Adelaide United appoint Brazilian-born head coach
Brazilian-born Airton Andrioli, who is long renowned in youth soccer circles, has been appointed coach of Adelaide United's A-League Men's team. Andrioli, the man behind the Reds' widely acclaimed youth program, has signed a two-year deal to replace Carl Veart. "I'm incredibly honoured and humbled to be given the opportunity," Andrioli said in a statement on Monday. "This is a very special moment in my life and something I won't take for granted. Before that, he spent a decade as Football South Australia's technical director and played a pivotal role in the state's acclaimed talent pathways. Andrioli, who played for West Adelaide in the National Soccer League (NSL) between 1994 and 1996, also had a stint as assistant coach with the Young Socceroos in 2015/16. United's technical director Ernest Faber said Andrioli was ideally suited to replace Veart, who split with the Reds after a five-year tenure. "Airton knows this club very well," Faber said. "He's the architect of our youth program, which is the lifeblood of Adelaide United and he's already played a significant role in the progress we've made over the past few years. "He'll continue the great work he's been doing, but in a different capacity - backing young players, playing attacking football, and building a strong team culture. "We believe Airton will help us grow steadily while staying true to the identity of Adelaide United." The Reds were tipped from this year's finals with a 3-2 loss to Western United in an elimination final.

The Reds on Monday confirmed the appointment of Andrioli, previously an assistant to Veart and head of the club's youth program, on a two-year deal. News Corp Australia revealed on April 10 – the same day that the Reds announced that Veart's contract would not be renewed for next season – that Andrioli was the favourite to be the club's next coach. The 60-year-old Brazilian has strong links with South Australian football. Andrioli played for West Adelaide in the old National Soccer League from 1994 to 1996 and was Football South Australia's technical director from 2010 to 2020 before linking with the Reds. 'I'm incredibly honoured and humbled to be given the opportunity to lead Adelaide United's A-League Men's side,' he said. 'This is a very special moment in my life and something I won't take for granted. 'I've always believed in doing the hard work, especially when no one is watching, and leaving the rest in God's hands. The club said Andrioli would 'blend' that with 'tactical discipline and the ability to adapt based on each match's demands'. The Reds – who were knocked out in the first week of the A-League finals series earlier this month – also declared that Andrioli was 'determined to honour Carl Veart's legacy while carving his own path forward', and a 'commitment to South Australian talent' would 'remain a cornerstone' of the club's 'football identity'. Andrioli will continue to lead the Reds' youth team in the NPL South Australia competition until the end of next month before the start of the A-League team's pre-season training program on July 1, by which time Andrioli's coaching staff will be confirmed.

Ethan Alagich wins Aurelio Vidmar Medal as Adelaide United prepares for new coach and return of Craig Goodwin
Socceroos star Craig Goodwin's return to Adelaide United is imminent as the Reds prepare for life under coach-in-waiting Airton Andrioli. The Carl Veart era officially came to an end on Wednesday at the club's awards night, where 21-year-old midfielder Ethan Alagich was named player of the season and awarded the Aurelio Vidmar Medal. 'Ethan's had a fantastic season,' departing coach Veart said of the son of Reds great Richie Alagich. 'His consistency, maturity, and work ethic have been outstanding, especially for someone so young. 'He's stepped up in big moments and become a vital part of our midfield. The whole club is proud of what he's achieved.' While the Reds are yet to announce the appointment of Andrioli – first mooted by News Corp Australia as Veart's likely replacement – confirmation of the Brazilian's elevation to the head coaching role is expected by the end of the month. Goodwin, 33, is set for another stint at the Reds after two seasons with Saudi Arabian club Al-Wehda. His return comes as the club's Spanish veterans Isaias Sanchez and Javi Lopez retire from football. Isaias and Lopez will remain with the Reds as part of the club's coaching staff. Reds head of football Marius Zanin said: 'We're incredibly fortunate that their journey with the club will continue in coaching roles, where they will shape the next generation and pass on the values they have embodied throughout their careers.' Other changes in the squad will includes the departures of midfielder Ryan Tunnicliffe and utility Josh Cavallo, who both won't be offered new contracts. Meanwhile, American midfielder Erin Healy was awarded the Dianne Alagich Medal on Wednesday night after being named the Reds' women's player of the season. Adelaide's women's coach Adrian Stenta said Healy had been 'outstanding' in her performances and 'professionalism'. 'She arrived straight from Europe and hit the ground running, and even after injury, made a huge difference in our finals push,' Stenta said. 'Her mindset, creativity, and team-first attitude have made her a key part of the group, and this award is thoroughly deserved.'
