Greater Minnesota's first Dave's Hot Chicken will open this month as the California-born, fast-casual chicken chain expands across the state. The restaurant at 1630 Broadway Avenue South in Rochester will celebrate its grand opening Friday, June 20. A family-run franchisee operation from former NBA star Kris Humphries, his parents William and Debra Humphries, and cousin Alex Humphries brought Dave's Hot Chicken to Minnesota in 2023. A total of 18 locations, with one each in Rochester and St. Cloud, are planned for the state, franchisee Alex Humphries said last year. Currently, Dave's Hot Chicken in open in St. Paul's Highland Park area, Apple Valley, Coon Rapids and Minnetonka. An upcoming location in Minneapolis' North Loop is expected to open in September. Dave's Hot Chicken to bring the heat to Rochester soon
Feb. 17—ROCHESTER — While the temps are frigid, work on a spicy new restaurant — Dave's Hot Chicken — is starting to heat up in south Rochester. Minnesota's Humphries family, which originally brought Five Guys Burgers and Fries to the Med City in 2010, plans to introduce Rochester to the Dave's Hot Chicken brand in the near future. Construction of the new restaurant is expected to start soon in Suite 107 of 1620 Broadway Ave. S. That puts Dave's Hot Chicken on the end of the commercial center in front of the Candlewood Suites hotel . Other tenants in the center are Shopko Optical and Caribou Coffee . "An opening late in the second quarter. That's our target," said Alex Humphries. "We're very excited about this location, because we'll have a large dining area as well as a drive-thru window situated on that busy Broadway corridor. We think this will be a busy location for us." To launch the new 2,830-square-foot restaurant, he anticipates hiring 75 to 100 people in Rochester. The Humphries family includes retired NBA player Kris Humphries, his parents, William and Debra Humphries, and his cousin Alex Humphries. In addition to playing for nine teams in the NBA during a 14-year career, Kris Humphries is also known for being very briefly married to Kim Kardashian in 2011 before divorcing. The family started its foray into restaurant franchising with Five Guys and later with Crisp & Green . The Humphries have since divested of those two brands and now are focusing on Dave's Hot Chicken. They have four Dave's locations in the Twin Cities. "It was a natural segue for us to look to Rochester as our first location outside of the Twin Cities. Our Five Guys location there was the highest performing restaurant in our portfolio," said Alex Humphries. "Knowing about the demand for fast casual food there and the strong economy there with Mayo Clinic, it was a natural fit to open in Rochester." Competing with Raising Cane's, Popeyes , KFC and Chick-fil-A , the Humphries family believe Los Angeles-based Dave's is a solid brand with a quality menu. They are a big disruptor in the chicken space. One thing we really liked about Dave's is how they catered their messaging to reach new consumer groups on TikTok and Instagram. It's a cultural phenomenon," he said. "The spices create an insanely good flavor to the chicken. Customers have a choice of seven spice levels starting with no spice and going up to level seven where you have to sign a waiver. There's something for everybody."
