Al Jazeera wins two Peabody Awards for documentaries on Gaza war carnage

Al Jazeera Media Network has been honoured with two prestigious Peabody Awards, one of the most esteemed accolades in broadcast storytelling. The awards recognise the Al Jazeera English Fault Lines documentary The Night Won't End in the News & Documentary category, and the Al Jazeera English Digital film One Day in Gaza from the series Close Up, in the Interactive & Immersive category. The 85th annual Peabody award winners were announced on May 1, 2025, in advance of its annual ceremony in Los Angeles on June 1, 2025. The awards honour intelligent, powerful and moving stories told in broadcast and digital media. Al Jazeera English's Fault Lines documentary The Night Won't End uncovers the tragic human cost of war. It depicts the realities of the unrelenting Israeli bombing campaign on Gaza, the unsafe 'safe zones,' and arbitrary executions through the eyes of three families during the initial 15 months of the war. The film investigates the death of five-year-old Hind Rajab, who was waiting to be rescued from a car where her family members had already been shot dead. Two medics dispatched to rescue her were also killed, as verified by a forensic watchdog Al-Arian, executive producer of Fault Lines, stated, 'No single piece can fully capture the scale of the atrocities in Gaza, but we aimed through investigative journalism and on-the-ground storytelling to offer a glimpse of what life has been like. We are honoured by this recognition because it helps bring more attention to a continuing story the world needs to see. Though we filmed this over a year ago, the horrors we documented remain a daily reality for more than 2 million Palestinians in Gaza.' To date, The Night Won't End has garnered multiple awards, including in the coveted International Current Affairs category at the Royal Television Society Awards in the United Kingdom, the Overseas Press Club prize for best TV, video or documentary about international affairs, and the long-form award from the Centre for Information Resilience Open-Source Film Awards. The One Day in Gaza film from the series Close Up is a compilation of videos recorded by 10 individuals in Gaza, who were asked to document moments throughout their day, thereby helping viewers understand the immense hardships and constant dangers faced by Palestinians living under the constant bombardment in Gaza. Juan Carlos Van Meek, director of digital innovation and programming, expressed his gratitude for awarding the team the Peabody Award, stating, 'I am immensely proud of our team's relentless efforts in amplifying the humanity of Palestinians living in Gaza under constant bombardment. Through the brave voices of people on the ground, we have captivated millions of viewers and helped sustain global attention on the ongoing genocide, ensuring their stories are not forgotten.' The recognition of these documentaries underscores Al Jazeera's commitment to highlighting the profound human experiences amid conflict. As the situation in Gaza continues to unfold, The Network remains dedicated to shedding light on the stories that matter, ensuring that the voices of those affected are heard on a global platform.

Sami Al-Arian, Former SFU Professor Deported for Terror Links, Defends Mahmoud Khalil: It's Not Illegal to Be Pro-Hamas - Supreme Court Rulings Allow Membership in Any Group; American Values Are Being

Former South Florida University professor Sami Al-Arian, who was deported from the United States to Turkey due to his terror links, discussed the arrest of Columbia University activist Mahmoud Khalil in a March 12, 2025 interview. He suggested that 'American cherished principles have been shredded by this administration and previous ones" in order to "save Zionism from its inevitable fate." Al-Arian argued that even if Khalil were pro-Hamas, it is not illegal to support Hamas, but rather to provide aid to a terrorist group. He further claimed that the Supreme Court has ruled that a person can be a member of a U.S.-designated terror group but cannot aid it. Sami Al-Arian was charged with conspiring to provide material support to the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ), a U.S.-designated terrorist organization. He was convicted, served time in federal prison, and was deported to Turkey, where he currently serves as a professor of public affairs and the director of the Center for Islam and Global Affairs (CIGA) at Sabahattin Zaim University in Istanbul. On April 26, 2024, Al-Arian posted a photo of his wife, Nahla Al-Arian, at the Columbia University encampment on X – formerly Twitter. On May 1, he addressed the student encampment at the University of Chicago and on May 6, 2024, he published an op-ed in support of the anti-Israel campus activism on the website of Turkey's state-run Anadolu Agency.

