'I'm honored to share this award with some of my role models, from Eleanor Roosevelt to Gloria Steinem to Meryl Streep,' Brown said during her speech. 'I'm just a nice Jewish girl from Chicago who decided to become a makeup artist. How? Why am I in this room? I'm not sure.' Brown also joked that she hopes 'to tell all the other creative kids that don't get good grades in math and science, there is hope….I'm very honored, especially for someone that got Ds in science to get this science award. It's pretty amazing, but it's really about all the amazing doctors and women that make a big difference.' Ahead of the event, Bush Lauren said: 'I'm very honored to be honored with Bobbi, who's an old friend of mine, and just from an amazing organization doing really important research and clinical care. It's a little surreal, to be honest.' Like Brown, Bush Lauren was humbled by the array of past honorees, which also include Donna Karan, Diane von Furstenberg, Evelyn Lauder and Iris Apfel. Bush Lauren added: '[It's] an honor in itself to be considered amongst those women. For me, I've just been held up and lifted up by so many women, obviously my mom, my family, my sister, my girlfriends and fellow female entrepreneurs have like been my little tribe during the last 20 years of building Feed. Without them and that support Feed certainly would not be here.' While Brown and Bush Lauren were honored for their successes, the focus throughout the event was on the scientific advancements coming out of the college, including Bowman's research on blood stem cells via zebrafish, which respond similarly to humans. Novel Shoes May Cut Low Back Pain, Delay Knee Arthroplasty
INCHEON, South Korea — A shoe-based biomechanical intervention worn for a short time each day may achieve greater improvements in low back pain and greater reductions in the risk for total knee replacement surgery than standard physical therapy, according to two studies presented at the World Congress on Osteoarthritis (OARSI) 2025 Annual Meeting. 'If you've ever watched somebody who has pain — whether it's knee pain, hip pain, back pain — they walk a little strange,' said presenter Matthew Bartels, MD, MPH, director of Rehabilitation Medicine and professor of physical medicine and rehabilitation at Montefiore Medical Center and Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City. But walking differently to compensate for pain can actually make the problem worse, directing the ground force through the affected area of the body, whether the knee or lower back. Bartels presented data from two studies of the US Food and Drug Administration–cleared shoe-based intervention, which 'alters the foot's pressure points to reduce loads, minimize symptoms, and promote neuromuscular control training using adjustable, convex pods under the sole,' according to the researchers. The first was a randomized controlled trial comparing the effects of the intervention and standard physical therapy on pain in 162 patients with low back pain. Participants were randomized in a 2:1 ratio either to the shoe-based intervention from AposHealth — which was individually tailored and calibrated six times over 1 year — or to standard physical therapy. In addition to being presented at OARSI, the trial was recently published in Global Spine Journal . At 1 year after randomization, those who used the shoe-based intervention reported a significantly greater mean 3.5-point reduction in their pain scores, as measured on a 10-point numeric rating scale, compared with a mean 1.8-point reduction in those who received physical therapy. The participants in the intervention also reported better secondary outcomes, including greater improvements in their Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System function scores, gait speed, and overall quality of life. Bartels told Medscape Medical News that the intervention was likely to have greater compliance than physical therapy because patients could use it at home for as little as 15 minutes at a time and feel the benefits pretty quickly. 'We all know that if you have knee or back pain, physical therapy will make you better, but the problem is, people don't keep the exercises up,' he said. 'This is a treatment that you put the shoes on, and you just wear them doing normal activities for a period, so it doesn't take time out of your day.' Bartels' own experience of his patients using the shoes was that even if patients did stop wearing them once their symptoms improved, they often started using them again if their symptoms returned, 'so they kind of self-dose,' he said. The second study Bartels presented was a poster detailing the results of a retrospective registry review of 95 patients with knee osteoarthritis (OA) who had been prescribed the shoe intervention after exhausting other nonsurgical options to see whether it was associated with a reduction in the likelihood of total knee replacement surgery. The study was also published last year in the Journal of Musculoskeletal Research . After an average follow-up time of 5.6 years, 12.6% of the patients using the shoe had undergone total knee replacement compared with 34.3% of a control group of patients from the same period who received traditional physical therapy. 'Increased use of biomechanical intervention to treat knee OA may help reduce some of the burden on healthcare and society associated with end-stage knee OA by delaying or avoiding surgery,' the researchers wrote. Commenting on the two studies, physical therapist and epidemiologist Garrett Bullock, PhD, DPT, of Wake Forest University School of Medicine, Winston-Salem, North Carolina, said, 'For a specific type of patient that has tried exercise interventions, has tried medication interventions, and a combination of both, that has a decent amount of physical activity, it may be something to explore, particularly to maintain neutral balance or create a better line through the foot.' Bullock told Medscape Medical News that there was always a risk that patients wouldn't adhere to physical therapy, so an intervention that provided education and the tools for self-efficacy could help them to manage their own symptoms.

