Bundesliga interest grows in Nayef Aguerd amid Marseille competition
Last summer, Aguerd was on the lookout for a fresh start following a difficult spell at West Ham United. Though clubs such as Porto, Villarreal, Atlético Madrid, Wolfsburg, and Al-Ittihad explored the possibility of signing him, it was Real Sociedad that eventually secured the 29-year-old on a season-long paid loan, without a purchase option, just before the transfer window closed. Advertisement Brought in to replace Robin Le Normand, who left for Atlético, Aguerd made 36 appearances across all competitions (34 starts), proving to be a reliable presence in defence until an injury late in the season sidelined him. Now, with his loan ending and no option to buy in place, Aguerd's future is once again uncertain, and highly coveted. Bayer Leverkusen among leading candidates According to reports from Foot Mercato, Bundesliga leaders Bayer Leverkusen have made Aguerd a defensive priority this summer. With Champions League football on the horizon and potential departures in their own back line, the Moroccan international, who already has Bundesliga suitors from past windows, is seen as an ideal reinforcement. Advertisement But competition will be stiff. Ligue 1 giants Olympique de Marseille have placed Aguerd at the top of their transfer shortlist. The French side, also headed to the Champions League, value his experience in Ligue 1 with Dijon and Rennes, and are pushing hard to bring him back to France. Meanwhile, Real Sociedad would like to retain him permanently, and Atlético Madrid, who tried to sign him last summer, remain in the picture. West Ham set for payday? Aguerd remains under contract with West Ham until June 2027, and the Premier League club is expected to demand a fee in the region of €15–20 million. That price tag, combined with strong interest from clubs across Spain, France, and Germany, gives the Hammers leverage heading into the summer window. For Bundesliga watchers, Bayer Leverkusen's interest could make this one of the more intriguing transfer battles of the summer, especially if other German clubs reignite their interest from last year.

Marseille make West Ham's Nayef Aguerd priority target
Olympique de Marseille are in the market for at least one centre-back this summer and have made West Ham United's Nayef Aguerd (29) their priority target, according to a report from Foot Mercato. Marseille's defence was their achilles heel this season and, ahead of next season's UEFA Champions League campaign, it is an area that they are desperate to strengthen, with at least one addition and likely more. Aymeric Laporte, who is expected to terminate his contract with Al-Nassr in the coming days, has been strongly linked with a move to the Vélodrome. Advertisement Aguerd, who spent the season on loan at Real Sociedad, is set to leave West Ham this summer and is keen on playing in the Champions League. Real Sociedad wish to keep him but there are other top clubs circling, including Atletico Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen. Like the latter, Marseille have made contact with Aguerd's entourage regarding a move. Having already played at Stade Rennais, the Morocco international is open to a return to France. Aguerd Pushes for West Ham Exit
Nayef Aguerd has dealt Graham Potter an early summer blow by making it clear he has no intention of returning to West Ham. The Moroccan international, currently on loan at Real Sociedad, had been earmarked for a return to the Hammers' squad as part of Potter's cost-conscious rebuild. But with financial constraints looming due to PSR regulations, the defender was seen as a ready-made solution to bolster the backline without dipping into the coffers. Instead, Aguerd has reportedly informed the club he wants out permanently, throwing a spanner in West Ham's transfer plans. The 28-year-old, who cost $40 million from Rennes in 2022, still has two years left on his deal but is eyeing a fresh start elsewhere where he can compete for silverware. West Ham now face the challenge of replacing him in an already thin squad, with exits expected across the board and doubts also surrounding Jean-Clair Todibo's future. Aguerd has been one of the best central defenders in La Liga this season, and because of this, there is bound to be plenty of speculation on his future. In recent weeks, he has been linked to Manchester United, and La Real would also dearly love to be able to retain his services on a permanent basis – and they should have the money to do so, given that Martin Zubimendi is expected to leave the club in the summer, with Arsenal favourites to sign him . However, it is not expected to be easy at all for La Real to retain Aguerd's services, with FootballFanCast stating that West Ham do not have any plans to let their defender leave during the summer transfer window, with new head coach Graham Potter keen to have him in his squad for the start of the 2025-26 Premier League season. Nayef Aguerd's Injury Deals Huge Blow to Morocco's AFCON Hopes
