Spring snowstorm brings school and highway closures to southern Manitoba

Social Sharing Blowing and drifting snow, as well as poor visibility, has caused several schools and parts of highways across southern Manitoba to be closed. The region had an abrupt return to winter on Thursday afternoon, as an Alberta Clipper moved into the western part of the province and spread across it through the day. A snowfall warning from Environment Canada remains in place as 15 to 25 centimetres is still expected in some areas on Friday. The snow will be heavy at times before tapering off through the morning hours, according to the weather agency. As a result of the conditions, all schools are closed for the day in the following divisions: Lakeshore. Lord Selkirk. Sunrise. Colony schools are closed in the Rolling River School Division but all community schools are open. The Franco-Manitoban School Division has two school closures — École Jours de Plaine in Laurier and L'École Aurèle Lemoine in St. Laurent. Bus service is cancelled for École Saint-Lazare and École Saint-Georges but the schools are open for classes. The highway closures mostly impact the western area of the province but many others across the entire south, including the Trans-Canada Highway and the Perimeter Highway surrounding Winnipeg, are partly-covered.

Arctic Blast Sunday: Prepare for wicked wind chills

An Alberta Clipper will exit by Saturday night with a riled up northwest breeze barreling in behind it. That northwest wind will deliver an immense amount of colder, drier air but that same wind will also stir up some dangerous wind chills. Check out these Sunday wind chills and make sure you're layering up appropriately to wrap up the weekend. Sunday morning, northwest winds will be gustiest as our low pressure system will be pushing off shore. As it moves away and northwest winds gust up to 30 mph, wind chills will land in the teens and 20s below zero. It's not out of the question that communities in the northern Adirondacks, Greens, and Whites could near 30 below by sunrise Sunday. Sunday afternoon, highs will manage the lower to middle teens. Winds will gradually relax by late in the day but the slightest bit of a breeze will still result in brutal afternoon wind chills. It will feel more like the single digits and teens below zero for the second half of Sunday. Temperatures will moderate Monday before entering into a massive warmup by midweek. Storm Center PM Update: Slightly Warmer for the Weekend

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — It was a bitter cold start to the day in KELOLAND, with many temperatures in the -20s as a high pressure system was over the region. Luckily, the light wind has kept it not feeling too much colder than it is. After plenty of sunshine today, cloud cover will start to move in going into the evening ahead of a warm front. It will not be near as cold tonight as southerly winds will help bring in warmer air and keep most our lows above zero. Our warmest temperatures of the week will arrive tomorrow, with highs ranging from the 20s to the 40s. With breezier conditions setting in, blowing snow could be likely throughout the day with stronger gusts. As the low pressure system moves southeast, snow chances will increase in Eastern KELOLAND. Light snow showers and flurries are possible with accumulations looking to stay around to under an inch. It will be quiet for the rest of the weekend, with highs dropping into the single digits for the start of the week. It won't be long before snow chances make an appearance in the forecast again as an Alberta Clipper will moves into the region on Monday. Western South Dakota to southeast KELOLAND will have the best chance at seeing snow. After the snow moves out, the cold temperatures will continue for the rest of the week. With lows dipping to well below zero, more cold weather alerts could be possible. We won't see much warmer temperatures until the end of February, with highs looking to get back to near and above average. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Slowly warming but still below average

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) – Very cold this morning with temperatures in the teens and 20s below zero. EXTREME COLD WARNINGS and COLD WEATHER ADVISORIES are also in effect for much of KELOLAND through the morning. Wind chills will be in the minus 20s, minus 30s, and minus 40s for the morning. The minus 40 wind chills will be in the Extreme Cold Warning in northern South Dakota. It will be slightly warmer today, but temperatures will still be below average. Highs will range from the lower 30s in western South Dakota to the teens in eastern KELOLAND. Winds will be light from a southerly direction. Tomorrow will bring a warm front to eastern KELOLAND. This front will help not only bring in warmer temperatures, but act as a focal point for snow development in eastern KELOLAND late Friday into Saturday. The rest of the weekend will be dry and cold with highs in the single digits and teens. An Alberta Clipper will move through the upper plains on Monday. This can yield another chance for snow across KELOLAND, mainly in western to southeast South Dakota. Along with the snow, temperatures will remain cold as winds will be stronger. The cold air will last through next week with slightly warmer air returning by NEXT weekend. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Storm Center PM Update: More Snow Chances and Bitter Cold

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — Light snow has been falling in southeastern KELOLAND today with Sioux Falls receiving half an inch before noon. These snow showers will continue to taper off and move southeast going into the evening. The bitter cold sticks around going into tonight with skies beginning to clear and lows dropping into the negative teens and 20s. Although winds are going to be light, the wind chill values will be dangerously cold ranging from the -40s for those in the Extreme Cold Warning to -20s and -30s in the Cold Weather Advisory. You will want to throw on extra layers as you head out the door in the morning. Sunshine will return tomorrow with highs staying in the teens to the east and becoming more seasonable the further west you go. The wind will continue to stay on the lighter side and turn to the south. The southerly wind will help us going into Friday and we will warm up, but still continue to stay below average in the 20s. A warm front pushing into eastern KELOLAND will bring increased snow chances Friday evening into Saturday morning, with winds becoming breezy from the south at 15-25 mph. We dry out again for the rest of the weekend before another chance for snow on Monday as an Alberta Clipper moves in. After the snow, a cold week will be ahead with highs staying in the single digits. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
