Tribals protest land handover, claim ownership rights

1 2 3 Ranchi: Hundreds of tribal villagers in Ranchi's Argora on Monday gheraoed the circle office alleging illegal allotment of land by the circle officer to the Army and demanded the immediate cessation of unauthorised land allocations and called for a tripartite dialogue involving the administration, military, and villagers to resolve ongoing land disputes. The protesters highlighted the long-standing land dispute between the military and local farmers, dating back to the post-World War II era. According to them, about 1,086.87 acres in nine mouzas were handed over to the army by their forefathers for three years against crop compensation. "But after the war finished, the military did not return the land to the villagers and handed that over to the airport authorities. The military is now claiming ownership over the same amount of land in only three mouzas out of the nine, posing a threat to the livelihoods and culture of the villagers. They stop us from farming or constructing houses in our lands, whereas the villagers have ownership of the land," said Ajit Oraon, president of Birsa Munda Airport Bisthapit Morcha, under whose banner the villagers gheraoed the circle office. Oraon added, "We gathered there to get justifications from the circle office based on what documents the army is claiming rights over our lands. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Scam Exposed: What They Won't Tell You about zero trust! The protesters alleged that the army is claiming their rights over the lands based on a self-proclaimed land document. Speaking to TOI, Argora circle officer Suman Saurabh said that the army's claim over the land is justified, and they have verified land documents. "The forefathers of the villagers received compensation for handing over the land to the army that does not ensure that they will also get compensation. The army has brought verified accusation documents of the claimed land," the circle officer added.
