Akris opens first Chicago boutique
Swiss fashion house Akris has opened the doors to its first standalone boutique in Chicago. Located at 101 East Oak Street in the city's iconic Gold Coast neighborhood, the 3,500-square-foot space was brought to life through a close collaboration between Akris creative director Albert Kriemler and David Chipperfield Architects Milan, debuting a new design concept. The team paid homage to the historic character of Oak Street by preserving the building's original red brick façade while introducing a refined metal-glass exterior. 'Oak Street has always been special – its rich history, grand architecture, its people. We are proud to be a new part of this neighborhood,' said Kriemler. 'As a sign of respect, it was important for us to preserve the historic façade while also introducing something new – a metal-glass façade in the best of David Chipperfield's architecture. David's work acknowledges that architecture is not a static artifact – this is also what I love about fashion: there is always an evolution.' Inside, the two-level space is wrapped in white-painted maple panels that line the walls and ceilings, with ready-to-wear pieces appearing to float, suspended on delicate aluminum rails held by nearly invisible cables. Natural light pours in through both the new glass façade and original brick window openings, highlighting the boutique's stone flooring in Pietra di Vicenza Grigia. Upstairs, ivory horsehair and beige mélange cashmere line the fitting rooms. The boutique begins with handbags and accessories, and leads into the ready-to-wear collections. The store opens with the latest collections from Akris, Akris punto, and Akris accessories. Akris operates its own boutiques in major cities around the globe. Its collections are also available in over 300 selected points of distribution worldwide.
