Report: The Latest On Alberto Del Rio's WWE Status
What is the latest on Alberto Del Rio and WWE following the acquisition of AAA last month? When WWE announced last month during WrestleMania 41 weekend that it had acquired the Mexican wrestling promotion AAA, all eyes shifted to current AAA Mega Champion Alberto El Patron (Alberto Del Rio), who the company has had less than a positive relationship with in recent years. So much so, it was reported multiple times that WWE had no interest in working with Del Rio ever again. Advertisement Despite that, rumors persisted following the acquisition that Del Rio had signed a deal with WWE to remain with AAA. But we still don't know if that's entirely accurate. In an update on the situation from Fightful's Sean Ross Sapp (via Fightful Select), one source has informed him that 'it's hard to believe that it's an accident or coincidence' that Alberto is currently scheduled to defend the AAA Mega Championship against El Hijo del Vikingo one week before WWE and AAA's Worlds Collide event. With another source stating the following regarding Del Rio's potential WWE status: 'Even if they keep Del Rio in the company, that belt is almost surely coming off of him.' Advertisement While Vikingo is scheduled to be a big part of the partnership going forward, Del Rio's status for Worlds Collide remains uncertain. Stay tuned to WrestleZone for more information as it becomes available. Alberto Del Rio Attacks Production Crew On Mexican TV Show
Alberto Del Rio continues to find himself in the headlines ahead of his AAA Mega Championship defense this weekend against El Hijo del Vikingo. This week on Venga La Alegria, a talk show that airs in Mexico, an angle for this weekend's AAA match between Alberto Del Rio (El Patron) and El Hijo del Vikingo took place. In a fit of rage, Del Rio attacked Vikingo's father and multiple members of the show's production crew. Advertisement While some online had reported this as a shoot, this was 100% scripted and meant to build interest in his title defense against Vikingo this weekend. You can check out a video of the incident in the embedded post below: WWE has already spoiled the result of Del Rio's match this weekend While Alberto Del Rio's title defense hasn't happened yet, WWE has already spoiled the result. Monday night during RAW, WWE advertised that the match between El Hijo del Vikingo and Chad Gable at Worlds Collide will be for the AAA Mega Championship. This goes a long way in showing WWE's lack of interest in working with Del Rio following their acquisition of AAA. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now AAA stars to shine at Worlds Collide According to sources within WWE's creative team, multiple AAA wrestlers have been 'penciled in' for the event, marking a continuation of WWE's recent collaborative approach with other wrestling promotions. The line-up is packed with high-flying and dynamic luchadores including Aerostar, Chik Tormenta, El Hijo de Dr. Wagner Jr., El Hijo del Vikingo, Laredo Kid, Mr. Iguana, Octagon Jr., Pagano, and Psycho Clown. Fans familiar with AAA will recognize these names as some of the promotion's biggest draws, known for their thrilling in-ring style and vibrant personas. Alongside these Mexican stars, WWE will also showcase talent from TNA Wrestling, confirming appearances from Joe Hendry, The Nemeth Brothers (Ryan and Nic Nemeth), and Moose. This diverse blend of wrestling styles is expected to offer a fresh and energetic experience for fans, highlighting the growing trend of cross-promotional partnerships within the wrestling world. Alberto Del Rio 's absence sparks speculation One name notably missing from the AAA roster for this event is Alberto Del Rio, a former WWE star and major figure in Mexican wrestling. While Del Rio remains under contract with AAA, he is not slated to appear at Worlds Collide. Recent reports suggest WWE's hesitation to involve him due to past controversies and the sensitive nature of his previous departure from WWE. Del Rio is still active in AAA and scheduled to compete in a high-profile match against El Hijo del Vikingo shortly before the WWE event. With Worlds Collide set to take place in early June, fans can look forward to a unique wrestling event where lucha libre's fast-paced action and TNA's powerhouse style collide under the WWE banner. The event promises thrilling matches and new rivalries, as WWE continues to broaden its global footprint. Stay tuned for official announcements and match cards as the countdown to June 7 begins.

WWE fans criticise 'return' of former world champion after the wrestling company's partnership with rival promotion
WWE fans have criticised the reported return of a former champion in the company. The promotion recently acquired with AAA, a lucha libre promotion, with the announcement made in Las Vegas during WrestleMania 41, with boss Triple H joined by the likes of Rey Mysterio to share the news. There will also be a joint show involving the promotions, to be held on Saturday June 7 featuring both WWE and AAA wrestlers. One of those AAA wrestlers could be Alberto Del Rio, who is a former WWE champion, as well as a Royal Rumble winner and world heavyweight champion. He was with WWE from 2008 to 2014, and returned briefly between 2015 and 2016. Since, he has wrestled for the likes of Impact and AAA, but his life away from wrestling has also drawn attention. In 2016, he went public in a relationship with fellow former WWE wrestler Paige, and, after their split in 2017, he made threats to expose her for previous arrests and alleged domestic violence against her. In May 2020, meanwhile, Del Rio, real name Jose Alberto Rodriguez Chucuan, was arrested after allegedly battering and sexually assaulting his girlfriend, booked into and charged with one count of sexual assault and one count of assault causing bodily harm. He was released after posting a bail of $50,000, but later indicted by a grand jury and formally charged with aggravated kidnapping and sexual assault. The trail was delayed a number of times before the charges were dropped in December 2021. According to Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer, Del Rio has signed with WWE on a new contract, part of a selected number of AAA wrestlers who have done so, while other reports suggest WWE have simply assumed the contract he has at AA. The news received backlash online, with one fan writing: 'WWE released all that talent on Friday just to turn around and sign Alberto Del Rio. Sad times.' Another wrote: 'If people don't boo Alberto Del Rio out of the building, I swear to God.' A third posted: 'Alberto Del Rio in what year?' Upon acquiring AAA, meanwhile, Triple H said: 'AAA has a rich cultural heritage with some of the most passionate fans in the world and it's an honor to work with the Pena family to embark on this journey.