Matter Bio Announces Landmark Collaboration to Decode Exceptional Longevity at Unprecedented Scale
Groundbreaking longevity research initiative brings together leading scientists and institutions to decode the genetic basis of extreme lifespan BROOKLYN, NEW YORK / ACCESS Newswire / April 23, 2025 / Matter Bio, a pioneering biotechnology company focused on extending healthspan through advanced genetic interventions, today announced the launch of a groundbreaking longevity research initiative that brings together leading scientists and institutions to decode the genetic basis of extreme lifespan. Leveraging multi-omics technologies - including genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, and metabolomics- and processing this unique dataset with cutting age AI analysis, the project will integrate data from human supercentenarians and exceptionally long-lived mammalian species, representing one of the most comprehensive efforts in aging science to date. A World-Class Alliance This collaborative network unites Matter Bio's research and development capabilities with premier scientists from top institutions dedicated to uncovering the foundations of healthy aging, including: George Church, Ph.D. (Harvard and MIT)Professor of Genetics at Harvard Medical SchoolNir Barzilai, M.D. (Albert Einstein College of Medicine)Director of the Institute for Aging ResearchJan Vijg, Ph.D. (Albert Einstein College of Medicine)Professor and Chairman of the Department of Gorbunova, Ph.D. (University of Rochester)Co-director of the Rochester Aging Research CenterYousin Suh, Ph.D. (Columbia University)Director of Reproductive Aging and Chaired ProfessorPaul Robbins, Ph.D. (University of Minnesota)Co-Director of the Institute on the Biology of Aging and Metabolism (iBAM)Laura Niedernhofer, M.D., Ph.D. (University of Minnesota)Co-Director of the Institute on the Biology of Aging and Metabolism (iBAM) Additional collaborators include experts affiliated with the American Federation for Aging Research (AFAR). Decades of research have shown a striking correlation: species with extended lifespans consistently exhibit superior genome stability, resulting not only in longer life, but also in drastically reduced rates of cancer and other age-related diseases. This project aims to build on those findings at an unprecedented scale. "At Matter Bio, we're determined to shift the paradigm from disease treatment to preventative health solutions that can significantly extend the healthy human lifespan," said Chris Bradley, M.S., CEO of Matter Bio. "This collaboration brings together extraordinary expertise to drive one of the most comprehensive efforts in longevity science ever undertaken." The consortium will analyze biological data from over 10,000 human centenarians, 20,000 members of their families and will compare these sequences against over 200,000 regular human genome sequences. This data will be analyzed alongside samples from a combination of more than 300 long-lived and short-lived animal species, including the Greenland Shark, thought to be capable of living over 400 years. Multiple tissues and sample types will be studied for each species, generating tens of thousands of data points for the largest comparative analysis of its kind. By systematically comparing long-lived organisms to shorter-lived controls, the research team aims to identify key pro-longevity genes and molecular pathways. These findings will serve as a powerful foundation for developing targeted therapeutics and interventions to extend healthspan and combat age-related diseases. "By uniting large-scale genomic data, powerful computational tools, and advanced gene delivery platforms, we have a rare opportunity to intervene in aging processes in ways never before possible," said Harvard geneticist and co-founder of Matter Bio, Dr. George Church. The initiative also benefits from the expertise of pioneers in aging research. Nir Barzilai, M.D., of Albert Einstein College of Medicine, noted, "Centenarians have a longer health-span and a compression of morbidity rooted in their genetics that slows their aging. Several drugs have been developed in part from data collected from the initial studies (Merck and Ionis). This is an ongoing project, and the team has been working together to prove the concept for this accelerated phase." Jan Vijg, Ph.D., also of Albert Einstein College of Medicine, added, "Pinpointing the genetic signatures that drive longevity is one of the greatest challenges in modern science. Working with Matter Bio to conduct comprehensive multi-omics analysis brings us closer than ever to unraveling these complexities." "Joining forces with Matter Bio will help transition fundamental discoveries in aging research into real-world gene therapies," said Vera Gorbunova, Ph.D., of the University of Rochester. "I'm excited about the potential to address the root causes of aging rather than simply tackling diseases after they occur." This ambitious initiative represents a major leap forward in actionable longevity science - with the potential to reshape the future of medicine and public health for generations to come. About Matter Bio Matter Bio is a biotechnology company at the forefront of longevity science, committed to extending human healthspan by enhancing genomic resilience and unlocking the genetic keys to healthy aging. Our platform harnesses naturally occurring DNA stability variants and delivers them to human cells to dramatically enhance cellular longevity. When cancer is already present, Matter is delivering engineered bacteria to find and kill tumor cells and these efforts are now entering human clinical trials. Through partnerships with leading scientists and institutions, Matter Bio is laying the groundwork for the next generation of preventive healthcare solutions. New ‘Diabetes type 5' discovered by scientists who say it's ‘vastly undiagnosed' – do you have the signs?
