. Ricky Gervais Jokes About The Office Spinoff The Paper

We've known for a while that there was going to be a spinoff of The Office , and we just got out first look at The Paper which is set to come to Peacock this September. The story is said to be following the Dunder Mifflin documentary crew as they now focus on a dying newspaper and the people who run it. What's funny is, it's kind of borrowing the premise of another Ricky Gervais show, After Life. Even Gervais himself joked that maybe he should be paid twice for the series. Here's his post: It's like The Office but set in a dying local newspaper, like in Afterlife. Do I get paid twice 😂 — Ricky Gervais (@rickygervais) May 12, 2025 For context, Afterlife followed a character played by Gervais who worked at a local small town newspaper. Admittedly that show wasn't much about the newspaper, but more of Gervais' character dealing with the loss of his wife. I doubt that The Paper is going to be an existential exploration, but it has all the trappings of an Office reboot, from young new characters (like Domhnall Gleeson), plus the office essentially being a doomed business (a newspaper). And while it's set to focus on a completely new crew, some people are sure that Oscar Nunez from The Office is also in the first look image. Who knows, maybe they added Oscar just to make sure to audiences that this is the same world, but we'll just have to wait and see what happens. Watch out for The Paper when it premieres on Peacock sometime in September.
