US sanctions threat hangs over Iraq's Al-Rafidain Bank
Shafaq News/ Iraq's state-owned Al-Rafidain Bank faces the risk of US Treasury sanctions if it fails to address regulatory concerns, Iraqi lawmaker Ikhlas Al-Dulaimi warned on Saturday. Al-Dulaimi, deputy head of the parliamentary finance committee, told Shafaq News that Al-Rafidain operates under US Treasury regulations through agreements with Iraq's central bank and an international firm overseeing the financial sector. She said the firm had flagged violations in the bank's operations, prompting a contract with a foreign company to enhance compliance. "Failure to correct these infractions could result in US sanctions, affecting Al-Rafidain and other private banks," she cautioned. On January 30, 2025, US Republican Congressman Joe Wilson accused the bank of facilitating money laundering for Iran and its allies. In a post on X, he wrote, " Under Biden and McGurk, the US treasury and Federal Reserve allowed Rafidain Bank, the largest in Iraq, to become the money laundering machine for the Iranian regime and its puppets to obtain US$. This bank must be sanctioned." The US has since imposed sanctions on several Iraqi banks and is moving to restrict the use of electronic payment cards abroad. Experts warn that such measures could deepen Iraq's dollar shortage, drive up exchange rates, and further isolate the country from the global financial system. A worst-case scenario, they say, would see widespread disruptions affecting salary payments and key development projects.

Al-Anbar's former Governor included in Amnesty Law
Shafaq News/ A document issued by the Central Anti-Corruption Criminal Court has revealed that former Anbar Governor Ali Farhan Al-Dulaimi is included in Iraq's General Amnesty Law. The document stated that Al-Dulaimi, along with four other individuals, will not be released until it is confirmed that they are not wanted in other legal cases. Al-Dulaimi, who was sentenced to one year in prison in July 2024 for appointing advisors in violation of regulations, is among those covered by the recent developments. A few days ago, Iraq's Supreme Judicial Council directed the prison department to implement "immediate release" for individuals under the general amnesty law without requiring the finalization of the decision. The Iraqi Parliament had passed several controversial laws on January 21, including amendments to the General Amnesty Law, the Personal Status Law, and the Restitution Law.

Iraq intensifies anti-drug trafficking efforts
Shafaq News/ Iraqi security forces have successfully shut down a major smuggling route along the Syrian border, a local official announced on Thursday. "This achievement is the result of intensive efforts to strengthen security measures and establish full control over the border," said Imad al-Dulaimi, the district administrator of Ar-Rutbah city, speaking to Shafaq News. "The security belts are now stronger and more organized to protect the area from various threats," he added. Al-Dulaimi explained that the closure is part of a broader strategy to ensure long-term stability and security in the district and surrounding areas. The announcement came just one day after the Interior Ministry 's General Directorate for Drug and Psychotropic Substances revealed the issuance of international arrest warrants for several drug traffickers. "We have implemented advanced techniques that allow us to apprehend suspects within 24 hours," said Directorate spokesperson Hussein al-Tamimi. "This year will be particularly tough for drug traffickers." These efforts align with Iraq's ongoing commitment to combating drug trafficking. Al-Tamimi noted that the ministry has intensified collaboration with Arab and foreign countries through formal agreements and memoranda of understanding, resulting in the successful extradition of multiple suspects wanted by Iraqi courts. On Tuesday, Iraqi authorities seized more than 200 kilograms of Captagon pills and dismantled a drug trafficking network operating across Nineveh and Kirkuk. The operation, carried out in coordination with the Iraqi National Intelligence Service and the Kurdistan Region's Anti-Narcotics Directorate in Erbil, led also to the arrest of three suspected traffickers.
