Libya's PM & Attorney General Discuss Urgent Action in Al-Drisi Abduction Case

On Monday, Libya's Attorney General, Al-Siddiq Al-Sour, traveled to Benghazi to lead an urgent investigation into the disappearance of Member of Parliament Ibrahim Al-Drisi, whose sudden disappearance has ignited public outrage and political concern across the country. Al-Sour, accompanied by members of his office, met with Prime Minister Osama Hammad of the eastern-based government to coordinate the investigation's launch. The move comes in response to growing pressure from both the public and the House of Representatives, which has formally tasked the Attorney General and security agencies with uncovering the truth behind the MP's fate. Al-Drisi had not been seen since his reported abduction until images and videos surfaced showing a man resembling him shackled in a cell, with chains around his neck. These shocking visuals triggered a wave of anger across Libya. However, several Libyan security officials have questioned the authenticity of the footage, suggesting it may have been generated or altered using artificial intelligence. Despite doubts about the footage, the calls for transparency have only grown louder. The Attorney General's presence in Benghazi signals a commitment to addressing the case seriously amid a wider national concern over political kidnappings and impunity. Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar, commander of the Libyan National Army (LNA), issued direct orders to all relevant authorities to cooperate fully with the Attorney General's team. According to a statement from the LNA's media division, Haftar emphasized the need to facilitate the investigation and support efforts to uncover the truth. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Abdulhamid Dbaiba of the rival Government of National Unity in Tripoli condemned the abduction, describing it as a politically motivated crime targeting elected representatives. He drew a parallel with the still unresolved 2019 abduction of MP Siham Sergiwa, calling for urgent accountability. The growing pressure from lawmakers, families, and the public underscores the broader crisis of governance and the rule of law in Libya, where elected officials remain vulnerable to politically driven disappearances. Iraqi Cancer Drug Scandal: Top Libyan health officials jailed

Shafaq News/ Libya's Public Prosecution on Wednesday ordered the detention of the country's health minister and several senior officials over irregularities in the import of cancer medication from Iraq. In a statement, the Attorney General's Office revealed that in addition to the minister, the detainees include the pharmacy department director, the chair of the general tenders committee, a central procurement officer, and a representative of an importing company. 'Investigators uncovered that the drug was imported without legal and technical approvals or coordination with the National Anti-Cancer Authority,' it added. 'This constitutes a breach of public procurement rules.' The cancer drug scandal surfaced last week after Iraq's Ministry of Health announced it had delivered the first locally produced shipment of cancer drugs to Libya. However, Libya's National Anti-Cancer Authority—the only body authorized to approve such treatments—denied receiving any shipments from Iraq or any other Arab or Asian country. In response, Libya's Attorney General Al-Siddiq Al-Sour affirmed that the Public Prosecution will take all necessary legal measures against those involved in the violations.

Libya probes Iraqi drug deal: Cancer medication controversy grows

Shafaq News/ Libya's Attorney General, Counselor Al-Siddiq Al-Sour, affirmed on Monday that the Public Prosecution is committed to taking all necessary legal measures against those involved in violations related to the import of cancer medications from Iraq. In a meeting held in Tripoli with acting Minister of Health Mohamed Al-Ghouj, Al-Sour stated that public lawsuits will be filed against any individuals who endanger public health or breach regulations governing the healthcare sector. Al-Ghouj, recently appointed to oversee the ministry, expressed full readiness to cooperate with the Attorney General's Office and all oversight bodies. He announced that concrete steps are already underway to reform the health system, regulate pharmaceutical procurement, and combat corruption. 'Our priority is to restore trust and ensure the efficient delivery of health services to Libyans,' Al-Ghouj said. The Libyan Ministry of Health previously issued a statement reassuring the public that cancer medications are imported through official state mechanisms and are subject to strict quality control and verification procedures aimed at ensuring the efficacy of active substances. However, recent investigations have uncovered procurement activities conducted outside the remit of the National Authority for Cancer Control, raising legal and ethical concerns. Last week, Prime Minister Abdulhamid Dbeibah of Libya's interim Government of National Unity dismissed Deputy Prime Minister Ramadan Abu Janah from his position overseeing the Health Ministry. Abu Janah and several ministry officials were referred for investigation following reports of irregular imports and administrative violations.
