Albany Technical College students excel at state Skills/USA competition

ALBANY — Fifteen Albany Technical College students collected nine medals, including three golds, at the SkillsUSA Georgia Post-Secondary state competition, held last week in Atlanta. Albany Tech students Waylon Anderson, Tommy Stewart and T'yanah Henry won gold medals in the statewide competition and will represent ATC at the National SkillsUSA Championships in Atlanta June 23-27. 'ATC stands united in celebrating our students' achievements,' Albany Tech President Emmett Griswold said. 'Their performance at SkillsUSA reflects the high level of skill and dedication that our college fosters. We anticipate an outstanding showing at Nationals and look forward to our students continuing to uphold ATC's standard of excellence.' Anderson earned his gold medal in Firefighting, Stewart in Masonry and Henry in Practical Nursing. Albany Tech students earning silver medals included Cody Humphrey in Firefighting; Wesley Alexander, James Green, Keimon Jefferson and Johnnie Owens in TeamWorks; Khalilah Lindsay in Early Childhood Education; Kerpasha Fletcher-Davis in Customer Service, and Ashley Pittman in Practical Nursing. Bronze medalists were Morgan Wilson in Medical Assisting; and Aden Clanton, Pierce Dineen and Jackson Klein in Welding Fabrication. Under the guidance of ATC instructors and advisors, students competed in categories such as Welding, Welding Fabrication, Welding Sculpture, Nurse Assisting, Practical Nursing, Cosmetology, Medical Terminology, TeamWorks, Firefighting, Nail Care, Early Childhood Education, Medical Assisting, Customer Service, Masonry, Barbering and Restaurant Service. The gold medalists advance to national competition. 'We are incredibly proud of the 34 students who participated in this year's SkillsUSA State Conference,' Kenneth Williams, the director of athletics/student life at Albany Tech, said. 'Each student demonstrated outstanding skill and professionalism while representing Albany Tech. With three gold medalists moving on to Nationals, we look forward to seeing them showcase their abilities on the national stage.'
