Kuwait Club clinches 58th Premier Handball League title, Burgan secures historic second

KUWAIT CITY, May 29: The Kuwait Club handball team secured the title of the 58th Premier Handball League after a commanding 39-28 victory over Sulaibikhat in the first round of the league's third and final stage. This triumph marked the club's 15th overall league title and 13th consecutive championship, sealing the title with four rounds remaining and bringing their total to 48 points. Meanwhile, Burgan made history by finishing second in the league for the first time, following a 32-28 win over Al-Salmiya. With 39 points, Burgan stands eight points clear of third-place Kazma. Even if Kazma wins its remaining four matches and Burgan loses all of theirs, both would be tied on points, but Burgan would maintain the edge based on head-to-head performance. The battle for third place continues, with Kazma (31 points) and Al-Salmiya (23 points) contending for the podium. Reacting to the historic achievement, Burgan Sports Club Chairman Anwar Al-Otaibi praised the club's progress, saying: 'This milestone didn't happen overnight. It is the result of the tremendous support from the club's board of directors, combined with the efforts of our technical, administrative, and medical staff, as well as the commitment of our players.' Al-Otaibi also confirmed that Burgan will participate in the Asian Club Championship this November, marking the team's first continental appearance. He expressed optimism, noting that the team will compete with four Asian professionals and is aiming for a strong showing.

Hosting Stockholm Regional Centre enhances Kuwait's environmental leadership: KISR

KUWAIT CITY, May 25: The Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research (KISR) affirmed on Saturday that hosting the Stockholm Convention Regional Centre for Training and Technology Transfer for West Asia underscores Kuwait's leading role in advancing global environmental initiatives and solidifies its status as a key regional hub for chemical and waste risk management. Dr. Mohammad Al-Otaibi, Coordinator of the Regional Centre and a scientific researcher at KISR, told KUNA that the center provides technical and training services to countries across West Asia. It serves as a vital link between three major environmental agreements—most notably the Stockholm Convention—and the member states, offering technical support, technology transfer, regular updates, and assistance in implementing national action plans and submitting periodic reports. Since its inception, the center has conducted numerous regional training workshops, Al-Otaibi noted. It is now preparing to host an expanded workshop in October 2025 at KISR's headquarters. The event will bring together participants from Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, other West Asian nations, and international experts to address recent updates to the convention, including chemicals such as PFAS, UVA-328, and PCBs, as well as the latest testing and reporting mechanisms. He highlighted that the center recently completed an updated national survey of banned chemicals in Kuwait in coordination with relevant agencies, including the Environment Public Authority, which fully supported the effort. A comprehensive report was submitted to the Stockholm Convention Secretariat. The center is now working on a new inventory of newly added substances to be submitted according to the required timeline. Al-Otaibi outlined the center's strategic work plan for 2024–2027, which is built around eight key areas: organizing advanced training workshops, implementing national research projects, updating national implementation plans (NIP), building a regional chemical database, evaluating new chemicals, and facilitating regional coordination and periodic reporting. He stressed that collaboration with donors and international organizations — such as the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) — has strengthened the center's capabilities. These partnerships help facilitate technology transfer, expand regional influence, and enhance Kuwait's environmental commitments while creating valuable opportunities for national capacity-building. Al-Otaibi also emphasized the importance of KISR's participation in the recent Conferences of the Parties to the Basel, Rotterdam, and Stockholm Conventions, held in Geneva from April 28 to May 9, 2025. Kuwait's involvement, he said, showcased the country's environmental efforts and contributed to key decisions, including the addition of new chemicals to the conventions, updates to technical guidelines, and the launch of joint environmental compliance programs. He added that the regional center provides strategic value for Kuwait, not only as a scientific and training hub but also as an essential mechanism for protecting public health and the environment. The center's success, he noted, has been made possible by the support of the Kuwaiti leadership and collaboration with national partners. Additionally, Al-Otaibi said the center plays a critical role in developing national human resources, proposing scientifically validated alternatives to banned substances, and reducing environmental pollution costs—ultimately supporting Kuwait's economy and promoting sustainable development. Kuwait ratified the Stockholm Convention in March 2006. In May 2009, during the Fourth Conference of the Parties in Geneva, KISR was officially approved as the Regional Centre for Training and Technology Transfer for West Asia, making it the first internationally accredited Arab center of its kind. Since its formal launch in 2011, the center has served as a scientific and technical cornerstone for advancing environmental policy and fostering coordinated regional efforts.

Taiba Investments Profits Soar 37% For Q1 of 2025

Taiba Investments, the leading hospitality company in Saudi Arabia, posted SAR 131.3 million of profits during the first quarter of 2025, up 37% compared to the same period last year, a rise driven by increased revenues from the company's hotel and residential sectors, according to a statement on the Saudi Stock Exchange (Tadawul) website. The company's net profits for the first quarter of this year increased by 36.6% year-on-year to SAR 131.3 million, compared to SAR 96.1 million during the first quarter of 2024, the statement said. During the first quarter of 2025, Taiba Investments posted operating revenues of SAR 357.8 million, an increase of SAR 25.7 million or 7.7% compared to SAR 332.1 million of the same quarter of 2024. This growth is primarily attributable to higher revenues from the company's hospitality and residential sectors, driven by improved occupancy rates and increased revenues from the company's properties in both Makkah and Madinah due to the rise in the number of visitors and Umrah pilgrims, as well as the seasonality of operations. Earnings per share jumped 36.6% during the first quarter of this year to 0.50 riyals, compared to 0.37 riyals during the same period last year. On a quarterly basis, Taiba Investments' revenues for the first quarter of 2025 increased by SAR 20.5 million, or 6.1%, compared to the last quarter of 2024. This increase is attributable to higher revenues from the company's properties, supported by the seasonal nature of operations. Meanwhile, the company's net profit jumped 45.7% during the first quarter of this year, an increase of SAR 41.2 million compared to the fourth quarter of 2024, due to the increase in revenues. Sultan Badr Al-Otaibi, CEO of Taiba Investments, commented: 'The increase in Taiba Investments' profits during the first quarter of 2025 comes in light of the significant development of the tourism sector in the Kingdom and the enablers and support provided by the Saudi government within the goals of Saudi Vision 2030.' 'This development has positively impacted the hospitality sector and led to a clear improvement in the sector's revenues,' Al-Otaibi stressed. 'The financial statements for the first quarter of this year demonstrate the strong returns of the company's investment in providing a comprehensive and upscale accommodation experience, meeting the highest international standards, for pilgrims and Umrah performers, reflecting the authenticity of Saudi hospitality and enhancing the spiritual experience for visitors to Makkah and Madinah.', Al-Otaibi added. Taiba Investments has a portfolio of approximately 40 properties, including hotels, residential communities, and commercial plazas. Taiba manages over 7,700 keys and has an additional 8 properties in development, in addition to partnerships with global hotel brands such as Marriott International, Sheraton, Crowne Plaza, and Holiday Inn.
