Al-Azhar condemns Israel's shooting at diplomats in West Bank
CAIRO - 23 May 2025: Al-Azhar condemned in a Thursday statement Israel's attack on a diplomatic delegation of more than 25 Arab and European ambassadors in the West Bank. The diplomats who were conducting a field tour of Jenin city in the occupied West Bank to examine the humanitarian situation there. Egypt, France, Spain, Turkey, Ireland and Italy condemned the Israeli troops, firing at the diplomats. Other countries such as Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain and Uruguay summoned Israel's ambassadors or said they would directly raise the incident with Israel. Al-Azhar also condemned 'the continued blocking by the Zionist occupation of humanitarian aid into the Gaza Strip.' The Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, Sheikh Ahmed al-Tayeb, called on the international community to begin the phase of concrete action, shouldering its responsibilities to save the people of Gaza from a serious humanitarian catastrophe. He called for the highest levels of pressure to open all crossings and facilitate the entry of aid. He also praised the calls issued by the European Union to end the humanitarian blockade of Gaza.

Grand Imam of Al Azhar welcomes India-Pakistan ceasefire
File – Grand Imam of Al-Azhar Ahmed al-Tayeb CAIRO – 11 May 2025: Egypt's Frand Imam of Al Azhar Sheikh Ahmed El Tayeb welcomed the ceasefire agreement announced between India and Pakistan. 'We welcome the ceasefire agreement between India and Pakistan as a significant step toward boosting peace, security, and stability in South Asia and across the world,' said the Grand Imam on his Facebook page on Sunday. 'Peace remains the optimal choice that should govern relations between nations and peoples. Therefore, international efforts must be intensified to bring an end to all conflicts, wars, and hostilities, so that humanity may enjoy a better world filled with safety, goodness, and prosperity,' Sheikh Al-Tayeb added. On Saturday, Egypt welcomed the announced ceasefire between India and Pakistan, achieved through US mediation, while stressing its reliance on the US role for a similar outcome for Gaza. The nuclear-armed South Asian neighbors agreed to a ceasefire on Saturday after four days of fighting—the worst in decades—that threatened to escalate into full-scale war. The Indian foreign secretary announced that both countries agreed to immediately stop the fighting, effective at 5 PM (1130 GMT) today, following talks between their military chiefs. Pakistani Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar confirmed on X: 'Pakistan and India have agreed to a ceasefire with immediate effect.' Several civilians were reportedly killed and many more were injured in the exchanges of attacks initiated by India in response to a last month massacre of 26 people, most of them Indian tourists, in Kashmir – a territory divided between the two nations but claimed in full by both. Grand Sheikh of Al-Azhar congratulates Pope Leo XIV on his election as Pope of the Vatican
The Grand Sheikh of Al-Azhar, Ahmed al-Tayeb, on Thursday, congratulated Pope Leo XIV on his election as the Pontiff of the Vatican. In a post on his official Facebook page, Sheikh al-Tayeb wrote: 'I extend my sincere congratulations to Pope Leo XIV on the occasion of his election as the Pope of the Catholic Church.' He added: 'We look forward to continuing to work with His Holiness to consolidate interfaith dialogue and promote the values of human fraternity, in order to spread global peace and coexistence, and a better future for humanity.' Earlier on Thursday, white smoke billowed from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican this afternoon, signaling the selection of the new Pope. Robert Prevost was announced as the first American in history to be elected Pope of the Vatican.

Al-Azhar imam: Pope Francis strengthened Islamic world ties
Egypt's Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, Sunni Islam's prestigious seat of learning, said Monday that Pope Francis will be remembered for his championing of interfaith dialogue. Following the pope's death, Sheikh Ahmed al-Tayeb, calling Francis "his brother," said he had "strengthened relations with Al-Azhar and the Islamic world, through his visits to numerous Islamic and Arab countries, and through his views demonstrating fairness and humanity, particularly regarding the aggression on Gaza and combating abhorrent Islamophobia".