Rabat – Walid Regragui's preparations for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) have been thrown into uncertainty as Nayef Aguerd was forced off the field due to injury during the Copa del Rey semi-final return leg last Tuesday. This injury could complicate Regragui's plans for the upcoming continental tournament, requiring him to reassess his options as the competition draws near. Converging reports suggest that Regragui immediately reached out to Aguerd after the match, expressing concern over the injury. A source within the Lions of the Atlas' technical staff notably told the website The New Arab that Regragui instructed the Moroccan team's doctor, Christophe Baudot, to closely monitor Aguerd 's condition and stay in contact with Real Sociedad's medical team. The injury occurred in the 27th minute of the match between Real Sociedad and Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu. Aguerd, a key figure in both Real Sociedad's defense and Morocco's central defense, had to leave the pitch early. The match ended in a 4-4 draw after extra time, with Real Madrid advancing 1-0 on aggregate. While Madrid's victory secured their place in the final, Aguerd's injury became the main concern for Regragui and the national team. Real Sociedad has yet to provide further details on the severity of Aguerd's injury. However, given his history of recurring injury problems, there are growing concerns that he could be sidelined for several weeks. Read also: Walid Regragui: 'This Win Shows We're Getting Stronger' If medical tests reveal that surgery is needed, Aguerd's season – and potentially his participation in AFCON 2025 – could be in jeopardy. This injury comes at a time when Morocco's central defense has already shown signs of vulnerability. During the national team's most recent camp, the right side of the defense, where Jawad El Yamiq has filled in, raised concerns. With the likelihood of Aguerd's unavailability for months, Regragui faces an even more challenging task as he prepares for the 2025 AFCON. If Aguerd requires surgery and misses the tournament, Regragui will need to reconsider his defensive options. As he often says: 'With a strong attack, you win matches, but with a solid defense, you win titles.' Losing Aguerd, a key defensive pillar, would be a significant setback for Morocco's hopes of success in the continental competition. Meanwhile, Morocco's national team has climbed two spots to 12th in the latest FIFA World Rankings, following recent victories against Niger and Tanzania. The team earned an additional 6.06 points, bringing their total to 1,694.24 points for April. This rise coincided with setbacks for Uruguay and Colombia, who both dropped two positions in the rankings. Tags: AFCON 2025Morocco football newsNayef AguerdWalid Regragui

Real Madrid vs Real Sociedad: When, How to Watch & Score Prediction
Real Madrid face a tough test at home today in the second leg of their Copa del Rey semi-final against Real Sociedad – with a 1-0 lead from the first leg. But all eyes will be on the Moroccan encounter between Nayef Aguerd and Brahim Diaz. Kick-off is at 7:30 p.m. Moroccan time (GMT), and fans can catch the action live on SSC1 HD and L'Équipe. Aguerd returns to Sociedad's squad list after an injury layoff. He missed their recent 2-1 win over Real Valladolid, but he is back for the Madrid game. On the other side, Brahim Diaz is expected to feature in the starting lineup to add some creativity in midfield that could be crucial in securing their spot in the final. Madrid, the 20-time Copa del Rey winners, don't want to wait another decade to be crowned champions. Their last win came in 2023, and before that, they last lifted the trophy in the final in 2014. But they are in need of improvement. Their 3-2 win over Leganes showed defensive issues, and their La Liga title challenge is faltering with a seemingly unstoppable Barcelona side three points ahead. Head Coach Carlo Ancelloti will miss Thibaut Courtois, who hasn't trained ahead of the second leg. So, Andriy Lunin will likely start in goal. The Italian tactician could rotate his squad, but players like Endrick, Vinicius Junior, and Rodrygo will be crucial in the attack. Eder Militao and Dani Carvajal are still out for the season, so Frederico Valverde will likely step in as a right-back to fill the gap. Meanwhile, Sociedad's season has been underwhelming after they've struggled this year with a Europa League exit and inconsistent league form. However, their 2-1 win over Real Valladolid last Saturday lifted them to 10th in La Liga, giving them a glimmer of hope to reach a European qualification spot. Sociedad will rely on Ander Barrenetxea, returning from suspension, to join Mikel Oyarzabal and Takefusa Kubo in attack. Martin Zubimendi will be key in midfield, with interest from Madrid and Arsenal. Predicted Lineups: Real Madrid: Lunin, Valverde, Asencio, Alaba, Fran Garcia, Tchouameni, Camavinga, Bellingham, Vinicius, Brahim Diaz, Mbappe. Real Sociedad: Remiro, Aramburu, Zubeldia, Aguerd, Aihen, Zubimendi, Sucic, Turrientes, Kubo, Barrenetxea, Oyarzabal. Score Prediction Despite their flaws, Madrid's attacking firepower should be enough to see them through to the final. Verdict: Real Madrid 2-0 Real Sociedad Tags: Copa del ReyReal Madridreal sociedad
