6.1-magnitude earthquake strikes Greek island of Crete

Athens - (Saba): A 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck off the Greek islands of Crete and Santorini on Thursday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The "Al-Maalouma" website reported that the earthquake occurred at 6:19 a.m. (03:19 GMT), 82 kilometers northeast of Heraklion, the capital of Crete, and at a depth of 68 kilometers. The island of Santorini, located in the Aegean Sea and a major tourist destination in the country, experienced exceptional seismic activity in January and February, experiencing thousands of earthquakes, forcing some residents to flee. Greece is located on several geological fault lines in the southeastern Mediterranean and therefore experiences intense seismic activity. The last deadly earthquake in Greece occurred in October 2020, when it struck the island of Samos, located in the Aegean Sea between Greece and Turkey. That earthquake measured 7.0 on the Richter scale and killed two people on the island of Samos and more than 100 in the Turkish coastal city of Izmir. Whatsapp Telegram Email Print
