Reproductive specialist on Trump executive order to protect IVF
CONNECTICUT (WTNH) — News that is encouraging for people finding it difficult to start a family: President Trump's latest executive order is looking to make fertility treatments more affordable and accessible for Americans.
Right now, invitro fertilization, also known as IVF, treatments range in price from $12,000 to $15,000 per cycle. It's estimated that 1 in 8 couples in the U.S. struggle with infertility, which is about 6.7 million people.
Trump has signed an executive order on IVF. Here's what you should know about the procedure
The executive order instructs that the assistant to the president for domestic policy to give Trump a list of recommendations on protecting IVF. A Connecticut reproductive specialist said that while the news is encouraging, there are some concerns.
'There are certain treatments where IVF is required for people to build their families,' Dr. Alex Kucherov, reproductive endocrinologist at Illume Fertility, said. 'For example, if someone has tubule factor infertility, perhaps scar tissue in their abdomen from prior appendicitis, they need IVF to build their families. For many people, unfortunately, this is not an option. For instance, folks on public insurance, such as Medicaid. It's typically not covered.'
IVF is also not covered by federal insurance. It has yet to be determined how this executive order would roll out.
