Dothan Schools considered failing in English proficiency despite slight increase
DOTHAN, Ala (WDHN) — Dothan City Schools, along with the rest of the Wiregrass, is still in the red for English learning despite a slight increase over the past three years, recent state data shows.
According to the Alabama State Report Card, Dothan City Schools scored nearly 45% out of 100 in progress in English language proficiency for the 2023-24 school year.
Despite being a low score, this is nearly an 8% increase from the 2020-21 school year, when DCS scored 37%.
Of all the school systems in the Wiregrass that were scored in progress in English language proficiency, Dothan City Schools was the second highest, only behind Geneva County Schools at 59.46%.
Dale County Schools scored 31.58%, and Enterprise City Schools, the second largest school system in the Wiregrass by number of students, scored 42% out of 100.
The state average score in English language proficiency for the 2023-24 school year came out to be 41.39%.
