KUWAIT CITY, May 22: The Meteorological Department has issued a forecast warning of very hot weather conditions across the country over the weekend, with hot nights and active winds expected to stir up dust in some areas. Speaking to KUNA, Director General of the Meteorological Department Dharar Al-Ali explained that Kuwait is currently affected by the Indian monsoon depression, which is accompanied by a hot and dry air mass. This system is driving temperatures higher and bringing in light to moderate northwesterly winds. According to Al-Ali, Thursday's weather will be extremely hot, with northwesterly winds blowing at moderate to active speeds between 20 and 50 kilometers per hour, likely causing dust storms in some regions. The maximum temperature is forecast to range between 47 and 49 degrees Celsius. Sea conditions will be moderate to rough, with wave heights between 3 and 6 feet. During the night, conditions are expected to remain hot, with northwesterly winds at speeds ranging from 12 to 35 kilometers per hour. Minimum temperatures are anticipated to fall between 27 and 29 degrees Celsius. The sea will be light to moderate, with wave heights between 2 and 4 feet. On Friday, the extreme heat will persist, accompanied by northwesterly to variable winds ranging from 8 to 35 kilometers per hour. Temperatures are forecast to peak between 48 and 50 degrees Celsius. The sea is expected to remain calm to moderate, with waves between 1 and 4 feet. Friday night will continue to be hot, with light to moderate winds from the northwest to variable directions at speeds of 6 to 30 kilometers per hour. Minimum temperatures will remain between 27 and 29 degrees Celsius, and sea conditions will be light to moderate, with wave heights ranging from 1 to 4 feet. Looking ahead to Saturday, Al-Ali said the weather will again be very hot, with northwesterly to variable winds blowing at speeds between 8 and 35 kilometers per hour. TRENDS symposium explores China-MENA region cooperation under the Global Security Initiative

19 May 2025 12:14 ABU DHABI (ALETIHAD)TRENDS Research & Advisory hosted a symposium titled 'Cooperation between China and the Middle East and North Africa Region under the Global Security Initiative (GSI),' in collaboration with the China Center for Europe and Africa of the China International Communications Group (CICG), and Foreign Languages Press. The event saw the attendance of diplomats, thinkers, and researchers from the region and China. Enriching the Discussion Dr. Mohamed Abdullah Al-Ali, CEO of TRENDS Research & Advisory, opened the symposium with a welcoming address in which he expressed his gratitude to the partners at CICG for their commitment to strengthening joint cooperation with TRENDS. He noted that this partnership lies at the core of TRENDS' global research vision—serving as a bridge for constructive, knowledge-based dialogue among diverse cultures and academic Al-Ali reviewed China's Global Security Initiative (GSI), introduced in April 2022, underlining its core principles aimed at ensuring security and promoting global peace, particularly achieving common security, adheremce to the UN Charter, respect for state sovereignty, and peaceful dispute settlement. He noted that these principles align with the region's strategic perceptions toward a pluralistic international order built on sustainable security, respect for sovereignty, and peaceful conflict emphasised that the MENA region needs the spirit of this initiative to resolve crises, combat terrorism, and address climate and cyber challenges. He also noted that strong economic ties, and the accession of many countries in the region to the Belt and Road Initiative, pave the way for greater cooperation under the Al-Ali concluded by expressing hope that this symposium would help enrich discussion on expanding future cooperation between China and the region. Spirit of SolidarityFollowing the welcoming remarks, Zhang Yiming, Ambassador of the People's Republic of China to the UAE, delivered a keynote speech. Ambassador Yiming noted that the world is witnessing unprecedented changes and mounting security challenges, making it vital to focus on implementing the GSI in the Middle East, and to strengthen thecooperation between China and the Ambassador reviewed the initiative proposed by President Xi Jinping at the Boao Forum for Asia in 2022, which calls for adapting to the changing international landscape with a spirit of solidarity, and for facing challenges with a win-win mentality. He affirmed that the initiative has taken root in the Middle East, and contributed to addressing various Yiming noted that China and the countries of the Middle East, under the umbrella of the GSI, have entered the best historical period in their relations, with cooperation in various fields reaching remarkable landmarks. The Role of TranslationMs. Jiang Lili, Director of the French Language Department at Foreign Languages Press, delivered a speech on the role of translation within the framework of the GSI. She affirmed that translation serves as a bridge between civilisations, and carries the responsibility of promoting international understanding and serving global governance. She outlined the key priorities of the publishing house's work in this field, which include commitment to the principles of honesty and accuracy in translation, promotion of dialogue between civilisations, the application of diverse communication strategies, and a focus on avoiding misunderstandings arising from cultural called for continued commitment to professionalism and innovation among translators so they can contribute to building a community with a shared future for humanity. DialogueProfessor Yi Baigui, from Beijing Foreign Studies University and Vice Chairman of the Beijing Federation of Literary and Art Circles, affirmed that understanding global security requires moving beyond narrow interpretations toward a broader vision that places civilisational dialogue at the heart of any peace project. He argued that the GSI represents a serious attempt to transcend the Cold War logic by embracing inclusiveness, integration, cooperation, and sustainability, thus opening the door for expanding cultural dialogue. Baigui highlighted the historical depth of Sino-Arab relations, and pointed to the unique role that the arts play in bringing peoples closer together. He concluded with three recommendations for enhancing civilisational cooperation between China and the Arab world, including encouraging comparative research, supporting a new generation of educated youth, and focusing on exchanges in the spheres of everyday life. Supporting DevelopmentMs. Cai Lili, Director of the Political Editing Department at Foreign Languages Press, emphasised that the GSI represents a Chinese strategic pathway aimed at fostering peace and development, and at building a community with a shared future for humanity. She focused on the importance of translation and publishing in promoting understanding between civilisations, and presented the publishing house's role in introducing Chinese thought to the world, noting the translation of the book 'Xi Jinping: On Governance' into 42 languages. Lili also highlighted President Xi Jinping's use of Arab proverbs in his speeches as an indicator of cultural affinity. She called for deepening cooperation in the fields of publishing, translation, and cultural exchange. Depth of ExperienceIn turn, Dr. Ahmed Al-Saeed, CEO of Bayt Al Hikma for Culture Group, affirmed that the Arab world views the concept of security from the depth of experience, being a region that has suffered from turmoil and conflicts. KUWAIT CITY, May 17: The Higher Committee of the Kuwait Media Award (Sheraa) announced that media professionals can begin submitting their works for consideration starting Sunday, with the submission period running until July 18. Submissions can be made through the dedicated page on the Ministry of Information's official website. In a statement issued on Saturday, Saad Al-Ali, Chairman of the Higher Committee of the Award, emphasized that the initiative is part of the Ministry of Information's efforts to support and develop Kuwait's media landscape. Al-Ali expressed the committee's commitment to recognizing outstanding media works across various categories, including digital media. He encouraged creative and accomplished Kuwaiti media professionals to participate in the 'Sheraa' awards, noting that the competition is a reflection of Kuwait's deep appreciation for the significant influence media has in shaping perspectives, fostering dialogue, and contributing to development. This year's launch of the award coincides with Kuwait's designation as the Arab Capital of Culture and Media for 2025, adding a distinctive regional significance to the event. Al-Ali also expressed his gratitude to the Minister of Information and Culture, Abdulrahman Al-Mutairi, for his support in spotlighting the work of distinguished Kuwaiti media figures through this prestigious award, which was first announced in January.
