Rece Davis makes bold prediction about one SEC team

We are only weeks away from the kickoff of the new college football season and with that comes plenty of predictions. One team that has many people talking is the Alabama Crimson Tide and how they will fair year two under head coach Kalen DeBoer. The Tide struggled at times last year, but College Game Day host Rece Davis seems to think the Tide is in for a big year, especially if the play of one particular position falls into place. Speaking with colleague Pete Thamel on the College Game Day Podcast, Davis said he thinks Florida State will be better than they were last year; however, he believes Alabama could be a national championship contender if they receive good play at the QB position. 'We will also learn that Alabama is really, really good, really, really good,' Davis said. 'If they get good quarterback play, and I I don't just mean adequate. If they get good quarterback play, presumably from Ty Simpson or whether it's eventually Austin Mack or Keelon Russell, the freshman. If they get good high-level quarterback play, they might win the National Championship. I'm a believer in the defense by the way. If they don't, it's probably a season like last year, three or four losses.' Inconsistent quarterback play from Jalen Milroe is the main reason the Tide couldn't seem to get it going last season. When Milroe was on, like he was in the LSU and Georgia games, he looked like a Heisman candidate. But when he was off, as he was in the Vanderbilt and Oklahoma games, he looked average and seemed to revert to his old playing ways like in the beginning of the 2023 season. Consistent quarterback play may be the difference between a national championship or another appearance in an unknown New Year's Day bowl game, which will be considered another disappointing season by Alabama fans.

Florida State, Alabama War of Words Continues: 'Disrespect Will be Addressed'

Print Close Published July 17, 2025 The Alabama Crimson Tide travel to Tallahassee to play the Florida State Seminoles on Aug. 30, in one of the headline games in Week 1 of the 2025 college football season — and there has been plenty of chirping from Florida State's starting quarterback. Speaking about Alabama earlier this offseason, Florida State quarterback Thomas Castellanos said he couldn't see the Crimson Tide "stopping" him and that "they don't have Nick Saban to save them" — not to be mistaken with Prospector telling Woody "that silly Buzz Lightweight can't help you" in "Toy Story 2"; Saban retired following the 2023 season after 17 years at the helm and winning six national titles at Alabama. A video surfaced earlier this week of Castellanos saying that he "just wanted to instill some confidence" in his team. Nevertheless, Alabama defensive lineman Tim Keenan III had a direct response when asked about Castellanos. "Disrespect will be addressed," Keenan said at SEC Media Days on Wednesday, according to Last season, Keenan, who stands at 6-foot-2 and 335 pounds, totaled 2.5 sacks, eight tackles for loss and 40 combined tackles. Keenan is entering his redshirt senior season at Alabama, with whom he has spent his entire collegiate career (2022-present) and started the past two seasons. As for Castellanos, the senior quarterback transferred to Florida State after two seasons at Boston College (2023-24) and one season at UCF (2022). Last season, Castellanos totaled 1,366 passing yards, 18 passing touchdowns, five interceptions and a 163.4 passer rating, while completing 61.5% of his passes in eight games. The year prior (2023), he posted a 121.0 passer rating, completed 57.3% of his passes but also rushed for 1,113 yards and 13 touchdowns. Both Alabama and Florida State are coming off underwhelming seasons but in vastly different contexts. Alabama went 9-4 (5-3 in SEC play), the most losses it has recorded in a single season since going 7-6 in 2007 in what was Saban's first season as Alabama's head coach, in what was Kalen DeBoer's first season as head coach. Meanwhile, Florida State, which went 13-1 in 2023 and had many clamoring for its inclusion in the College Football Playoff after going 13-0 before bowl season, finished the 2024 season at 2-10 (ACC-worst 1-7 in conference play). It was the Seminoles' lowest win total since winning just one game in the 1974 season. This will be just the sixth time that the Crimson Tide and Seminoles face off, with Alabama winning the last matchup between the two teams in 2017, 24-7, in what was a neutral site game at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, GA. Each of their last two matchups came at a neutral site, with the upcoming Week 1 matchup being the first time that they'll play on a college campus since 1974 and the first time Florida State will host Alabama. The Crimson Tide are 3-1-1 in the all-time head-to-head matchup. Want great stories delivered right to your inbox? Alabama HC Kalen DeBoer: If We Played 'Today,' Ty Simpson Would Be Starting QB

