TSB investigating helicopter on training flight crashes in Whitehorse

WHITEHORSE - A team with Canada's Transportation Safety Board is in Whitehorse to investigate a helicopter crash. Spokesman Liam MacDonald says the Airbus AS350B was on a training flight with two people onboard when it crashed around 3 p.m. on Friday. MacDonald says the helicopter, operated by Horizon Helicopters, flew out of the Erik Nielsen Whitehorse International Airport and crashed about 10 kilometres east of the airport. ARTICLE CONTINUES BELOW MacDonald would not say whether the two people onboard survived the crash, and neither RCMP nor the company immediately responded to a request for information. A statement from the safety board says its team will gather information and assess what happened. It says it is not the function of the board to assign fault or determine civil or criminal liability. Transportation Safety Board investigating helicopter crash near Whitehorse

The Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) is investigating a Friday helicopter crash near Whitehorse. The crash happened during a Horizon Helicopters test flight, around 3 p.m. Friday, TSB spokesperson Liam Macdonald said Saturday. The helicopter, an Airbus AS350B model, had recently departed from the Whitehorse airport at the time of the crash, he said. MacDonald confirmed two pilots were in the helicopter at the time of the crash, but did not say whether they were injured. CBC News has contacted Horizon Helicopters and the Yukon RCMP for more information about the crash. The TSB investigates any crashes or safety breaches for air, marine, or rail transportation in Canada. MacDonald said two investigators with the agency would be arriving in Whitehorse on Saturday afternoon to assess the crash. This initial assessment, which could take up to two weeks, will determine how in-depth the investigation will be, he said.
