Gene Hackman's daughter told cops to bury dog with Betsy Arakawa after police discovered mummified bodies, newly released bodycam footage shows

Gene Hackman's dog should be cremated and buried with his wife, Betsy Arakawa, his daughter told New Mexico authorities after the mummified bodies of the reclusive couple and their beloved pooch were found last month, according to newly released police bodycam video. The phone call between Hackman's daughter, Elizabeth, and a Sante Fe County Sheriff's officer was featured in footage released by the agency Friday, TMZ first reported. 'Yeah, I'm thinking cremate the dog and bury it with Betsy,' Elizabeth can be heard telling the deputy. 'The French Connection' star's grieving daughter also made a heartbreaking request. 'If the dog was wearing a collar could you save that for me?' she asked, according to the footage. The dog, a kelpie mix named Zinna, was described as being 'mummified' due to the dry New Mexico air and died of dehydration and starvation, veterinarians concluded. Zinna, short for 'Zinfandel,' was found in a crate near the body of Arakawa, 65, whose cause of death was the rare rodent-borne disease hantavirus pulmonary syndrome. Hackman, 95, succumbed to complications from heart problems and advanced Alzheimer's disease about a week after Arakawa died, officials said. Hackman and his wife were partially mummified when they were discovered roughly a week after their deaths, with the 'Unforgiven' star's body found in a mudroom while Arakawa's was located in a bathroom, near a crate that contained Zinna's body. The couple's two other dogs — Bear, a German shepherd, and Nikita, an Akita-shepherd mix — were found alive on their palatial property and adopted by Joey Padilla Sante Fe Tails pet spa. In other newly released bodycam footage, sheriff's officers speak to a groundskeeper, who got emotional when realizing that Hackman and Arawawa — whom he described as being warm and friendly — and visibly upset when he learned they had died in their longtime home. 'I didn't see anything that would make me think, 'something's going on,'' the worker told officers according to TMZ. The landscaper further added his dismay at 'seeing them like that.' Elizabeth Hackman, 63, was one of three children the two-time Oscar winner shared with first wife, Faye Maltese. Earlier this week, his family filed to block the release of autopsy results, photos and investigation details for Hackman and Arakawa, 65.

Gene Hackman and Betsy Arakawa's two surviving dogs find new homes weeks after sudden deaths

Gene Hackman and Betsy Arakawa's two surviving dogs have been placed in new homes. The bodies of Hackman, 95, and Arakawa, 65, were discovered in their sprawling Santa Fe, New Mexico home on February 26 by a caretaker. One of their dogs, Zinna, was found dead in a crate near Arakawa. The couple's two surviving dogs, Bear and Nikita, were found on the property. The two dogs were initially placed with a local pet daycare. But now, they've been separated, according to the Daily Mail. Joey Padilla, the owner of Santa Fe Tails where Bear and Nikita were temporarily housed, confirmed the German Shephard and Akita-shepherd mix have been sent to new homes. Padilla couldn't share further details on the new owners but did reveal that one dog was placed in a home out-of-state after the couple's estate lawyer approved the decision. 'We went through stringent efforts to ensure the best homes were found and the dogs have already begun settling into their new lives,' Padilla said in a statement. 'We are all thankful for the concern and well wishes Bear and Nikita have received during their transition.' Padilla, 42, developed a close bond with Hackman and Arakawa, who together invested in Santa Fe Tails and another of Padilla's businesses, the Mail reports. He said people from around the country offered to take the dogs in after the tragic deaths of the Oscar winner and his wife rattled the nation. Arakawa collapsed in the bathroom and died of hantavirus about a week before Hackman, according to chief medical examiner Heather Jarrell. Initial reports believed Arakawa died on February 11. However, the latest update from the Santa Fe Sheriff's Office revealed that Arakawa made a phone call to Cloudberry Health to speak with a doctor on February 12. Hackman was found dead in the home's mudroom, and is believed to have died on February 18. His cause of death was ruled to be heart disease, with Alzheimer's as a contributing factor. Officials believe it's possible he wasn't aware Arakawa had died. A necropsy conducted by the State Department of Agriculture's veterinary lab determined Zinna's cause of death was dehydration and starvation. The 12-year-old Australian Kelpie mixed breed recently had a major surgery requiring it to be kept in a crate. Funeral plans for the couple have not yet been made.

Santa Fe authorities update timeline on the last days of Gene Hackman and his wife

Investigators in Santa Fe, New Mexico have learned new information related to the deaths of actor Gene Hackman and his wife Betsy Arakawa that has changed the timeline of their final days. Hackman and Arakawa, who have been married since 1991, were found dead at their home in February. Earlier this month, the New Mexico medical investigator's office revealed that Arakawa and Hackman both died of natural causes. Their deaths happened at least a week apart and are attributed to different causes. Authorities had previously based Arakawa's likely date of death on what they'd pieced together about her activity, stating that Arakawa's last known communication was on February 11. She was seen on surveillance video going into stores that day before coming back to the gated community where they lived at around 5:15 p.m. However, after obtaining cell phone data, investigators have learned Arakawa used her cell phone on February 12. 'We can now confirm that Mrs. Hackman's phone was utilized on the morning of February 12 to call a medical center in Santa Fe, Cloudberry Health. A total of three calls were made that morning, all to the medical center,' the Santa Fe Sherriff's Office said in a statement. 'One incoming call was made to Mrs. Hackman from the same medical center that afternoon. That appeared as a missed call on Mrs. Hackman's cell phone.' Arakawa, 65, died of Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, a rare disease that can infect humans through contact with infected rodents, according to the New Mexico medical investigator's office. Her body was found on the floor of a bathroom in the couple's home. Hackman, 95, likely died several days after Arakawa, on February 18, when his pacemaker last recorded his heartbeat, authorities have said. The Oscar-winning actor died of causes related to cardiovascular illness and had advanced Alheimer's disease, which authorities said was 'a significant contributory factor' to his death. The couple had three dogs: Zinna, Nikita and Bear. Zinna, an Australian Kelpie mix, was found deceased in a kennel in the bathroom where Arakawa was found. However, the couple's surviving dogs have been adopted into new homes. 'In response to numerous concerned inquiries about the Hackman's dogs, both Bear and Nikita have been placed in appropriate homes,' the personal representative for the estates said. 'Both are safe, healthy and adjusting to their new environments.' According to a statement on the Santa Fe County Sheriff's Facebook, the German Shepherd and the Akita-shepherd mix were found roaming the Hackman's property. The home's front and back doors were left ajar, allowing the dogs to wander in and out. The Santa Fe County Animal Control Division worked with family to make sure the dogs were kept safe. CNN's Jennifer Sherwood contributed to this report.
