Cannes: Jasmila Zbanic Planning ‘Quo Vadis, Aida?' Follow-Up, ‘The Missing Part'
Jasmila Zbanic is planning a sequel to her Oscar-nominated drama Quo Vadis, Aida?, about the Srebrenica massacre, which will follow the aftermath of the genocidal killings in Bosnia in 1995.
Quo Vadis, Aida?: The Missing Part will trace the story of the women left behind after Bosnian Serb forces under commander Ratko Mladic murdered more than 7,000 civilians, primarily men and boys, in the most violent incident of the Bosnian War. Jasna Djuricic will return to star as Aida, a local translator for the UN peacekeeping forces who tried, in vain, to save her husband and sons from being massacred and who now leads the fight to uncover the truth of the killings and bring those responsible to justice.

Quo Vadis, Aida? premiered at the Venice Film Festival in 2020 and picked up two BAFTA nominations and the best film prize at the European film awards, as well as an Academy Award nod for best international feature. Damir Ibrahimovic of Bosnian outfit Deblokada will produce Quo Vadis, Aida?: The Missing Part in co-production with Erik Hemmendorff of Sweden's Plattform Produktion, and Swedish film financier Film i Väst.
The project was among those unveiled at Film i Väst's annual Cannes film festival lunch on Thursday.
Other highlights from the company's upcoming slate include Good Mothers, a Pretty Little Lies-style small-town melodrama, directed by Amalie Nesby Fick, based on a best-selling novel adapted by award-winning director and screenwriter Nikolaj Arcel (The Promised Land, A Royal Affair) and featuring Danish stars Sidse Babett Knudsen (Borgen, Westworld) and Sofie Grabol (The Killing); the animated feature Dante from Swedish director Linda Hambäck (The Ape Star), which features a voice cast led by Stellan Skarsgard (Andor, Dune) and David Dencik (A Royal Affair); and Bad Moon Rising, a romantic drama directed by Erik Poppe (The Emigrants) from the first-ever original screenplay by Nobel Prize-winning writer Jon Fosse.
Other features Film i Väst is backing are Bloody Men, a literary adaptation from Jens Sjögren (I Am Zlatan) featuring Swedish stars Aliette Opheim (Black Crab) and Filip Berg (Whisky on the Rocks, Strul); Burden of Justice, from Threesome director Lisa Linnertorp; and Will You Care if I Die?, based on Nicolas Lunabba's autobiographical best-seller of the same name, directed by Rojda Sekersöz (Netflix's Young Royals).
Film i Väst previously announced it had boarded Fjord, the English-language debut for Palme d'Or winning Romanian director Cristian Mungiu (4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days) starring Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve, which Neon just pre-bought for release in North America.
The company, which operates studios in Trollhättan, Sweden, is a backer in three films in Cannes competition this year: Oliver Hermanus' The History of Sound, starring Paul Mescal and Josh O'Connor; Joachim Trier's Sentimental Value, with Reinsve and Skarsgard; and Tarik Saleh's Eagles of the Republic, starring Fares Fares.