A NEW form of diabetes linked to malnutrition, not obesity, has been officially recognised. Named Type 5 diabetes, the disease is estimated to affect 25million people worldwide. It mainly strikes malnourished, lean teens and young adults in low and middle-income countries. The International Diabetes Federation (IDF) voted to classify the condition previously known as Maturity Onset Diabetes of the Young (MODY) at its World Diabetes Congress in Bangkok on April 8th. 'It has historically been vastly underdiagnosed and poorly understood,' said Professor Meredith Hawkins of Albert Einstein College of Medicine, said. 'The IDF's recognition of it as 'Type 5 diabetes' is an important step toward raising awareness of a health problem that is so devastating to so many people," she added. Globally, around 830 million adults are living with diabetes, mostly Type 1 and Type 2, according to a 2022 study. Both types affect the body's ability to control blood sugar levels. In Type 1 diabetes, the body can't produce insulin - a hormone that helps move sugar from the blood into cells for energy. This causes high blood sugar, which can damage organs. In Type 2 diabetes, the body still makes insulin but becomes resistant to it, so sugar stays in the blood instead of entering the cells. Over time, this also leads to high blood sugar levels. Type 5 diabetes is different. It's caused by malnutrition, which leads to low insulin production. The leaves the body unable to make enough insulin to manage blood sugar properly. It's not due to a total lack of insulin like Type 1, or insulin resistance like Type 2 - rather the body doesn't produce enough, often because of poor nutrition. 40 Day Health Challenge GP Dr Sumi Dunne on signs and symptoms of diabetes to watch out for Unlike Types 1 and 2, Type 5 is also usually inherited. If a parent carries the gene, their child has a 50 per cent chance of developing it, as the gene makes them more vulnerable to the condition. Type 5 diabetes typically appears in early teens or 20s, especially in young men in Asia and Africa with a body mass index (BMI) of 19. A healthy BMI is between 18 and 24.9, suggesting that those with Type 5 diabetes tend to be on the thinner side of healthy. Professor Nihal Thomas, of Christian Medical College in India, told The Indian Express: 'The disease causes pancreatic beta cells to function abnormally, which leads to insufficient production of insulin. "Due to the lack of formal recognition, this condition has been understudied and misdiagnosed.' Doctors often mistake it for Type 1 diabetes - but giving insulin can be dangerous, Prof Hawkins told Medscape Medical News. 'Malnutrition-related diabetes is more common than tuberculosis and nearly as common as HIV/AIDS,' Prof Hawkins said. 'But the lack of an official name has hindered efforts to diagnose patients or find effective therapies.' She first heard about the condition in 2005 when doctors from several countries described a strange form of diabetes. "The patients were young and thin, which suggested that they had Type 1 diabetes, which can be managed with insulin injections to regulate blood sugar levels. "But insulin didn't help these patients and in some cases caused dangerously low blood sugar," she said, according to Medical Express. The patients did not seem to have Type 2 diabetes either, as it is typically associated with obesity, which the doctor said "was very confusing." In 2010, Prof Hawkins founded Einstein's Global Diabetes Institute. More than a decade later in 2022, Prof Hawkins and her colleagues at the Christian Medical College demonstrated that this form of diabetes was fundamentally different from Type 1 and 2. She said people with Type 5 diabetes have a profound defect in the capacity to secrete insulin which wasn't recognised before. This means their bodies can't properly absorb and store nutrients, especially sugar and fat to put on any weight, or store muscle. As a result, they often stay very thin, even if they're eating enough. 'This finding has revolutionised how we think about this condition and how we should treat it," she said. But there's still no standard treatment, with many patients dying within a year of diagnosis. Prof Hawkins said diets high in protein and low in carbohydrates, along with targeted micronutrients, may help. But she warned: 'This needs to be carefully studied now that there is global will and an official mandate from [IDF] to do so.'