While there were indications of who would be Alabama's starting quarterback for the 2025 college football season, head coach Kalen DeBoer painted a clearer picture of who that will be on Wednesday: Ty Simpson. "If we played today, he [Simpson] would be our starter," DeBoer said in an appearance on SEC Network at SEC Media Days on Wednesday. "We announced that kind of after the spring. Nothing's really changed since then. He's done a great job of continuing to grow himself. That's under the tutelage of [offensive coordinator] Ryan Grubb, [quarterbacks coach] Nick Sheridan. Those guys are just pouring it all into not just Ty, but our whole quarterback room. I'm excited about the growth of Ty. I think trying to make sure that a guy gets out there and doesn't feel like he's got to be all-world even though we want our quarterback to be more than just a guy that just distributes the ball. We need him to go out and make plays. He'll grow into that. He doesn't need to prove that and try to do too much. "Trust the guys around him, trust his offensive line, trust the receiving core that I think is improved, as well. Their relationships are important and their continuity. They're operating on a different level now than what they were a year ago, for sure." Simpson is entering his fourth season at Alabama, primarily serving as a backup quarterback from 2022-24. The 22-year-old signal-caller was a five-star recruit who committed to play for Alabama in 2021. After 2021 Heisman Trophy winner Bryce Young left for the NFL following the 2022 season, Simpson lost an offseason quarterback competition to eventual two-year starter Jalen Milroe, who was the Crimson Tide's primary quarterback from 2023-24. Simpson, a redshirt junior, has appeared in 16 career games but has only thrown 50 combined passes. With Milroe being selected by the Seattle Seahawks with the No. 92 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, the starting job is Simpson's for the taking next season. Elsewhere in Alabama's quarterback room are senior Cade Carruth, redshirt sophomore Austin Mack, sophomore John Cooper and freshmen Keelon Russell and John Gazzaniga. Carruth and Russell were five-star recruits. The Crimson Tide are entering their second season with DeBoer, who previously went a combined 25-3 at Washington, as head coach, as he replaced Nick Saban following the seven-time national champion head coach's retirement. Last season, Alabama went 9-4 (5-3 in SEC play), missed the College Football Playoff and lost to Michigan in the ReliaQuest Bowl. Alabama opens the 2025 season on the road against Florida State on Aug. 30. Want great stories delivered right to your inbox? Top Alabama transfer portal addition reportedly signs with MLB team

According to a recent report, one of the Alabama Crimson Tide's top baseball offseason transfer portal additions might not be making it to Tuscaloosa after all. That transfer portal addition is right-handed pitcher Matthew Tippie, who, according to a report from D1Baseball's Kendall Rogers, has signed with the New York Yankees. Tippie was not selected during the 2025 MLB draft, signing with New York as an undrafted free agent. A player who recently spent the 2025 season at Texas State, Tippie had previously announced earlier this offseason that he was transferring to Alabama for the 2026 campaign, but will now begin his professional career. Alabama also saw four players selected in the 2025 MLB draft this past week, the first of which was Riley Quick on Sunday night. Alabama football 2025 season preview, predictions: Kaleb Edwards

A player who is new to the program this season, there are few Alabama Crimson Tide tight ends more intriguing than Kaleb Edwards. Coming to Tuscaloosa as a member of Alabama's 2025 recruiting class, Edwards will be the next player to wear the No. 81 jersey for the Crimson Tide, the same number worn by tight end CJ Dippre over the last two seasons. Now entering his true freshman season as well, could Edwards potentially end up having a similar impact to Dippre, even in year one? Let's take a look at everything you need to know about new Alabama tight end Kaleb Edwards entering the 2025 season. Kaleb Edwards player information Kaleb Edwards career stats A new face to college football, this will be Edwards' first season at the collegiate level. Edwards will be a true freshman this fall. Kaleb Edwards 2024 stats While this will be the first season for Edwards in college, the freshman tight end is however coming off a strong 2024 campaign at the prep level where he attended Oak Ridge High School in California. On offense, Edwards hauled in 44 receptions for 729 yards and nine touchdowns across 13 games, while also compiling 66 tackles defensively with 13.5 TFL and 8.5 sacks. Kaleb Edwards recruiting ranking According to the 247Sports Composite recruiting rankings, Edwards was considered as the nation's No. 163 overall prospect in the 2025 class, as well as the No. 8 tight end nationally. A four-star prospect, Edwards announced that he was committed to Alabama back in July 2024, and was also ranked as the No. 14 player in the state of California where he attended Oak Ridge High School. Kaleb Edwards 2025 season outlook Tasked with replacing a pair of starters in the aforementioned Dippre, as well as Robbie Ouzts, there is certainly a chance for multiple names to emerge at tight end for Alabama this fall. In that conversation, the leading name is likely that of Josh Cuevas, but when looking for other options to emerge, it's likely that Edwards comes up in some form. The freshman is one of Alabama's more talented tight ends from a physical standpoint, and can make an impact through both phases at the position as a pass catcher and blocker. Overall, expect Edwards to see some playing time in 2025, and for the true freshman to emerge into a larger role as the season goes along.
