Al Hilal survive Al Fateh scare to stay second in Pro League

Saudi Gazette report AL AHSA — Al Hilal staged a dramatic comeback to defeat Al Fateh 4-3 in a pulsating clash on Friday night, strengthening their grip on second place in the Saudi Pro League and edging closer to qualification for next season's AFC Champions League Elite. In one of the most thrilling matches of the season, Al Hilal came from behind three times at Prince Abdullah bin Jalawi Stadium before Serbian striker Aleksandar Mitrovic sealed victory in second-half stoppage time with his second goal of the night. The win took Al Hilal to 71 points, firmly in second place behind newly crowned champions Al Ittihad. Meanwhile, Al Fateh remain on 33 points and winless in their last eight league outings. The hosts took a shock 2-0 lead through a quick-fire brace from Algerian midfielder Sofiane Bendebka in the 15th and 24th minutes. Al Hilal thought they had a penalty to pull one back, but the decision was overturned following VAR review. Coach Mohammed Al Shalhoub made bold first-half changes, introducing Nasser Al Dawsari and young Brazilian Kaio. The move paid off as Al Dawsari smashed in Al Hilal's first goal early in the second half. Captain Salem Al Dawsari then levelled in the 60th minute with a composed finish from a Malcom assist, only for Murad Batna to strike again for Fateh in the 82nd minute with a rocket from distance. But Al Hilal weren't done. Mitrovic equalized with a bullet header and then completed the turnaround with a clinical finish in added time. Al Fateh thought they had salvaged a point when Matías Vargas scored deep into stoppage time, but VAR ruled it out for offside. With the league race nearly over, Al Hilal now look to cement second place and their spot in the AFC Elite competition, with two matches left to play.

Al-Hilal keep slim Saudi Pro League title hopes alive with comfortable win

Al-Hilal defeated Al-Orobah 4-0 on Monday to keep their slim Saudi Pro League title hopes alive. The reigning champions are six points behind leaders Al-Ittihad with just three games remaining. After the Jeddah giants enjoyed a comfortable win on Sunday, defeating Al-Fayha 3-0 at home, the pressure was on their Riyadh rivals, also playing at home. Interim coach Mohammed Al-Shalhoub, who took over this month after the departure of Jorge Jesus, knew that only a win would do against the relegation battlers. As expected, the Blues attacked from the start but the visitors defended deeply and in numbers. Hamad Al-Yami almost put the home side ahead at the midway point of the first half. After making a run on the right side, he was picked out by a fine floated pass from Ruben Neves but the full-back, stretching at close range, could not get enough power on his shot. The home fans, who failed to turn up in large numbers, did not have to wait for much longer before the deadlock was broken, however. Salem Al-Dawsari has been in fine goal-scoring form of late, but just before the half-hour mark he turned provider with a perfect cross from the left side of the penalty area for Aleksandar Mitrovic, unmarked at the edge of the six-yard box, to steer home. Just before half-time, the goalscorer went down in the box under a challenge but the referee waved play on. The attacks continued after the restart and the task Al-Orubah faced became more difficult within two minutes when Ibrahim Al-Zubaidi was shown a straight red for a reckless challenge on Malcom. On the hour, Mohammed Kanno's fierce effort from outside the area stung the palms of Gaetan Coucke and, despite the lead and the extra-man advantage, there was always a chance that the visitors might grab a goal that could all but hand the trophy to Al-Ittihad. However, Al-Hilal effectively sealed the win in the 65th minute, thanks to that man Al-Dawsari, who scored a typically classy goal. Cutting in from the left, he exchanged swift passes with Sergej Milinkovic-Savic as he moved into the area and then lifted a perfect chip over the advancing goalkeeper. Two late goals added to the ultimately emphatic nature of the victory: Kaio Cesar scored from the spot in the 90th minute and then grabbed another two minutes later. The title still seems likely to be heading to Jeddah but Al-Hilal are at least showing they will not be just handing it over without a fight.

Mitrovic misses training over abnormal heart rhythm

Fulham signed Aleksandar Mitrovic from Newcastle in July 2018 [Getty Images] Former Newcastle United and Fulham forward Aleksandar Mitrovic missed training with Al-Hilal because of an abnormal heart rhythm. Local media have reported that the 30-year-old was taken to hospital after scoring for the Saudi Pro League champions in a 2-0 win at Al-Fayha on 7 March. Mitrovic had just returned from a hamstring injury that had kept him out of action since January. "The medical staff has decided to rest Aleksandar Mitrovic from Sunday's training, due to feeling fatigue and arrhythmias," Al-Hilal said in a statement. Advertisement "He will be observed by specialists, as his case will be monitored constantly." The Serbia striker joined Al-Hilal from Fulham in August 2023 for what the Premier League side said was a "club record transfer fee". Mitrovic made 205 appearances for Fulham and scored 111 goals after signing from Newcastle in 2018. He broke the Championship scoring record with 43 goals in 44 games during their promotion-winning season of 2021-22. In total he scored 38 goals in 129 Premier League appearances for Fulham and Newcastle. Al-Hilal face Pakhtakorin from Uzbekistan in the second leg of their AFC Champions League Elite last-16 tie on Tuesday. Advertisement The Saudi club did not say if Mitrovic, who has scored 13 goals in 14 games in the Saudi Pro League this season, would be involved.
