Muktsar double murder case: 1 person apprehended, relatives of Congress MP Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa booked
The police in Punjab's Muktsar apprehended a person Monday morning in connection with the murder of a man and his son, said to be relatives of former Congress MLA Ajit Inder Singh Mofar, over the weekend.
According to the Muktsar police, the First Information Report (FIR) was lodged based on the statement of the deceased's daughter, Sajia Brar, against Devinder Singh, Nacchatarpal Singh Brar, his son Ravinder Singh Brar, and an unidentified person. The Brars have been booked under charges of criminal conspiracy.
Nachhatarpal Singh Brar is a former president of the Muktsar district Congress Committee, and the father-in-law of Congress MP Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa.
According to the police complaint filed by Sajia Brar, Devinder Singh fired two shots each at her father and brother.
Akhil Chaudhary, Senior Superintendent of Police, Muktsar, told The Indian Express, 'The police are investigating the murder to find out who was involved in the crime. We have also taken CCTV footage of the area, which has given us further leads. We have apprehended one person for questioning. Our teams are on the job, and we will be cracking the case soon'.
The police said they will not reveal the identity of the person who has been apprehended, as it could hamper the investigation.
On Saturday night, Vinay Pratap Singh, 55, and his son Surya Pratap Singh, 23, landlords in the Abul Khurana village in Muktsar and current residents of Chandigarh, were shot dead while inspecting wheat harvesting on the Abul Khurana-Lalbai Road over a land dispute.
Vinay and Surya were with their relative, Darshan Singh Mofar, Saturday when they were intercepted by Devinder Singh and another person riding a tractor. Devinder allegedly opened fire, killing both Vinay and Surya on the spot. Darshan Singh managed to escape unhurt, according to police sources.
The victims, who owned around 170 acres of land in Abul Khurana, were embroiled in a long-standing land dispute with Devinder over 20 acres of land in the same village, according to sources. The matter was already being contested in court, and efforts by village elders to mediate had failed.
'The deceased Vinay Pratap Singh was my nephew (elder sister's son)…. The police should arrest all the accused involved in the incident,' said Ajitinder Singh Mofar.
Former MLA Ajit Inder Singh Mofar described the killings as shocking and tragic, and said tensions between the two families had been simmering for years.