Professor Sami Al-Arian, Deported From The U.S. For Terror Links: Our Goal Is To Dismantle The State Of Israel; October 7 Gave Us Ideas On How This Can Be Done; Israeli Jews Can Go To Muslim Countries From Morocco To Indonesia

In a January 14, 2025 talk at the Islamabad, Pakistan Institute of Policy Studies, former South Florida University professor Sami Al-Arian, who was deported from the United States to Turkey due to his terror links, argued that "dismantling" the "Zionist regime" is the solution to the Palestinian issue. He stated: "This is not a Palestinian problem, it is an Israeli problem." He asserted that Zionism came about because Europe "opted to export its excess Jews" to the Middle East, however, Palestinians find this unacceptable. Al-Arian suggested that if Europe cannot take Israelis in, they can go to Muslim countries, from Morocco to Indonesia, where they can live as immigrants without sovereignty. He said that the October 7 attack has given many ideas and thoughts and drawn a "map of how this could be done." Sami Al-Arian was charged with conspiring to provide material support to the Palestinian Islamic Jihad, a U.S.-designated terrorist organization. Sami Al-Arian: "Our goal should be to dismantle the Zionist regime. We are not talking about killing Jews, here, because as I said earlier, the Jews in Islam – we have no problems, because we recognize them. We do not fight the Jews because of their faith, we fight the aggressors – the Zionists. And since we brought this in, let me define who a Zionist is. A Zionist is any person who believes, acknowledges, or recognizes that Jews has a sovereign right in Palestine, exclusive right in Palestine. [...] "If you believe in a two-state solution you are 78% Zionist, because you believe that they have a 78% right to settle in Palestine. [...] "This is not a Palestinian problem, it is an Israeli problem that is going to impact and effect every single person, not only in the Muslim world but across the world. [...] "Our civilizational solution to the problem of Zionism is this: Zionism started because Europe could not integrate its Jews, it was persecuting its Jews, so it opted to export its excess Jews to this part of the world, and to make sure that they will stay here, to make sure this part of the world will stay in the state of weakness that it is, and we say that this is unacceptable – you cannot do that at the expense of the Palestinians. [...] "If Europe cannot take it, then they can be immigrants in any part of the Muslim world, from Morocco to Indonesia, but not at the expense of Palestinian rights – just as immigrants, not as a sovereign state. [...] "When you look at [October 7] Al-Aqsa Flood – it gave us a lot of ideas and thoughts, and it basically gives us the map of how this could be done. This is not a final battle, this was a very important battle to understand where we are and where we are heading."

Former USF Professor Sami Al-Arian Deported from U.S. Due to Terror Links in Address to UChicago Encampment: You Are on the Right Course; We will See Victory Together; the Zionist Lobby Wants You to Believe Everything Started on 7/10, Divert Attention from the Real Problem with This Terrorist 'Nonsense'

Former University of South Florida Professor Sami Al-Arian, who was deported from the United States due to his terror connections, addressed the anti-Israel student encampment at the University of Chicago on May 1, 2024, via video call. In his speech, Al-Arian stated that the Zionist lobby and the "Zionist entrenched interests" in America are very powerful, warning the students to expect all forms of intimidation. He added that they want to make it seem like everything started on October 7, calling the 'nonsense' talk about terrorism a distortion of facts that diverts attention from the real issues. Al-Arian emphasized, 'This is not about Jews, this is about Palestinians. The Europeans had problems with Jews; I don't have a problem with Jews.' He continued, 'We need to come together, all campuses, strategize […] you are on the right course, just continue the course, […] and one day, we will see victory together.' Sami Al-Arian was charged with conspiring to provide material support to the Palestinian Islamic Jihad, a U.S.-designated terrorist organization. He was convicted, served time in federal prison, and was deported to Turkey. There, he currently serves as a professor of public affairs and the director of the Center for Islam and Global Affairs (CIGA) at Sabahattin Zaim University in Istanbul. On May 6, 2024, he published an op-ed in support of the anti-Israel campus activism on the website of Turkey's state-run Anadolu Agency. The video of the call was initially uploaded to the CIGA's YouTube channel on May 2, 2024, but was removed shortly afterward. It reappeared on November 14, 2024, on the YouTube channel of the Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) University of Chicago chapter.