Clarification: Alberto Del Rio WWE return highly unlikely, no official deal in place
During WrestleMania 41 weekend in April 2025, made a major announcement: it had acquired the iconic Mexican wrestling promotion Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide. Michael Cole shared the news live during the WrestleMania 41 pre-show, and the company also revealed plans for a new Worlds Collide event featuring talent from both NXT and AAA. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Soon after, reports from SUPER LUCHAS editor-in-chief Ernesto Ocampo listed eight AAA stars WWE had either signed or retained as part of the acquisition. These included Hijo de Dr. Wagner, Hijo del Vikingo, La Parka, La Hiedra, Lady Flammer, Lady Maravilla, Niño Hamburguesa, and notably, Alberto Del Rio. Del Rio, a former WWE Champion, was seen by many as an unlikely name given his past with the company and extensive controversies. Clarification: WWE Has Not Re-Signed Del Rio Despite early buzz, Del Rio has not signed a new WWE contract. The confusion stems from WWE's acquisition of AAA, which means the company is inheriting Del Rio's existing contract with AAA, not offering him a direct WWE return. The reputable @luchablog Twitter/X account clarified that 'WWE didn't give Alberto Del Rio a contract,' and that he remains under his AAA deal signed in 2024. Ocampo later added that these AAA stars will remain primarily in Mexico-based events, with only select performers like Vikingo potentially appearing in U.S. crossover shows. In response to earlier public claims by Del Rio that he was planning a WWE comeback, a WWE higher-up directly refuted flatly denied any such interest in 2023. Speaking to Fightful's Sean Ross Sapp, the source said there was 'no f*****g chance' of a return, and added that there had 'never been any real consideration' of bringing him back since his 2016 departure. Fan Backlash Erupts Over Alberto Del Rio's Return Alberto Del Rio's apparent WWE return, via AAA acquisition, has sparked widespread backlash among wrestling fans. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Critics flooded social media, slamming WWE for re-signing a figure with a history of controversies while releasing other respected talent. Here are some of the most viral reactions: 'Lfmao this company doesn't give a sh*t about anything. They really signed Del Rio after everything he's done.' 'Del Rio has always sucked.' 'Fires Dakota Kai but signs Alberto Del Rio.' 'WWE: 'We're a global brand of empowerment.' Also WWE: re-signs Alberto Del Rio – known abuser, charisma vacuum, sh*t wrestler, general liability.' 'Hiring that POS Alberto Del Rio when you just released a bunch of good quality human beings is baffling.' Fans also mocked WWE's decision-making, calling it hypocritical and tone-deaf. The sentiment is clear: Del Rio's return has become one of the most polarizing moves WWE has made in years. A Career of Highs and Harsh Controversies Alberto Del Rio, born José Alberto Rodríguez, first joined WWE in 2009 and quickly rose to prominence. He won the 2011 Royal Rumble, Money in the Bank, and held the WWE Championship and World Heavyweight Championship a total of four times. He also captured the United States Championship twice. However, his WWE tenure has been deeply marred by controversy and misconduct. He was first released by WWE in August 2014 for 'unprofessional conduct.' He returned for a short stint in 2015, but was again suspended for violating the company's Wellness Policy and opted out of his contract in September 2016. After WWE, Del Rio wrestled in TNA/IMPACT under the name Alberto El Patrón. He won the promotion's world title in 2017, but was suspended and stripped of the belt following a domestic violence incident. He was eventually released for failing to appear at a co-branded event between Lucha Underground and IMPACT Wrestling. Del Rio's most publicized and turbulent relationship was with former WWE Divas Champion and current AEW star Saraya (formerly known as Paige). The pair dated from 2016 to 2017, during which time they were involved in multiple domestic incidents and arrests. The relationship ended after about a year. Legal Troubles: Indictments and Dismissal In May 2020, Del Rio was arrested and indicted in Bexar County, Texas, after a former partner accused him of aggravated kidnapping and four counts of sexual assault. The woman alleged that Del Rio physically assaulted her, tied her hands with boxing straps, stuffed a sock in her mouth, and sexually assaulted her for hours. He was indicted by a grand jury later that year, and the charges carried the possibility of years of imprisonment. However, after multiple trial delays, the case was dismissed in December 2021 when the alleged victim failed to appear in court. As a result, no conviction was made, and Del Rio was legally cleared of the charges, although the allegations have continued to shadow his reputation. In 2023, Del Rio returned to AAA and later won the AAA Mega Championship at Triplemanía XXXII in August 2024. Latest Incident and Suspension Del Rio's troubles did not end there. In March 2025, he was caught on video attacking a fan during an AAA live event. The footage went viral, leading to a six-month suspension handed down by a local athletic commission. This incident further fueled criticism and questions about WWE's association with him, even if indirect. While his name reappears in WWE discussions due to the AAA acquisition, the company has shown no intention of integrating him into WWE programming. His inclusion on Alumni page may reflect the AAA merger, but does not indicate an official WWE return.
